African Marriages - Part 2

Almost all African marriages include dowry or bride's price or "lobolo" or "bohadi". A young man would not feel good if he is not required to give "lobolo" or "bohadi", The amount of money or property or number of cows varies from one family to another and from one tribe to another. A young man pays "lobolo" according to the standards and status of that family or tribe. When the two negotiating teams have finished their job, which might involve two to three visits depending on whether they do not reach a deadlock, a date for sealing a covenant or relationship between two families would be arranged. Normally the prospective bride's family arranges that ceremony, which is also coupled with the ritual of receiving and accepting the prospective bridegroom into the family as their son. A sheep is slaughtered and its blood is used as a material to seal to a covenant and confirm a relationship between two families.

Traditionally a man does not pay the bride's price or dowry or "bohadi" or "lobolo" in full because that would be interpreted to mean that his family is breaking ties with his prospective wife's family. In fact, the young man must be seen to be struggling to pay the rest of the amount, and a concession would be made for him to pay less than the amount originally required. He would pay 80 to 90% of the "bohadi" or "lobolo", and the rest would remain as a balance or debt. The young man is not expected to pay this amount of money or cows. He is eternally indebted to his family-in-law at two levels, (1) for receiving a precious gift of a wife, and (2) for the balance of "lobolo" or "bohadi" that he does not have to pay.

It should be noted that "lobolo" or "bohadi" is not a price to purchase a woman, but a gift to the other woman's family, and a test to a young man to check if he is capable of providing for his family. Women are precious in African culture, and they are not for sale. In fact, women are encouraged to leave if they are continuously mistreated, especially if both families have tried but have not been able to resolve that conflict. The same applies to a young man. If a young woman misbehaves, and both families are not able to solve that problem, a young man is encouraged either to divorce or (in some cases) to consider polygamy.

African Marriage ceremonies vary from one family to another and from one tribe to another. Marriage is a community event. Among many traditional Africans, there are no invitation cards. For example, in Sesotho culture, a white flag or cloth is flown higher at the bride's home as a sign to communicate two messages, namely, (1) that there is a wedding in this house, and (2) the entire community is invited.

African marriage ceremonies are often conducted on one day, or two days or even several days - depending on the traditions of the family or tribe. Ceremonies vary from one family to another. There is a lot of preparation in terms of songs to be sung, speeches to be made, counselling of the bride and bridegroom by representatives from families, community, elders, church, king or chief of the territory, friends and neighbours. There is a lot of exchanging of gifts between the two families, gifts from the community members to the newly wedded couple. Marriage brings two families into one.

I think Africa has something to offer to the world in terms of its family and marriage structures, especially in the light of the fact that marriages are under attack and are crumbling. Extended families are critical in ensuring the stability and support of marriages. Uncles and aunts, grannies, and relatives should play a critical role in forming a support for the newly wedded couple. This will ensure a healthy family, healthy tribe or society, and a healthy nation. The wellness and health of the family are critical in providing a healthy nation, and producing peaceful societies.

Like in many cultural groups, African marriages are not perfect and still need to learn from other cultural groups, but Africa has its unique contribution to the world in terms of supportive family and marriage structures, and the concept and practice of "ubuntu".

Singing And Acting Career Of Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra, also affectionately also known as Old Blue Eyes was probably the most outstanding popular music singer of the 20th century. Sinatra's only real rivals during those days were perhaps a handful of other singing superstars such as Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Presley, and the fab four or The Beatles.

In a professional singing and acting career spanning more than six decades, Sinatra demonstrated a remarkable ability to maintain his popular appeal to his fans across almost two generations. This is a ringing endorsement of the status of this singing and acting superstar.

Frank Sinatra's singing career started during the big band swing era of the 1930s and 1940s. His first number one hit on the charts was in 1940 and was still making million-selling recording rights up to 1994.

This superb entertainer was able to take the work of great composers of the 1920s and 1930s, such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern , Cole Porter and Richard Rodger and turn their compositions into masterful singing pieces and enshrined them into eternal classics.

Sinatra was the son of a humble fireman and dropped out of high school to pursue a career in singing much to his father's disappointment. In September 1935, the young Sinatra appeared as part of the singing group, the Hoboken Four on Major Bowes' Original Amateur Hour show. The quartet won the radio show contest and toured the country with Bowes.

