African Marriages - Part 2

Almost all African marriages include dowry or bride's price or "lobolo" or "bohadi". A young man would not feel good if he is not required to give "lobolo" or "bohadi", The amount of money or property or number of cows varies from one family to another and from one tribe to another. A young man pays "lobolo" according to the standards and status of that family or tribe. When the two negotiating teams have finished their job, which might involve two to three visits depending on whether they do not reach a deadlock, a date for sealing a covenant or relationship between two families would be arranged. Normally the prospective bride's family arranges that ceremony, which is also coupled with the ritual of receiving and accepting the prospective bridegroom into the family as their son. A sheep is slaughtered and its blood is used as a material to seal to a covenant and confirm a relationship between two families.

Traditionally a man does not pay the bride's price or dowry or "bohadi" or "lobolo" in full because that would be interpreted to mean that his family is breaking ties with his prospective wife's family. In fact, the young man must be seen to be struggling to pay the rest of the amount, and a concession would be made for him to pay less than the amount originally required. He would pay 80 to 90% of the "bohadi" or "lobolo", and the rest would remain as a balance or debt. The young man is not expected to pay this amount of money or cows. He is eternally indebted to his family-in-law at two levels, (1) for receiving a precious gift of a wife, and (2) for the balance of "lobolo" or "bohadi" that he does not have to pay.

It should be noted that "lobolo" or "bohadi" is not a price to purchase a woman, but a gift to the other woman's family, and a test to a young man to check if he is capable of providing for his family. Women are precious in African culture, and they are not for sale. In fact, women are encouraged to leave if they are continuously mistreated, especially if both families have tried but have not been able to resolve that conflict. The same applies to a young man. If a young woman misbehaves, and both families are not able to solve that problem, a young man is encouraged either to divorce or (in some cases) to consider polygamy.

African Marriage ceremonies vary from one family to another and from one tribe to another. Marriage is a community event. Among many traditional Africans, there are no invitation cards. For example, in Sesotho culture, a white flag or cloth is flown higher at the bride's home as a sign to communicate two messages, namely, (1) that there is a wedding in this house, and (2) the entire community is invited.

African marriage ceremonies are often conducted on one day, or two days or even several days - depending on the traditions of the family or tribe. Ceremonies vary from one family to another. There is a lot of preparation in terms of songs to be sung, speeches to be made, counselling of the bride and bridegroom by representatives from families, community, elders, church, king or chief of the territory, friends and neighbours. There is a lot of exchanging of gifts between the two families, gifts from the community members to the newly wedded couple. Marriage brings two families into one.

I think Africa has something to offer to the world in terms of its family and marriage structures, especially in the light of the fact that marriages are under attack and are crumbling. Extended families are critical in ensuring the stability and support of marriages. Uncles and aunts, grannies, and relatives should play a critical role in forming a support for the newly wedded couple. This will ensure a healthy family, healthy tribe or society, and a healthy nation. The wellness and health of the family are critical in providing a healthy nation, and producing peaceful societies.

Like in many cultural groups, African marriages are not perfect and still need to learn from other cultural groups, but Africa has its unique contribution to the world in terms of supportive family and marriage structures, and the concept and practice of "ubuntu".

Singing And Acting Career Of Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra, also affectionately also known as Old Blue Eyes was probably the most outstanding popular music singer of the 20th century. Sinatra's only real rivals during those days were perhaps a handful of other singing superstars such as Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Presley, and the fab four or The Beatles.

In a professional singing and acting career spanning more than six decades, Sinatra demonstrated a remarkable ability to maintain his popular appeal to his fans across almost two generations. This is a ringing endorsement of the status of this singing and acting superstar.

Frank Sinatra's singing career started during the big band swing era of the 1930s and 1940s. His first number one hit on the charts was in 1940 and was still making million-selling recording rights up to 1994.

This superb entertainer was able to take the work of great composers of the 1920s and 1930s, such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern , Cole Porter and Richard Rodger and turn their compositions into masterful singing pieces and enshrined them into eternal classics.

Sinatra was the son of a humble fireman and dropped out of high school to pursue a career in singing much to his father's disappointment. In September 1935, the young Sinatra appeared as part of the singing group, the Hoboken Four on Major Bowes' Original Amateur Hour show. The quartet won the radio show contest and toured the country with Bowes.

Sinatra then took up a job as a singing waiter and MC at the Rustic Cabin in Englewood, New Jersey. He was singing there in early 1939, when he was talent spotted by trumpeter Harry James, who had organized his own big band after leaving Benny Goodman, which was another famous big band leader of that era. Harry James hired Sinatra as a singer in his band and Frank made his first recording on July 13, 1939.

