Electro Harmonix Tube Zipper Pedal - Product Review

Electro Harmonix has been producing incredible effects units practically since the dawn of rock music. By relentlessly upping the bar for originality and quality, they continue to bring their company to the highest realms of respect in zipper pedals, tones, and manipulation.

Perhaps the most amazing thing that EH has been doing as of late is creating these outstanding pedals that actually power themselves by tubes. The Electro Harmonix Tube Zipper is an Envelope Filter and a Distortion. This pedal will give you an undeniable shove into a world of warm tube crunch that you could only find in an 80s Marshall, or something comparable.

I was floored when turning this pedal on for the first time. You could plug this in to a cheap PA head for guitar and make it sound the quality of an ENGL or Soldano head. I knew this thing would be good, but I was unprepared for the extent of its capability. With two 12AX7 EH tubes inside, it really is no wonder that the tonal quality is so impressive. By drawing all of its output power from actual tubes, you would have to expect that its going to resonate with the clarity and purpose of real tube powered heads.

This pedal has a lot of features. In addition to its naturally blissful tone, it is an envelope filter and a distortion. The top three knobs control the envelope filter. These knobs are for changing Resonance, Frequency, Sensitivity. As you can see, you will have all you need to make the proper adjustments for the perfect, funky envelope filtering sound. You will be able to add a lot dynamic to your sound by letting this effect bring a wide range of harmonic plushness to your tone.

Below these, you will find three knobs dedicated for allowing the distortion to shine through with maximum preference and accuracy. You will find knobs for Master Volume, Drive, and Input Gain. Funny, because so many amps have the same exact knobs. When plugged in and adjusting these three, it sounds like you are adjusting the knobs on a classic tube amp. There are also two switches that allow for further enhancement.

The first is Envelope, which can be set to Up or Down. This will allow which part of the frequency will pick up the most accent. The high point in the wave or the low point. The other switch is Mode and switches from Trill or Tron. Each of these provide their own unique perspective on the push of the pedal.

I like this pedal mostly for the tube drive it has. If you do not feel like spending the cash on a $1K+ tube amplifier, find one that is less qualified and put this in front of it. You will not miss a beat. MusiciansFriend.com lists these sharks for only $200.

A zipper (British English: zip or (rarely) zip fastener) is a popular device for temporarily joining two edges of fabric. It is used in clothing (e.g., jackets and jeans), luggage and other bags, sporting goods, camping gear (e.g., tents and sleeping bags), and other daily use items.

The bulk of a zipper consists of two strips of fabric tape, each affixed to one of the two pieces to be joined, carrying from tens to hundreds of specially shaped metal or plastic teeth. These teeth can be either individual or shaped from a continuous coil, and are also referred to as elements.[2] The slider, operated by hand, moves along the rows of teeth. Inside the slider is a Y-shaped channel that meshes together or separates the opposing rows of teeth, depending on the direction of the slider's movement.

Some zippers have two slides, allowing variation in the opening's size and position. In most jackets and similar garments, the opening is closed entirely when one slide is at each end. In most baggage, the opening is closed entirely when the two slides are next to each other at any point along the zipper.

A zipper costs relatively little, but if it fails, the garment may be unusable until the zipper is repaired or replaced—which can be quite difficult and expensive. Problems often lie with the zipper slider; when it becomes worn it does not properly align and join the alternating teeth. If a zipper fails, it can either jam (i.e. get stuck) or partially break off.

Quick Warm Up for Beginner and Intermediate Trumpet

This is a great warm up for beginners and intermediate trumpet players. Warm ups for professionals are easily obtained on the internet. This warm up is useful for players who have less time or who are not playing every day. It covers some of the basic skills in a short time. If you are just taking out your trumpet for a quick session, these exercises will get you playing at your optimum in a hurry.
The following steps can be extended as time permits. Note: optimum warm ups should be between thirty and forty minutes.

A good pre warm up is to listen to some professional players warming up before you start. Try to emulate the warmth and tone, not just on the trumpet but on the mouthpiece and even in the lip buzzing.
Breathing – this is probably the single most important exercise and forms the basis of all wind instrument skills.

1. Start by expelling all air out from lungs then take a full breath, hold air in lungs without the use of throat or lips using just your diaphragm. Do this for 20 seconds and extend the time with practice.
2. Remove mouthpiece and first slide. Now take full breaths and expel air directly into trumpet tube as quickly as possible. Repeat 3 times.
3. I have combined three skills into this exercise. Singing, buzzing on mouth piece and buzzing on lips. Start with nine crochets at 80 beats per minute. From C-G and then down to C again. Sing, then buzz then play mouth piece. Then take it up a tone and so on. As high as is comfortable. Don't neglect to sing with a good tone as this is good warm up for the ear. Do this for 3-4 minutes.
4. Have a short rest, then blow the lips like a horse, then say Ahhh and Ohhh with lips stretched and mouth as wide as possible for Ahhh and rounded for Ohhh
5. Buzz mouthpiece from low C as high as possible and back down again. Do this within 5 seconds and as smoothly as possible applying NO lip pressure. Repeat  for about 1 minute.
6. Soft long tones at 60 beats per min.  Play 4 beats on low C then slur down to B for 4 beats and then back to C for 4 beats. Play as softly as possible. Now take it down a tone and repeat, and then up a tone and repeat.  Continue in this pattern as low and high as possible for about 5 minutes.
7. Expanding scales at 80 bts per min.  Play crochets from lowest G to Mid C and back down again in G Major. Rest and go up to D, etc. Apply no lip pressure and continue until you find your range. Repeat for 3 minutes.