Sinatra then took up a job as a singing waiter and MC at the Rustic Cabin in Englewood, New Jersey. He was singing there in early 1939, when he was talent spotted by trumpeter Harry James, who had organized his own big band after leaving Benny Goodman, which was another famous big band leader of that era. Harry James hired Sinatra as a singer in his band and Frank made his first recording on July 13, 1939.

At the end of 1939, Sinatra accepted an offer from the more popular big band leader Tommy Dorsey. Over the next two and a half years, he was featured on 16 Top Ten hits recorded by Dorsey and his band, amongst them the legendary chart-buster "I'll Never Smile Again," and was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

During this while, young Sinatra also performed on various radio shows with Tommy Dorsey and his band. He also appeared with the band in movies such as Las Vegas Nights in 1941 and Ship Ahoy in 1942.

Frank Sinatra started out his solo singing career in early 1942 showcasing his singing talent by recording a four-song session arranged and conducted by Axel Stordahl. One of the songs was Cole Porter's "Night and Day," and that song went on to become his first hit chart entry under his very own name.

His big break came from his engagement as a singing support act to Benny Goodman at the Paramount Theatre in New York, which began on New Year's Eve. This engagement catapulted his singing career and made him the first real teen singing idol, with throngs of girls screaming and swooning in the aisles.

From then on, Sinatra's singing career never looked back. His singing talent scored him another successful chart topper with "There Are Such Things," occupying number one position in January 1943. Then in August that same year, the singing superstar did another chart buster with "In the Blue of the Evening". From then on, Sinatra successfully scored hits after hits with songs such as "It's Always You,", "I'll Be Seeing You," and "All or Nothing at All".

Frank Sinatra did many radio shows around that time and in April 1943, he made his first credited appearance in a movie, singing "Night and Day" in Reveille With Beverly which launch his acting career.

This was followed by Higher and Higher in which he played a minor role acting as himself and followed up with another movie, Step Lively which was released in mid 1944 in which he played a larger role. In November 1944, he returned to cutting records, beginning with a cover version of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" which was again another chart topper. Sinatra then hired Styne and Cahn to write the songs for his first MGM musical, Anchors Aweigh, and over the course of his successful singing career, he recorded more songs by Cahn than by any other songwriter.

Anchors Aweigh, in which Sinatra was paired with Gene Kelly, was released in July 1945 and went on to become the most successful film in 1945. He then went on to appear in many more movies such as MGM musicals On the Town and lower budget ones such as The Kissing Bandit.

At the same time, he continued to hit eight Top Ten hits in 1947 to 1949 which included "Mam'selle," which hit number one in May 1947, and "Some Enchanted Evening," from the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical South Pacific.

By 1950s, his singing career was on the decline, but he was still very active. At the fall of 1950 marks his first venture into television. His film work had nearly subsided athough in March 1952 he was featured in the drama Meet Danny Wilson which tested his acting skills on stage which gave him the opportunity to sing some of his greatest songs such as Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer's "That Old Black Magic," "I've Got a Crush on You" by George and Ira Gershwin, and "How Deep Is the Ocean" by Irving Berlin.

Then in 1955, the singing superstar hit number one again with the single "Learnin' the Blues" and the 12 inch album, "In the Wee Small Hours "which was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Sinatra acted in a television special in November 1965, A Man and His Music, and released a corresponding double vinyl album, which reached the Top Ten chart and also went gold. A Man and His Music won the 1966 Grammy for Album of the Year. Following this release, Old Blue Eyes catapulted back to number one on the singles charts for the first time in 11 years with "Strangers in the Night" in July 1966. This song also won him 2 Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Vocal Performance.

Towards the end of 1966, the singer released two more Top Ten albums, Sinatra At The Sands and That's Life. In April 1967, he was again number one on the singles charts with "Somethin' Stupid," a duet which he sung with his daughter Nancy Sinatra. Frank Sinatra's Greatest Hits was a compilation of his 1960s singles successes released in August 1968, was a million-seller.

Then in March 1969, perhaps the most recognized Sinatra song, "My Way," with lyrics specially written for him by Paul Anka was released. This amazing single reached the Top 40, and an album of the same name hit the Top Ten and went gold.