At the end of 1939, Sinatra accepted an offer from the more popular big band leader Tommy Dorsey. Over the next two and a half years, he was featured on 16 Top Ten hits recorded by Dorsey and his band, amongst them the legendary chart-buster "I'll Never Smile Again," and was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

During this while, young Sinatra also performed on various radio shows with Tommy Dorsey and his band. He also appeared with the band in movies such as Las Vegas Nights in 1941 and Ship Ahoy in 1942.

Frank Sinatra started out his solo singing career in early 1942 showcasing his singing talent by recording a four-song session arranged and conducted by Axel Stordahl. One of the songs was Cole Porter's "Night and Day," and that song went on to become his first hit chart entry under his very own name.

His big break came from his engagement as a singing support act to Benny Goodman at the Paramount Theatre in New York, which began on New Year's Eve. This engagement catapulted his singing career and made him the first real teen singing idol, with throngs of girls screaming and swooning in the aisles.

From then on, Sinatra's singing career never looked back. His singing talent scored him another successful chart topper with "There Are Such Things," occupying number one position in January 1943. Then in August that same year, the singing superstar did another chart buster with "In the Blue of the Evening". From then on, Sinatra successfully scored hits after hits with songs such as "It's Always You,", "I'll Be Seeing You," and "All or Nothing at All".

Frank Sinatra did many radio shows around that time and in April 1943, he made his first credited appearance in a movie, singing "Night and Day" in Reveille With Beverly which launch his acting career.

This was followed by Higher and Higher in which he played a minor role acting as himself and followed up with another movie, Step Lively which was released in mid 1944 in which he played a larger role. In November 1944, he returned to cutting records, beginning with a cover version of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" which was again another chart topper. Sinatra then hired Styne and Cahn to write the songs for his first MGM musical, Anchors Aweigh, and over the course of his successful singing career, he recorded more songs by Cahn than by any other songwriter.

Anchors Aweigh, in which Sinatra was paired with Gene Kelly, was released in July 1945 and went on to become the most successful film in 1945. He then went on to appear in many more movies such as MGM musicals On the Town and lower budget ones such as The Kissing Bandit.

At the same time, he continued to hit eight Top Ten hits in 1947 to 1949 which included "Mam'selle," which hit number one in May 1947, and "Some Enchanted Evening," from the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical South Pacific.

By 1950s, his singing career was on the decline, but he was still very active. At the fall of 1950 marks his first venture into television. His film work had nearly subsided athough in March 1952 he was featured in the drama Meet Danny Wilson which tested his acting skills on stage which gave him the opportunity to sing some of his greatest songs such as Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer's "That Old Black Magic," "I've Got a Crush on You" by George and Ira Gershwin, and "How Deep Is the Ocean" by Irving Berlin.

Then in 1955, the singing superstar hit number one again with the single "Learnin' the Blues" and the 12 inch album, "In the Wee Small Hours "which was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Sinatra acted in a television special in November 1965, A Man and His Music, and released a corresponding double vinyl album, which reached the Top Ten chart and also went gold. A Man and His Music won the 1966 Grammy for Album of the Year. Following this release, Old Blue Eyes catapulted back to number one on the singles charts for the first time in 11 years with "Strangers in the Night" in July 1966. This song also won him 2 Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Vocal Performance.

Towards the end of 1966, the singer released two more Top Ten albums, Sinatra At The Sands and That's Life. In April 1967, he was again number one on the singles charts with "Somethin' Stupid," a duet which he sung with his daughter Nancy Sinatra. Frank Sinatra's Greatest Hits was a compilation of his 1960s singles successes released in August 1968, was a million-seller.

Then in March 1969, perhaps the most recognized Sinatra song, "My Way," with lyrics specially written for him by Paul Anka was released. This amazing single reached the Top 40, and an album of the same name hit the Top Ten and went gold.

Frank Sinatra then announced his retirement in early 1971 at the age of 55. However, he burst into the limelight again in 1973 with a gold album and a TV special called Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back. In the twilight of his career, Sinatra cut down on producing albums, acting in movies and television in favor of live concert tours.

For six years, he did not release any albums until March 1980 with a three-LP set, Trilogy: Past, Present, Future. The most memorable track from the trilogy set was perhaps "Theme From New York, New York," the title song from the 1977 movie.

