Nokia Vs. Sony Ericsson - Who Will Take the Music Phone Crown?

In the UK, the two biggest names in the world of mobile phones are Nokia and Sony Ericsson. In terms of market share, between them they hold first and second place. But, how do they stack up against each other when it comes to music phones?
Nokia - Xpress yourself!

Both Nokia and Sony Ericsson have their fingers firmly in the music phone pie, with specific product lines designed to be great mobile phones AND great music players. Their purpose in life is to provide you with an awesome musical experience, and at the same time, give you awesome phones. In the Nokia camp, we have the Xpress Music range, the big boy amongst which is the Nokia 5610 Xpress. And what a nice mobile phone it is, too, with tons of cool stuff all packed into a sleek, sliding body. So, you get a 3 megapixel camera, fast internet access, and all the standard loveliness (and ease of use) you'd expect from a Nokia.

In terms of the music player, as well, this sexy little Nokia really has a good'n! Supporting a huge range of formats, from MP3 to AAC, from MP4 to WMA, it offers a wealth of playback options, and it's fair to say it is really going to excite your ears. Combine that with dedicated playback controls, and it makes the Nokia 5610 Xpress a mobile phone that really lays down the gauntlet for the Sony Ericsson challenger. The question is, though, can Sony Ericsson's music phones beat it?
Sony Ericsson - World of Walkman

To be fair, let's pit the Nokia against its closest rival, since it's hardly fair to pitch it against the W960i, which would kill and leave it in the dust. No, for this comparison, we need something in a similar price range, with similar features, to get a better comparison...

Well, that'll be the Sony Ericsson W910i, then! Sony Ericsson have a long-standing tradition of awesome music phones. Ever since they first released the W800i, the first Walkman mobile phone, their product range has included a plethora of music-centric devices, all of them with that big 'W' on the front. Certainly, Sony Ericsson wins on brand pedigree, since the Walkman name is one of those names that changed the world of music, starting with the original tape-based Walkman in the 80's. So, to see it on a mobile phone gives you a fairly clear idea that this is a serious piece of musical kit you're dealing with.

And, well, it is. Specs-wise, it's very similar to the Nokia, with 3MP camera, super-fast internet access, and a sleek, sliding body. But in terms of music, the Sony Ericsson W910i wins hands down, with its double-header of shake controls (just jiggle the phone to change tracks) and 'SensMe', a system that, once you tell it what your mood is, will work out exactly what songs will fit that mood, without you needing to do anything. That's one of the most clever features ever seen in mobile phones, and it's for that reason that the Sony Ericsson are the winners!

Michael Perlowin Presents Unique-sounding Classical Music Inspired by Spain

Michael Perlowin breaks new ground with innovative and enjoyable music performed primarily and surprisingly on the pedal steel guitar.

As with his forays into the world of Debussy, Stravinsky and Broadway with his Firebird Suite and West Side Story albums, Michael Perlowin is again shattering the stereotype of the pedal steel guitar as a country-and-western-only instrument. In his new album, Spanish Steel, he presents 20 tracks from or about Spain, featuring works by Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz, Joaquín Rodrigo, Julio Martinez Oyanguren, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

This new album sees Perlowin continuing to alternate between the use of the pedal steel as both a featured and ensemble instrument. However, this CD features Perlowin’s guitar work more than his previous outings, as the guitar is such an integral part of Spanish music. It is fair to say that this is not so much a "pedal steel guitar album" as it is an album of music in which the steel is predominantly featured for its unique expressive sound.

Perlowin, a veteran guitarist of the folk and rock music scene around L.A., became enamored of the pedal steel guitar after unexpectedly finding himself working on a country and western band during the mid-70s. His infatuation blossomed into an all-consuming love affair, an intensely passionate obsession that continues to this day. Perlowin jokingly calls himself a "steel-aholic," and adds that the intricacies and mysteries of the instrument cause most other players to feel the same way.

As a working guitarist, Perlowin had played just about every type of popular music, from standards, to folk, rock, country, blues, reggae and even disco. Playing pedal steel guitar, however, Perlowin found he was unhappy when confined to country and western music. He began playing the steel with musicians from various genres, including an all instrumental experimental music band, and a blues rock band ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkSnoeTWR4I ).

Eventually, it was the world of classical music that attracted Perlowin’s interest. A recording of Debussy’s "The Maid With the Flaxen Hair" by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith introduced him to the world of literate music. Perlowin explains, "As soon as I heard this piece, I realized that this was what I wanted to play." Perlowin’s own recording of the piece, which clearly shows Smith’s influence, can be heard on his first classical pedal steel album Firebird Suite.

"Everyone who plays classical music should be required to listen to this recording," said Mark Laycock, Music Director, Orchestra London, The Princeton Chamber Symphony and Guest Conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra and Indianapolis Symphony. "Mike Perlowin is a musical genius who I am proud to know and learn from, and honored to have for a friend. I love this instrument, and this music and the beauty of these sounds delights my soul."