Frank Sinatra then announced his retirement in early 1971 at the age of 55. However, he burst into the limelight again in 1973 with a gold album and a TV special called Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back. In the twilight of his career, Sinatra cut down on producing albums, acting in movies and television in favor of live concert tours.

For six years, he did not release any albums until March 1980 with a three-LP set, Trilogy: Past, Present, Future. The most memorable track from the trilogy set was perhaps "Theme From New York, New York," the title song from the 1977 movie.

He returned to Capitol Records in 1993 and recorded Duets, on which he re-recorded his old songs, joined by other popular singers such as Tony Bennett, Elvis Costello, KD Lang and Bono of U2. It became his biggest-selling album selling over three million copies world wide. This was followed up in 1994 by Duets II, which won the 1995 Grammy Award for Traditional Pop Performance.

Frank Sinatra finally retired from acting and performing entertainment when he turns 80 in 1995. He died of a heart attack 2 years later when he was 82. Today, his songs are still heard in concert halls and clubs all over the world.

Protecting your Website Legally From the Music Industry

In the connected world, where businesses pop up like dandelions and anyone with a computer can upload video, audio and text-based content to be shared across the web, it is of growing importance to understand the potential legal ramifications associated with these technical advancements.

Most internet businesses make use of some sort of rich media on their websites such as video or music. What most don’t realize is that even the smallest S-Corp can find itself in hot water if it doesn’t understand the basics.

The intent of this article is to focus on the use of production music (music on your website) and the ways you can protect your business or yourself from copyright infringement.

What is production music?

Production music is music intended for use in connection with films, corporate videos, Television shows, commercials, Internet video, multimedia and any other form of media that requires music.

If you’ve ever listened to an advertisement on the radio, watched an infomercial, or heard menu music on a video game, then you have probably heard production music.

Production music libraries cover a multitude of genres, providing music for most tastes at varying levels of quality. Traditionally, production music comes in shorter lengths. These lengths are normally 30 seconds, 60 seconds and 90 seconds.

Production music also comes in different variations known as full and reduced versions. Reduced versions are identical to full versions with the exception of one or possibly two of the main instruments having been removed.

Who uses production music?

Production music is most widely used by industry experts like; video editors, producers, music supervisors, videographers, and creative directors. Although increasingly, it is being used by relative amateurs for websites, podcasts, streaming video and more.

How do I Get a License?

Something called a Synchronization License or Sync License must be obtained for the music in question before it can be utilized in any audiovisual production, such as a motion picture, television program, television commercial, video production, or website.

Sync Licenses come in different shapes and sizes. Two of the most popular are a Drop License and Blanket License. They are most commonly made available by production music publishers such as Slynth (www.slynth.com).

How do I get a Sync License?

Production music publishers will usually license music on what is called a needle drop (a.k.a Drop License) or a Blanket License.

A needle drop or Drop License is a license that requires payment for individual songs. The prices for each song vary depending on the type of production in which the song is being used. The rule of thumb when pricing Drop Licenses is - the larger the audience, the higher the price. (Rate cards can be requested with Drop Licenses.)

A Blanket license is a license that affords a user either a set number of music selections or unlimited use of music selections in any given production. The distinction between a blanket and drop license is a drop is issued for one song, a blanket for many. Obtaining a blanket license involves dozens of variables, so it usually requires some negotiation. Venues such as radio stations or night clubs will often require blanket licenses.

Is A Sync License the Same as a Performance License (Permission from the Musician)?

Unfortunately, no it isn’t. Obtaining a Sync License doesn’t absolve you from getting legal permission from the artist. And, seeing as musicians aren’t known for their knowledge of the legal system, you might imagine that obtaining such a license would be rather difficult. In actuality, the opposite is the case.

The reason for the relative ease of obtaining a Performance License is most musicians are represented by one of two agencies or “performance right societies” that handle the legal jargon. These societies manage the right of performers and see to it that artists get paid when you play their songs in a “public” venue.

Performance rights societies such as ASCAP, BMI and SESAC collect monies for composers and publishers. These societies handle Performance Licenses and should be consulted before you publish any finalized work.

Who needs a performance license?