He returned to Capitol Records in 1993 and recorded Duets, on which he re-recorded his old songs, joined by other popular singers such as Tony Bennett, Elvis Costello, KD Lang and Bono of U2. It became his biggest-selling album selling over three million copies world wide. This was followed up in 1994 by Duets II, which won the 1995 Grammy Award for Traditional Pop Performance.

Frank Sinatra finally retired from acting and performing entertainment when he turns 80 in 1995. He died of a heart attack 2 years later when he was 82. Today, his songs are still heard in concert halls and clubs all over the world.

Protecting your Website Legally From the Music Industry

In the connected world, where businesses pop up like dandelions and anyone with a computer can upload video, audio and text-based content to be shared across the web, it is of growing importance to understand the potential legal ramifications associated with these technical advancements.

Most internet businesses make use of some sort of rich media on their websites such as video or music. What most don’t realize is that even the smallest S-Corp can find itself in hot water if it doesn’t understand the basics.

The intent of this article is to focus on the use of production music (music on your website) and the ways you can protect your business or yourself from copyright infringement.

What is production music?

Production music is music intended for use in connection with films, corporate videos, Television shows, commercials, Internet video, multimedia and any other form of media that requires music.

If you’ve ever listened to an advertisement on the radio, watched an infomercial, or heard menu music on a video game, then you have probably heard production music.

Production music libraries cover a multitude of genres, providing music for most tastes at varying levels of quality. Traditionally, production music comes in shorter lengths. These lengths are normally 30 seconds, 60 seconds and 90 seconds.

Production music also comes in different variations known as full and reduced versions. Reduced versions are identical to full versions with the exception of one or possibly two of the main instruments having been removed.

Who uses production music?

Production music is most widely used by industry experts like; video editors, producers, music supervisors, videographers, and creative directors. Although increasingly, it is being used by relative amateurs for websites, podcasts, streaming video and more.

How do I Get a License?

Something called a Synchronization License or Sync License must be obtained for the music in question before it can be utilized in any audiovisual production, such as a motion picture, television program, television commercial, video production, or website.

Sync Licenses come in different shapes and sizes. Two of the most popular are a Drop License and Blanket License. They are most commonly made available by production music publishers such as Slynth (www.slynth.com).

How do I get a Sync License?

Production music publishers will usually license music on what is called a needle drop (a.k.a Drop License) or a Blanket License.

A needle drop or Drop License is a license that requires payment for individual songs. The prices for each song vary depending on the type of production in which the song is being used. The rule of thumb when pricing Drop Licenses is - the larger the audience, the higher the price. (Rate cards can be requested with Drop Licenses.)

A Blanket license is a license that affords a user either a set number of music selections or unlimited use of music selections in any given production. The distinction between a blanket and drop license is a drop is issued for one song, a blanket for many. Obtaining a blanket license involves dozens of variables, so it usually requires some negotiation. Venues such as radio stations or night clubs will often require blanket licenses.

Is A Sync License the Same as a Performance License (Permission from the Musician)?

Unfortunately, no it isn’t. Obtaining a Sync License doesn’t absolve you from getting legal permission from the artist. And, seeing as musicians aren’t known for their knowledge of the legal system, you might imagine that obtaining such a license would be rather difficult. In actuality, the opposite is the case.

The reason for the relative ease of obtaining a Performance License is most musicians are represented by one of two agencies or “performance right societies” that handle the legal jargon. These societies manage the right of performers and see to it that artists get paid when you play their songs in a “public” venue.

Performance rights societies such as ASCAP, BMI and SESAC collect monies for composers and publishers. These societies handle Performance Licenses and should be consulted before you publish any finalized work.

Who needs a performance license?

Anyone who uses copyrighted music in a public place including radio and television stations and/or their networks; all new media, like the Internet and mobile technologies such as ringbacks and ringtones; satellite services like XM and Sirius; discos, nightclubs, bars, restaurants, hotels, and other venues. This includes digital jukeboxes and live concerts. All should obtain a performance license.

What happens if I don’t have a performance license?

Production music users are in danger of copyright infringement without a license from a performing rights organization. If you’re an individual with a small audience and no real money (ie you’re not a business), then you are at lower risk of having suit brought against you for copyright infringement.

However, if you’re an individual with a large audience or you’re a business or organization and you fail to obtain the proper licensing, be prepared to hire a lawyer.

The basic rule of thumb with rich media on your website is this: If you’re going to use audio without a license, make sure no one sees it. This may be a difficult rule for most webmasters to cope with, as the purpose of internet businesses is to be seen. Remember the best choice, if you have a large enough audience, is to be safe and purchase the required licenses.