By this point you should be breathing well and playing with a full tone. Do not play beyond your range and apply no lip pressure. Don't forget to listen to some good trumpet players like Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis and try to emulate their tone. Play along and memorise phrases and songs. Check out a reutable music download site like the kazaa or put on a good album.

Iron and Wine our Endless Numbered Days Rock Music CD Review

The super talented group Iron and Wine have released their most recent CD on the Sub Pop Records recording label, entitled Our Endless Numbered Days.

It's a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I'm more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with each song standing tall on it's own.

Our Endless Numbered Days has a nicely varied, mix of 12 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly outstanding musicians. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. They’re all here.

If you’re a Iron and Wine fan this is a CD your collection flat cannot be without. In fact, this is one of those CDs that you don’t even have to be a fan of lname, or even Rock to know is good. It’s just good music. Period.

While the entire CD is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 2 - Naked As We Came, track 9 - Free Until They Cut Me Down, and track 12 - Passing Afternoon.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - On Your Wings. It’s a great track!

Our Endless Numbered Days Release Notes:

Iron and Wine originally released Our Endless Numbered Days on March 23, 2004 on the Sub Pop Records label.

CD Track List Follows:

1. On Your Wings 2. Naked As We Came 3. Cinder And Smoke 4. Sunset Soon Forgotten 5. Teeth In The Grass 6. Love And Some Verses 7. Radio War 8. Each Coming Night 9. Free Until They Cut Me Down 10. Fever Dream 11. Sodom, South Georgia 12. Passing Afternoon

Iron & Wine: Sam Beam, Sara Beam, Patrick McKinney, Jeff McGriff, EJ Holowicki, Jonathan Bradley. Recorded at Engine Deck Studios, Chicago, Illinois in 2003.

Product leaks online are often enough to generate interest on a mobile phone which the makers can gauge right away. There's the Robyn Android handset circulating the rumor mill before the 2010 Mobile World Congress and true enough, it got confirmed with the announced Sony Ericsson XPERIA Z10 Mini.

As the name clearly indicates, it's a mini version of the much awaited XPERIA X10 announced last November and has yet to be released. At a glance the Mini looks like a real junior with a diminutive body measuring all of 83 x 50 x 16 mm and weighing 88 g. This could make it the smallest Android smartphone in the market and should attract a wider market wanting a really convenient pocketable smartphone with all the features, never mind if they're not as lofty as the X10's superb features.

It certainly will appeal to a younger crowd as confirmed by its availability in six different colors of red, pink, lime, silver, pearl white and the more common black. It should be available in the 2nd quarter starting April when the XPERIA X10 finally gets released under Vodafone UK.

Mini Features

As a junior version of the X10, its understandable that its feature set won't hold up to daddy when compared with it, but taken on its own, the Mini is a competitively stylish and competent Android smartphone despite running the older Android 1.6 Cupcake with the Rachel/UX user interface on a less muscled Qualcomm MSM7227 processor clocked at 600 MHz.

The Mini is a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE phone on the 2G network for world wide roaming and a 3G phone on the dual band UMTS with HSDAP/HSUPA for high speed internet surfing. It also has WiFi 802.11b/g for hotspot surfing and the usual complement of Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for local data connectivity. It also has SatNav functionality from an A-GPS receiver with Google Maps.

Their main obvious mini feature is a reduced screen size at a sub-par 2.5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display. It has QVGA resolution and 16 million colors, a gravity accelerometer for auto rotate viewing and an anti-scratch glass surface.

Its imaging comes with an above-average 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED Flash, face/smile detection, geo tagging from its A-GPS receiver and VGA video recording at 30fps with video light. Entertainment gets the usual media players for popular audio and video files formats with TrackID music recognition, an FM stereo receiver with RDS. A2DP and 3.5mm headphone jack.

On the apps front, you get Google Search, Google Talk, Google Voice Search push email, IM and a web browser with Flash Support for YouTube. You also get a document viewer for PDF and common MS Office files as well as Timescape and Mediascape.

Phone memory is a paltry 128 MB but you get microSD expandability of up to 16 GB. The retail kit will include a 2 GB microSD card. There's also a standard lithium polymer battery the promises up to 4 hours of talk time in 2G and a standby time of up to 285 hours on single charge.