Anyone who uses copyrighted music in a public place including radio and television stations and/or their networks; all new media, like the Internet and mobile technologies such as ringbacks and ringtones; satellite services like XM and Sirius; discos, nightclubs, bars, restaurants, hotels, and other venues. This includes digital jukeboxes and live concerts. All should obtain a performance license.

What happens if I don’t have a performance license?

Production music users are in danger of copyright infringement without a license from a performing rights organization. If you’re an individual with a small audience and no real money (ie you’re not a business), then you are at lower risk of having suit brought against you for copyright infringement.

However, if you’re an individual with a large audience or you’re a business or organization and you fail to obtain the proper licensing, be prepared to hire a lawyer.

The basic rule of thumb with rich media on your website is this: If you’re going to use audio without a license, make sure no one sees it. This may be a difficult rule for most webmasters to cope with, as the purpose of internet businesses is to be seen. Remember the best choice, if you have a large enough audience, is to be safe and purchase the required licenses.

That 70s Show(www.buydvdhere.com)

That '70s Show, an American television sitcom, centers on the lives of a group of teenagers living in Point Place, Wisconsin, a fictional suburb of either Kenosha or Green Bay[1] from May 17, 1976 to December 31, 1979. It debuted on August 23, 1998 and its final episode aired May 18, 2006. That '70s Show proved to be a launching pad for the film careers of its young stars, mostly unknowns at the time they were hired. The show remains in syndication on FX and various broadcast television stations in the United States, Virgin 1, Paramount Comedy 1 & MTV ONE in the United Kingdom, CH in Canada, as well as the Seven Network and FOX8 in Australia. It will begin airing on ABC Family and The N in 2008.

Series overview
History

That '70s Show is the brainchild of 3rd Rock From the Sun creators Bonnie and Terry Turner and writer Mark Brazill. The working title for the series was Teenage Wasteland, before being changed to That '70s Show. Other names considered were The Kids Are Alright, Feelin' All Right, and Reeling in the Years,[1] all of which are names of popular songs during the period. The series was commissioned by the Fox Network, and the first season premiered on Sunday, August 23, 1998, with an initial order of 22 episodes (extended to 25 on January 12, 1999).[3] The series did well, rating highly among several target demographics, including adults aged 18-49, as well as teen viewers.[3] In February 1999, FOX ordered a second season, and as ratings rose the following September, the network opted to renew the series for two more seasons, bringing the total to four.[3] Continuing success saw changing timeslots (Sundays to Mondays to Tuesdays to Wednesdays to Thursdays), as well as four additional seasons. The eighth season was announced to be the final season of the show on January 17, 2006, [4] and the final episode was filmed a month later, on February 17, 2006.[5] "That '70s Finale" originally aired on May 18, 2006.

Characters

Set in Point Place, Wisconsin, That '70s Show depicts the life of teenager Eric Forman (Topher Grace) and his five teenage friends: Donna Pinciotti (Laura Prepon), his girlfriend and next-door neighbor, Steven Hyde (Danny Masterson), a rebellious stoner who was adopted by the Forman family and lives in their basement, Michael Kelso (Ashton Kutcher), a dim-witted narcissistic ladies man, Jacqueline Burkhart (Mila Kunis), a self-involved high school cheerleader overly preoccupied with wealth and status, and Fez (Wilmer Valderrama), the nicknamed immigrant from an ambiguous country of origin and whose hormones are raging out of control. Relationships among the teens are explored, the primary focus being between Eric and Donna, who are the responsible ones, as evidenced in episodes such as "Dine and Dash". Their relationship sharply contrasts with the on-again, off-again relationship between Kelso and Jackie, who were usually portrayed as mutually obsessed despite their arguments and denials of love to spite one another. In both relationships, the couples would have harsh disagreements, but would come to terms with their differences. Jackie eventually moved on to Hyde and later Fez as the series progessed. Other main characters include Eric's overbearing war veteran father, Red (Kurtwood Smith), his doting mother Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp), who is struggling to be a full-time mom and housewife while working as a nurse in a local hospital, and his older sister Laurie (Lisa Robin Kelly, 1998-2003 and Christina Moore, 2003-2004), whose promiscuity is the brunt of many jokes by the teenagers but does not deter Kelso from making moves on her. The show also depicts the relationship of Midge and Bob Pinciotti (Tanya Roberts and Don Stark), Donna's dimwitted parents, both of whom are easily influenced by the 1970s movements and fads, which places occasional stress on their marriage. Tommy Chong appeared as a frequently recurring character, Leo, the aging hippie owner of the Foto Hut.