Perlowin had been marginally exposed to classical music when he was young, and has no formal musical or production training. Perlowin’s second album, West Side Story, shows his growth not as a player, since he had already mastered the instrument, but as a producer, arranger, and recording engineer.

However, it is with this third album that his mastery of the recording studio blossomed to match his talents as a virtuoso musician. On Spanish Steel, Dave Beyer played drums and percussion, while Bill Watkins contributed timpani samples to complement Perlowin on pedal and lap steel guitars, electric and acoustic guitars, fretted and fretless basses, sitar, mandolin, mandocello, 5-string banjo, autoharp and additional percussion.

Spanish Steel is a totally unique and original album fulfilling Perlowin’s goal of showing the beauty and expressiveness of the pedal steel guitar. Replete with fascinating liner notes, it is the best example to date of the depths of Perlowin’s enormous talent. Find it along with his other albums at CDBaby.com, SteelGuitarMusic.com, Amazon.com; for reviews and images visit his artist website at http://www.mikeperlowin.com

Rock Band - Playing The Game

Rock Band is a music video game which allows the players (up to four) to simulate the playing of a rock band with the help of controllers modeled after musical instruments. The best part is that to hone the skills of rock band through a video game gives an exciting feel. Drum Lessons are over 40 included in this rock band and these allow playing at a tempo lesser than 60 and as well fast as 200. The game drums are compatible to the real life specific drums such as one game drum for each snare hits, hi-hat hits, toms and for crashes. This gives you a real feel of music and the coloring on the screen is also superb.

The rock band has guitars coming with ten frets, where the first five frets are standard, while the last five are reserved for solo performance. The drum and vocal parts are featured with peripheral hardware and a microphone is featured that helps in-built detector store letters to form common phrases such that the player can go on with the game in a free style with the set up of wild drum. Each rock band video game comes regularly with a guitar, a drum kit and a microphone. This video game comes pre-loaded and facilitates playing regardless of the age factor as it is not only a music phenomenon, but it also sounds like original compositions. This is an amazing game that has background music and a genuine feel of traveling the world and winning the approval from different countries and cities.

The drums Beatles Beats are over 80 and the songs related are completely isolated in the Beatles songs. It lets you focus on the drums, besides allowing the player to practice until perfection. Playing them slowly gives the hang of it and speeding up to reach the original tempo gives the real feel of playing drums. The freestyle mode is another feature in the rock band playing that is cool and is a novel version that lets the player to play drums on his own. It literally works as a basic electronic drum set, but is not realistic as it lacks velocity, yet it facilitates practicing in a basic way.

Expert mode is the right mode even for a beginner as this mode plays all the real beats and it is worth learning. All the other modes are easier, but they leave out certain beats that may lead to confusion later. The other modes prove to be more of a video game, offering less practice to become an appropriate drummer. Playing real drums is a must learn mode on rock band so that moving to playing real drums is convenient, although practically it is difficult. This transition makes it easier than before with rock band mainly owing to its suitability of teaching people to play drums.

Rock band is a beat release of video game into the genre of rhythm and music gaming. Having the best action movements, this band game has incredible features for starters allowing them to create their own logo and characters. Players can create individual avatars and play the musical instruments such as lead guitar, drums, lead vocals and bass guitar. These musical instruments can be played simultaneously as very much the part of the same band as each musical instrument is tweaked such that it challenges every player to perform better and the best.

The Supremes were an all female group from the 1960s that was signed to Motown Records. The group was formed in the year 1959 as The Primettes in the city of Detroit by Milton Jenkins, who was managing an all male group known as The Primes. The initial members of the group were Diana Ross, Betty McGlown, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. These girls had grown up in the projects of Detroit and formed the group as a female version of The Primes that included Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams. These two later formed The Temptations.

Initially, The Supremes did not perform their own songs, but those by other renowned artists such as The Drifters and Ray Charles. They performed at social clubs, talent shows and sock hops in Detroit, and many of their 'live' gigs were mimed, as was the normal practice during this period when backing groups were not only not freely available, but also the expense was not considered worthwhile when songs could be mimed. It was a period when fans paid to SEE their stars, not listen to them singing live.

During this period, none of the girls was a designated lead singer, each taking on the role depending on the song. Shortly after the group was formed, they had a guitarist on board, Marvin Tarplin. With the guitarist, they could sing live instead of miming and this distinguished them from many of the other aspiring groups in Detroit.

The girls entered a local talent competition and won. With this under their belt, they decided to make a record and sign on with Motown. Diana managed to convince a neighbor, Smokey Robinson, to get them an audition with a Motown executive. They auditioned for Berry Gordy Jr. (father of Diana Ross's eldest daughter Rhonda) who refused to sign them because they were too young. Not to be deterred, they approached Lupine Records and got their first single out entitled "Tears of Sorrow", which was followed by their second one "Pretty Baby." None of these were hits.

During this time, McGlown was engaged to be married and decided to drop out of the group. Barbara Martin quickly took her place. The Primettes convinced Gordy to allow them to perform as background singers and he did. They performed for Mary Wells and Marvin Gaye among others. Finally, Gordy relented and signed them up as The Supremes in 1961. In 1962 Barbara left the group and went home to start a family living the remaining three Supremes to carry on.