To find out more about the Xperia X10 Mini pay a visit to moby1. They compare contracts for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini and many other phones.

10 Top Tips To Become A Music Video Dancer

If you want to become a music video dancer there are many things you can do that will make people take you seriously and enhance your prospects. Follow these tips and you won't go wrong.

1. Start going to a dance studio. The bigger dance studios will often have the best dance teachers so you should try and go there, if not many times a local dance studio will have some very good teachers.

2. Attend a dance college. Doing a 3 year course at a professional dance college can give you a strong all round training as you'll be dancing all the time. Many jobs will also only accept applicants who have been to an accredited dance school.

3. Seek out the best dance teachers. Whatever styles of dance you choose to specialise in seek out and learn from the best teachers. They can teach you things that a non-expert wouldn't be able to.

4. When you get good start attending dance auditions and castings. This'll give you an idea of the process and the standard you'll have to get to.

5. Speak to other successful dancers who are doing well and ask them for advice. Many times they'll be happy to give you some pointers. Even if you don't ask them for advice, just by talking to them you'll get ideas about how you too can improve your prospects.

6. Get good photos done from a good photographer. Photos that reflect you and your image, and how clients could adapt your image to meet jobs specifications are an essential thing you'll have to send out again and again and can help you get good jobs.

7. Get a dance agent or join a dance agency. You'll have to audition to get in but they can get you many good castings and auditions that you wouldn't normally hear about. A good agent can turn around a dancer's career.

8. Practise. The more you practise the better you'll become. The better you are, the more choreographers that will want to work with you on their next music video project.

9. Go to the dance classes and masterclasses of prominent choreographers in the industry. This can make you a familiar face to them and you can learn the type of current choreography being used in music videos at the moment.

10. Remain optimistic. Whilst not every dancer can be a music video dancer, many people don't make it simply because they just give up. There are many rejections at auditions and whilst one choreographer may not feel you're right for their style of dance, another will think you're something special.

"Da-da-da, my baby left me, da-da-da, 'bout the break of day, da-da-da, she ain't comin' back, da-da-da, nothin' more to say..." This could certainly describe our economy these days, couldn't it? Or, a lost relationship? How about a lost job, home, income, wife, husband, health insurance, etc?

Every human being on the face of the Earth has a right to sing the blues. No matter what your station in life, we all go through times of deep despair. Let me say right now that we also go through times of great happiness, too. But, the human condition is wrought with enough blues-singing material to fill a billion pages.

I've been a blues songwriter, singer and performer for years. I didn't look for the blues. It found me. Turns out that after reading an Eric Clapton interview in the 80's, I realized that the rock-solid thread running through all the music I liked best was THE BLUES. Thanks, EC! In that interview, Clapton turned me on to Muddy Waters (real name: McKinley Morganfield), and The Undisputed King of the Delta Blues: Robert Johnson.

It is often said that "Blues had a baby and named it 'Rock and Roll'." The Beatles had a strong blues foundation as did The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors (the latter two actually played at my high school in 1968!), The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Canned Heat, Aretha Franklin, and hundreds of others. That's what my music is all about.

Nothing feels better than singin' the blues. It's a cathartic release of a deep soulful nature. It's a very spiritual feeling. I am never angry, frustrated or sick of playing the blues when I'm performing them. The fact that I've been able to write, record and perform my own compositions with my band, The Buzzard Brothers (of Flagstaff, AZ), is nothing short of miraculous. I could have never dreamed I'd be so fortunate. And, because of this amazing technological age we're all a part of, I now have my songs on YouTube and iLike, which is a blessing, and a growing addiction (if you look up my name and include YouTube or iLike in a search, you will find me). Please forgive the shameless self-promotion.

I even have the high honor and good fortune to be able to perform at my job working with psychiatric patients at our local regional hospital. A good number of these patients are players themselves. So, we'll sit and pass the guitar around at impromptu songwriter circles. They get much needed relief from playing our community guitar. It's one of the most therapeutic tools we have, outside the obvious medical and psychiatric treatment they receive. I also used my guitar continually as a teaching tool during my 30-year career as an elementary school teacher.

For me, no song is worth anything unless somebody hears it. I suppose it validates the song itself. It brings closure. Many closet writers probably don't need this type of gratification. But, I must confess, I do. The older I get, the more grateful I am to be able to play guitar and sing and lay it all on the line. It doesn't get any better. It certainly never gets old.

And, while the songs come as if by magic, I never turn one down. If it's there, I write it. I feel as though I'm compelled and honor-bound to do it. And now, I can throw it right up on YouTube easy as pie. The best investment I've ever made, save buying my gem of a guitar (it's a Martin 00028EC Eric Clapton signature model acoustic), is my Canon Powershot SX10IS still-shot and video camera. What a blast. The kicker is:

if I can do it, so can YOU!

The moral of the story is: we all have the blues residing inside us somewhere. If it's yearning to be released, let it go and let it happen. You'll never feel so good about feelin' so bad.