Eighth season changes

Eric Forman and Michael Kelso were written out of the series after the seventh season, as actors Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher were to star in movies to be filmed during that season (Grace in Spider-Man 3 and Kutcher in The Guardian). Longtime character Leo returned with a more prominent role to help fill the gap. A new character named Randy Pearson, played by Josh Meyers, was introduced to take Eric Forman's place. Another new character, Samantha, played by Judy Tylor, was added to the cast as Hyde's wife for nine episodes. Kelso appears in the first four episodes of the eighth season (with Kutcher credited as a special guest star) before moving to Chicago; both he and Eric returned for the series final episode. The location of the show's introduction was also changed from Eric's 1969 Vista Cruiser to the "Circle".

Elements of the show
The show gained recognition for providing a bold retrospective of a decade full of political events and technological milestones that have dramatically shaped today's world. The show tackled significant social phenomena of the times, such as feminism, progressive sexual attitudes (although in some episodes more traditional values would carry the day, such as when Red ended his friendship with a fellow veteran when he was unknowingly invited to a key party), the economic hardships of recession, mistrust in the American government among blue-collar workers, political figures such as Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, teenage drug use, and developments in entertainment technology, from the television remote ("the clicker") to the videogame Pong. The first season of the show focused extensively on current events and cultural trends, with each successive season focusing less and less on the socio-political aspects of the story, to the point that the decade simply became a backdrop against which the storylines unfolded. Likewise, the first season of the show also featured a recurring, non-comedic storyline in which the Forman family was in constant danger of losing their home due to Red's hours being cut back at the auto parts plant where he worked. Recurring storylines in later seasons, even when they carried dramatic elements, were always presented as primarily comedic. Signature elements of That '70s Show include surreal, sometimes elaborate, dream sequences to depict various characters' vivid imaginations, some of which include references to or parodies of fads and films of the time, such as Star Wars, Rocky, and Grease, and the 360-degree scenes, also known as "The Circle" (seen below). The "Circle" is used to illustrate the teens' marijuana use, typically occurring in Eric's basement. All of these segments combine nonsensical dialogue with deadpan humor. Of note, no actual smoking is depicted in these scenes, as smoke is only visible in the background and foreground. Other stylistic elements include the use of split screens, which tends to involve two characters talking to each other about a given topic, as two other people with foil viewpoints speak. The viewpoints are disturbingly similar yet contradictory in key ways for optimal comic effect. The series is something of a homage to the hit 1970s series Happy Days, which itself looked back twenty years to the Wisconsin of the 1950s.

Timeline

Due to the show's long run, the timeline was noticeably slowed. The show was set in May 1976 upon its August 23, 1998 premiere. After twelve episodes of the first season (as well as episode 23, "Grandma's Dead", due to it being aired out of production order), the series transitioned to 1977, where it remained until late in the third season, when the time setting was 1978 until early in the sixth season. The remaining episodes took place in 1979. Hyde had an 18th birthday in 1978, despite dialogue suggesting that he is older than Eric, who turned 17 in episode 2, "Eric's Birthday" (set in 1976). Eric then turned 18 in episode 131, "Magic Bus" in 1978, two years after turning 17. This, combined with the fact that there were holiday-themed episodes almost every season, indicated a sense of time on That '70s Show that was loose at best. M*A*S*H, which aired for eleven years despite the Korean War lasting only three years, also made liberal use of time settings. The year is determined in the last scene of the opening credits, which reveals a close-up of a Wisconsin license plate that reads the names of the creators and the sticker with the two-digit year — in this case, either "76", "77", "78" or "79" and, in the final episode, "80".The year stickers for Wisconsin plates are issued for the upcoming twelve months (e.g., a sticker for "80" would be issued in 1979). The plate also appears at the end as the production logo for Carsey-Werner, also showing the year.
British remake

In 1999, the show was remade by the British ITV network as Days Like These using almost verbatim scripts with minor changes to cultural references. The show failed to attract an audience and was removed from the schedules after 10 of the 13 episodes were broadcast. The remaining three episodes were shown in later reruns. After the failure of the UK remake, rival commercial terrestrial Five started broadcasting the original show in primetime before moving it to a post 11 p.m. timeslot.
International broadcasts of US version