7 Great Reasons to Dance

When it comes to dance there are plenty of wonderful reasons that people elect to dance. The fact remains that far too few of us manage to incorporate dance into our lives nearly as much as we should. There are many wonderful reasons to dance and they do not all require copious amounts of alcohol and someone with a video camera poised for America's Funniest Home Videos greatness.

Below I will suggest 7 great reasons to incorporate dance into your life as often as possible. I hope that you will take some of these to heart and find a few reasons of your own to dance more often.

Love

There are few greater reasons to dance than to show your love for your partner. You do not have to limit your dancing to your wedding night or an evening out with friends. All you need to dance with the one you love is some good music and a little bit of floor space. Dance while you prepare dinner, wash dishes, or just because it's raining outside. But dance with the one you love and do it often to keep those flames burning.

Joy

We always hear people talking about dancing for joy but how often do we really see that happen? What a shame it is that we actually take so few opportunities to dance in our society. Dancing is an outward expression of joy that is almost always infectious. Share your joy with the world and you just might find they will dance along with you. Even if they do not, you should at least be secure in the fact that at this moment in time you are much happier than they are.

Fun

When is the last time you've danced? Was it fun? I have found very few people (well other than young boys) who did not have any fun while dancing. The truth of the matter is that dancing is fun. Whether you are line dancing or trying the Tango it is great fun to dance.

Flirting

What a wonderful way to flirt dancing can be! If you haven't tried it with the one you love, there is no time like the present to do so. Find some great fun and flirty music and dance for the one you love. If you're really lucky, you might even convince them to join in.

To Make Your Children Laugh

Really, there is no better reason on the earth than this to dance. My kids love to see me dance the moves that were popular back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and share their more modern moves with me. It's a great way to enjoy your children before they decide your evil or during those rare moments when you may be on the verge of neutral in their opinions.

Fitness

While dancing does a lot to lighten the mood and raise your spirits it can also help your heart in other ways as well. Dancing is a great way to get up and moving that doesn't feel as though it is really exercise. This means that you can help your heart by dancing a little while every day. The longer you dance, the better you will feel and the healthier your heart will become.

Meet New People

If you decide to take lessons for dancing, you will find that you have the ability to meet a bunch of great new people. Dancing is a great way that many people are discovering to have fun and stay fit. This means that more and more people are joining local dance classes for these very reasons. You might develop some lifelong friendships through your dance lessons that you would have missed out on otherwise.

Of course there are many more reasons that different people take up dance. In fact, you may find an all-together different reason to take up dance for yourself. Whatever your reason you decide to dance, do it often and have fun in the process.

Go to http://dance.affilibiz.net/ for some great tips and advice.

I'm going to start with Beats.

First think about what type of beat you want to use. Are you going for the standard club boom-boom-boom-boom "4 to the floor" style? If you don't know what I mean, music is arranged in a series of beats. 2, 4, 8, and 16 are most common. Each block of beats is a measure. A '4 2 the floor' beat has one kick beat on every measure. Its the type of beat you get in most club, and raver type atmospheres, I've also heard it called the "gay bump" due to it's heavy usage in the gay club scene.

To set up a '4 to the floor' beat is simple, just find a single good kick drum hit, or a prepared loop of kick hits, and paste it into the track for the whole duration. Using alternating claps is also used often. Having some sort of processing on every other kick is also common.

A 'break beat' style uses a beat that is variable, which is to say it doesn't put the emphasis on a steady kick beat. Or any other element of the beat. Think Funk beats.

For example: Lets say you are using 4 beats per measure, and you want a 'break beat'. You could do it this way. Put a Kick on every 3erd beat for 3 measures, then on every other beat for 3. Then you can use other drum, synth and noises on the other beats along the 6 measures. Then you can copy and paste those 6 measures into the whole track, and you have a 'broken beat' style beat.

Acid Music Studio makes that easy with its simple pick and paint loop system. You can also cut apart a beat loop and use the cut, copy and paste functions to rebuild it the way you want it to sound. Most programs let you do the same thing.

If you use a steady kick beat, you will need additional elements to fill out the beat. The simplest way to do that, is to just drop another percussion track on top of the kick beat, then adjust the volume to match it up.

The hard (more individual and unique) way is to do the same as a break beat. You take other drum hits, synth 'stabs' and noises, then paint them in to work with the kick the way you want.

After you have a beat, consider using Breaks. A break is when you cut some, or all of the elements of a track to either give a short pause, use new elements briefly, or add new elements. In acid music studio just use the split at cursor function (right click) with a selected track, then you can pull one or both pieces apart to create a break.