In their first two years, The Supremes had no hits so they sang backup for The Temptations as well as Marvin Gaye. In the latter part of 1963, Gordy selected Diana as The Supremes lead singer. Their lucky break came with "lovelight" coming in at #23 in December of 1963. In 1964, they recorded "Where Did Our Love Go", which became their first number one single in America in August of that year. It was also their first song to be put on British pop charts, reaching number 3. This song opened up the flood gates of number one singles in the US by The Supremes.

The singles included "Come See about Me", "Back in My Arms Again", "Stop! In the Name of Love," and "Baby Love," this was simultaneously number one in the UK. It was also nominated for a Grammy in 1965 in the category of Best Rhythm and Blues Recording. Another hit "You Keep Me Hangin' On" received a Grammy in 1966 for the Best Pop Single. Among the number one hits were "I Hear a Symphony" and "You Can't Hurry Love." In the year 1966 they released their first album "The Supremes A' Go-Go."

They had become stars, featuring in movies and producing soundtracks for them. They began touring internationally and endorsing many products. The Supremes broke racial boundaries and were appealing to both black and white audiences. They were among the first musical groups to break such boundaries performing in supper clubs including the New York club Copacabana.

Their songs mixed rock & roll with R&B, making it difficult for others to copy their style. They also began appearing on TV shows regularly including The Ed Sullivan Show, on which they appeared 17 times, The Hollywood Palace, Hullabaloo and The Della Reese Show. It was on the back of The Supremes that groups like The Jackson 5 and The Four Tops found their own success.

As is the way of most famous groups, success brought internal wrangles. The group later became Diana Ross and the Supremes in 1967. Additional changes included replacing Florence Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Diana left The Supremes in 1970 to pursue a solo career, and was replaced by Jean Terrell and The Supremes carried on.

Many young ladies joined and left the Supremes including Scherrie Payne, Susaye Green, and Lynda Laurence who joined the group in the mid 70s. In 1977 the 18 year reign of The Supremes came to an end. 12 of their singles had been number one on the charts. Of all the groups signed by Motown, they were the most successful, rivaling The Beatles in popularity around the world.

In a truly peaceful setting, War takes center stage
So beautiful, that area of the Niagara Gorge where Artpark sits. Going there feels like visiting the cradle of something powerful. Hearing music there, on a night like Tuesday, can trick you into believing you're in paradise. You aren't, actually. But “pretty close” is often good enough. And on Tuesday, as '70s funk collective War kicked off Artpark's Tuesdays in the Park series for the summer ...

I do treadmill cardio for an hour and a half a day. I prefer music with a serious beat to keep me motivated. I think I've covered the basics. Current Top 40, Queen, Grease, Footloose, Dirty Dancing, Top Gun, 60s R&B, and light 80's. I'll list more later.
Can I get specific titles with Singer/Band. Thanks!

Cover Bands And Why We Love Them

A cover band is a music group that performs songs originally produced by other famous bands. Sometimes, they dress like the original band, take on their persona, and rock out like the classics. Some of them name their group as a spoof to the original and come up with creative names like Odyssey instead of Journey. Cover bands are different than a band covering a song from an original artist. Cover bands strictly perform the band they are trying to emulate. Some bands that are trying to make their way into the music industry will do a cover of a song from a more famous band, but rerecord it to make it sound like their own.

Some cover bands choose the tops songs from a certain decade to perform. Rotel and the Hot Tomatoes is a cover band the goes through three decades during their performance and have costume changes for each decade. They play the top hits from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Another successful cover band that performs hits from a certain time era is the Three Dog Night band. They cover a variety of songs from the 60s and 70s. A fun place to go in Austin, TX is the Cedar Street courtyard where you can see the band called the Spazmatics perform 80s hits.

While some cover bands focus on a particular decade or decades, other bands that do covers focus on a single group. They are often called tribute cover bands. A popular tribute band that covers all the greatest hits from the original band called ABBA is called Gabba. A tribute band that performs only Beatle’s hits is called the Egg Men, and they got their name from one of the Beatle’s songs. Tribute bands are so fun for people who had loved the original band back when they were in their prime. Some bands don’t tour anymore, so fans will watch tribute bands to hear their favorite music live.

Besides covering bands from a certain decade or specific band, some groups will perform a cover and change the genre of the original song. For example, Trans Siberian Orchestra performs traditional classical style Christmas songs and turns them into rock songs. Some jazz artists will take a famous rock song and play it on an instrument like a saxophone or a piano to change the genre of it.

On a different scale, there are also a lot of impersonators that act exactly like an iconic star. You have probably seen these folks in Las Vegas or Hollywood. Perhaps the most famous person to be impersonated is Elvis Presley. Other iconic stars are also impersonated like Cher or Madonna. Some impersonators just walk around the street acting like the original star, and others perform shows and concerts.

Times change, song remains the same
The Village of today is a place of chain stores, condos and apartments with sky-high rents. This was once the place where — as documented in Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up in Blue” — there was “music in the cafes at night and revolution in the air.”