The American version of the show is currently shown on Trouble, Paramount Comedy, Virgin 1, MTV One and Bravo 2 in the UK and Ireland, and RTÉ Two, Channel 6 in Ireland, Paramount Comedy in Spain, Star World in Asia, Jack TV in the Philippines, Comedy Central in the Netherlands, TV2 Zulu in Denmark, TV 2 (Norway) in Norway, Seven Network and FOX8 in Australia, MBC4 in the Middle East, Sony Entertainment Television in Brazil and Latin America, Sitel in the Republic of Macedonia, Eesti Televisioon in Estonia and Nelonen in Finland, TV 2 originally (later airing on rival station TV3 (New Zealand)), in New Zealand, Kanaal 2 in Belgium, NRJ12 in France, Kabel 1 in Germany, TV4 (Sweden) in Sweden, B92 in Serbia, Nova TV in Croatia and Atlas TV in Montenegro.
Theme song

The show usually opens with the theme song, "In the Street", by Alex Chilton and Chris Bell of the band Big Star. It was initially sung by Todd Griffin, but beginning with the second season, the song was performed by the band Cheap Trick, whose version is referred to as "That '70s Song (In the Street)". In a Rolling Stone magazine article in 2000, Chilton thought it was ironic that he is paid $70 in royalties each time the song is aired. [6] According to the official That '70s Show website, Danny Masterson (Steven Hyde) yells "Hello Wisconsin!" during the first season and Rick Nielsen (lead guitarist/songwriter for Cheap Trick) in all other seasons.[1] The lyrics were also slightly different during the first season, with instead of "We're all alright!" being shouted twice (a reference to Cheap Trick's 1978 single "Surrender"), "Whooa yeah!" is heard. The first season's theme was also in the key of G, whereas in subsequent seasons it was lowered to the key of D. Alternate holiday versions of the theme song were arranged for Halloween, Christmas and musical specials, using organ music and bells, respectively.

DVD releases

That '70s Show is currently being released on DVD by FOX Home Entertainment at an increment of two seasons per year. Season seven was the most recent release in Region 1, being released on October 162007 with Season 8 being released on April 12008. The DVDs contain various bonus features, such as the original promos for the episodes that aired on FOX on the original air date, retrospective interviews with various cast members, and commentaries by director David Trainer on selected episodes. The first five seasons were released in four slimcases per season with one disc per slimcase, however, beginning with season six, FOX scaled back the sets to two cases with two discs in each.

The Four Tops was founded in 1953 in Detroit, Michigan with its original members Levi Stubbs as lead singer, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Renaldo "Obie" Benson and Lawrence Payton. The quartet was originally called "The Four Aims" and their kind of music included jazz, doo-wop, R&B, soul music, disco, adult contemporary and showtunes. Maybe one of the groups whose original members remained intact for more than forty years, The Four Tops made hits together from 1953 until 1997.

The group has contributed a great deal to the rise and reputation of Motown Sound. Unlike many other groups whose lead singer is a tenor, Levi Stubbs is a baritone. This made the group's unusual music artistry. Stubbs is a brother of Joe Stubbs of The Falcons and a cousin of Jackie Wilson. The group brought the success of two Billboard Hot 100 number one hits "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" and "Reach Out I'll Be There". These were done with the songwriting and production team of Holland-Dozier-Holland for Motown.

The Four Tops had a chance to work with Frank Wilson when Holland-Dozier-Holland moved out of Motown in 1967; then in 1972 the group moved further over to ABC Records due to Motown's decision to leave Detroit and transferred to California. With ABC Records, the group was able to chart singles until the late 70s. From then on, they worked with different music groups which included among others Motown, Casablanca, and Arista. During this time there were ups and downs in the group's singing career.

With the Holland-Dozier-Holland team, The Four Tops were able to create hits like "Baby I Need Your Loving" which was originally an instrumental track without lyrics. From a meaningless arrangement of notes, "Baby I Need Your Loving" was transformed into a no. 1 hit on the United States Billboard pop charts in 1964. This song was such a big hit in many trend-setting audio stations in the United States. This success signaled the group's decision to venture into another genre of music, moving away from jazz to music that is more in line with "Baby I Need Your Loving".