I like to use breaks to introduce new elements in the song and layer the beat.

For example, I will start a track with a simple steady beat, then introduce another element on top of it (usually a synth loop). After a few moments I will 'break' the beat and let the other element play by itself. After a moment, I then restart the steady beat, but with the rest of the beat elements I wanted to use. Sometimes I keep the other (synth) element playing, sometimes I don't.

That creates a layering effect for the listeners. They hear the steady beat, then you "pop" out the full beat on them. It keeps the track moving, and sets things up so you can do it again later in the song, without the break being a complete surprise.

The name of the game is breaking up the repetitive nature of dance beats, while still keeping the people moving.

After you have the Beat where you want it, find a few more elements to "liven" up the song.

How many you use depends on the style of song you are working with, and your style. A glitch track could use dozens of noises and processed instruments, each only used briefly through the whole track. A minimalist dance track could just use a beat and the same synth line playing over and over, just at different volumes and pitches.

Its also good to remember to use Pan and Volume to separate each element of the song, and to create more movement within the song.

Go in close on a loop and bounce the Pan from side to side. Use the Volume envelope to fade a track in and out.

Experiment, and never throw anything away. You might think of something cool to do with it later.

This past year has been particularly wonderful for me as I was lucky to spend many days entertaining people that are most special to me...it was my way to express love and appreciation towards them.

I got into my body, my mind and spirit even more than usual. I allowed each encounter to be a full body experience. I mean this in more of a sensual manner rather than sexual.

I´m sure you´re wondering what the heck I´m trying to say!

Well let´s start with a question:

What does sensuality mean to you?

If we want to define the word sensuality, it is described in the dictionary as "the gratification of the senses or the indulgence of appetite".

Are we always willing and open to let go and allow such enjoyment?

We often spend the day thinking, evaluating even scrutinizing everything and everyone around us. There are times when this is necessary and there are times to shut it off and just letting yourself FEEL. However, the task of shutting it off is not so easy because guilt often accompanies such thoughts.

Let´s look at the meaning of guilt..."having committed a breach of conduct; violating law and involving a penalty". Oooh...sounds severe doesn't it?

As a woman, I've often struggled with the feeling of guilt...what is appropriate or inappropriate behavior? As a ballroom dancer, I've also struggled with what looks vulgar or what looks apprehensive when I dance. As a business woman, I've often felt guilty when I´m not working overtime on a project. To intensify matters, my strict Italian upbringing trained me to follow the rules...because guilt was always lurking.

I can accept that certain rules are meant for our safety and well-being...however, many of us tend to get too caught up in them, consequently inhibiting ourselves from discovering who we really are.

Well, all I can say is taking chances, making mistakes and appreciating life lessons unquestionably get me closer to being in touch with who I am and yearn to be. As a result, I have become less judgmental with myself by allowing compassion towards my behavior and make room to grow...sensually.

I have a new-found respect for sensuality. The only way I can indulge is being in the present moment...and those moments can last as long or as short as I need them to be. What I have uncovered for myself is a fresh outlook and renewed drive to pursue my purpose.

Can sensuality be the ultimate experience of giving to yourself, with no expectations except the sheer expression of what you feel at that particular moment? And in turn, have a renewed sense of being?

We need to learn how to put ourselves in an environment where we feel safe to let go and allow expression to flow through us. I realize that´s not easy to do. I have discovered taking charge and creating the conditions I need has guided me to cultivate more of what I long for.

I call it "making love to yourself".

The way you treat yourself is the way a man or other people will treat you. You have the power to either attract the type of relationships that will enhance your sensual spirit or weaken your feminine essence. Which one do you want?

Allow me to share how I let go and indulged in my sensuality.

I had a party in my home where I invited friends that were open and fun. The theme was "Think with the senses...Feel with the mind". All the guests had to wear silk pajamas. I wanted them to feel the sensation of a beautiful fabric against their skin. We sat on pillows and ate with our hands. I wanted everyone licking their fingers with delight at the taste of good food. The guests had to participate in painting a common canvas where each person had to build upon the idea of sensuality. I then proceeded to blind fold everyone help them listen and dance to the music in whatever manner they wanted without feeling self conscious. By the end of the evening...there was a magical feeling of freedom.

In short, we all have the potential to create what we want. The key is knowing what we truly want.

I have vowed to be "full of myself"...to "make love to myself"...to "embrace myself"...and to create precious moments where I can indulge, guilt free in my body, mind and spirit. I've come to realize that these moments of freedom give me strength to move forward.

Will you join me?