The group's popularity was complemented with its members' cohesiveness. Working hard until the 80s still with its original members, The Four Tops focused more on touring and live performances, with fewer recordings. It should be noted that they have recorded only one album since the late 80s entitled "Christmas Here with You" which was released in 1995.

The year 1997 proved to be disastrous when 59 year old Lawrence Payton died of liver cancer. Lawrence has spent 44 years with the quartet group when he succumbed to the disease. After Payton's demise, the trio now named The Tops was formed by the surviving three original members Levi Stubbs, Obie Benson and Duke Fakir. A year after, Theo Peoples, former Temptations member became the new fourth member, restoring The Four Tops.

To give credit to the group's achievements in the music world, it was inducted in 1990 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 1999 into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. It was also included in the list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, rank no. 79 by Rolling Stone Magazine in 2004.

In early 2000, Levi Stubbs suffered a stroke and became ill of cancer. With this sad event, Theo Peoples took over Stubb's position and Ronnie McNair was recruited to fill in the position of Payton. Consequently, Peoples became the group's lead singer. Two other original members soon died: Obie Benson in July 2005 while the long-suffering Stubbs died in October 2008 while asleep at his home in Detroit, leaving Fakir as the only surviving original member of the group.

There were several television specials that featured the group, most of which focused on the contributions of the original members like Levi Stubbs, Lawrence Payton and Obie Benson. The group is now composed of Theo Peoples, Ronnie McNair, Lawrence Payton, Jr. who is also known as Roquel, and the original Abdul Fakir.

Even with its new members, the group still performs during their concerts the original hits like "Baby I Need Your Loving", "When She Was My Girl", "Ask The Lonely", "Walk Away Renee", "Reach Out I'll Be There", "Bernadette", "Standing in the Shadows of Love", and "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)".

The group's latest Definitive DVD under Motown titled "Reach Out" was released in November 2008. "The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award" was awarded to The Four Tops during the 51st Grammy Awards.

Selecting your music for your wedding reception should not be put off until the last moment. A successful reception is definitely a team effort between the bridal couple and the DJ.

Select all your "must do" music as early as possible. This would include the entrance music, bride and groom's first dance, father and daughter, son and his mother's dance, and bridal party. The bride and groom's first dance is usually their favorite song or some song that means a lot to them. Some ideas are: "My One and Only Love" by Louis Armstrong, "A Moment Like This" by Kelly Clarkson, "It's Your Love" by Tim McGraw & Faith Hill or "In My Life" by the Beatles.

Bride dancing with her father. The most popular song is "Daddy's Little Girl", However, "I am Your Child" by Barry Manilow, "My Girl" by the Temptations, "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder are other favorite choices

Sometimes the whole bridal party gets involved. They could include songs such as "We are Family" by Sister Stedge, or "Everyone Have Fun Tonight" by Wang Chung.

During the cocktail hour, which follows, select music that is upbeat, so the guests won't fall asleep while waiting for their dinner. Perhaps songs by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald or Dean Martin. You could even include some big band selections, such as Glenn Miller.

During the dinner continue with Frank Sintra, but later change to Jimmy Buffet or John Mayer. Your younger guests will enjoy this type of music, and the older guests will enjoy the classic jazz melody. If you are planning on your first dances immediately following your dinner, the music should swing into high gear!

The next hour is just dance music. Try to play something for everyone ~ 50's 60's 70's 80's 90's, disco, classic, waltz, polka, rock 'n' roll, tango,

In the last hour continue dance music, but include group songs such as YMCA Songs, hip-hop songs, Congo Lines.

You should give your choice of songs to the DJ at least a month in advance of the reception. Ask the DJ what songs he has in his collection, and which ones he doesn't have on hand.

Give the DJ a neatly written list of songs which you want him to play. Also make sure you have the correct titles, or the wrong song might be played.

Now just sit back ~ wait for that great day and enjoy yourself!!!

Everything But the Girl always seemed like one of those ridiculous British names for disposable pop bands of the ’80s (see: Pop Will Eat Itself, Wet Wet Wet). But that band’s singer, Tracey Thorn, is definitely not making music for girls and boys anymore: this, her second album, is for mature audiences only.
