Indie Rock Music News

Maria Taylor has already released a number of music hits with the introduction of her first album. She is the epitome of indie-chic, and she can sing. And play guitar, drums and piano. Oh, and she is dating Conor Oberst.

Taylor released her solo music album, "Lynn Teeter Flower," recently, the same time that her beau released his "Four Winds EP", which includes five songs plus a cut from his upcoming eighth album "Cassadaga." The songstress has been recording music half her life and has been an integral member of Azure Ray, Now It’s Overheard and Little Red Rocket; the first two music bands still exist but are currently on hiatus. Two other Taylor sisters and two guests serve as the music band for this new music album produced by Spoon drummer Jim Eno. Many blogs about indie rock music artists get confused that when it comes to Saddle Creek artists so many get confused about their anecdotes. Some authors touted that Taylor sings backup on songs for The Faint and Bright Eyes. Just so everyone is clear, the appropriate way to use this nuanced information is to say that she sang on a friend’s music album. Saddle Creek and the larger indie rock music world is chock full of incestuous band member swapping and guest appearances.

Taylor’s music album was recorded over a period of four weeks in Athens, Ga. with a band member of Now It’s Overheard partner in crime, Andy LeMaster as well as in Omaha with Saddle Creek engineer extraordinaire Mike Mogis. The music album goes between harmony driven pop-rock songs and melancholic acoustic musings. The aptly named opening track "A Good Start" features Taylor’s ethereal vocals advising a friend to quit running from the world. Very emo music, people think, but in fact it is considered indie rock music.

The upbeat melody of "A Good Start" juxtaposes starkly with the next music track, the acoustic and introspective lo-fi cut "Clean Start." The down-tempo songs continue for a few tracks, but come to a screeching halt with the dance-worthy beats of "Irish Goodbye."

Taylor creates a Rilo Kiley-ish work but stays true to her distinct, otherworldly vocals. There are even traces of rap music from a man named RIG, which oddly enough doesn’t disrupt the power of the song, but helps break up the track. Two tracks stand out as profound music compositions. The simple guitars and mellow drums of "No Stars" are augmented and joined by piano and bass as each successive verse builds on the previous. The ambling track "The Ballad of Sean Foley" was co-written by Oberst. The lyrics are all Oberst, but the music is all Taylor; her voice even serves to fill in the holes of his warble. This effect can be felt when listening to Bright Eyes’ new single "Four Winds." Oberst’s voice is at its classical best with Taylor holding him up.

Friday Night Is Music Night Invite Violinist Diana Yukawa

The world's longest-running live music programme, featuring the BBC concert orchestra have invited one of the worlds most pioneering solo violinist, Diana Yukawa, to perform with them for the performance on 5th February 2010.

The performance for Radio 2 will be broadcast live from the Mermaid Theatre in London in recognition of the arranger Angela Morley who died last year at 7:30pm.

Angela was born Wally Stott in Leeds in March 1924. In a career at the BBC, Wally was the musical director for the Goons Show and wrote the signature tune and accompanying music to Hancock's Half Hour. As a musical director in the 1950s, Wally worked with the cream of British pop including the likes of Shirley Bassey, Dusty Springfield and Ronnie Carroll. He also composed a number of tuneful light music pieces including Rotten Row and Canadian in Mayfair.

Following a sex change operation in 1960, Wally took the name Angela Morley and became one of the great orchestral arrangers working mostly in the United States. She won two Emmy Awards for her work with Julie Andrews and was nominated twice for an Oscar for her work on The Slipper and the Rose with the Sherman Brothers and The Little Prince with Lerner and Loewe. She also provided the scores for classic 70s television shows such as Dallas, Dynasty and Cagney and Lacey.

From the 1970s Angela was closely associated with the composer John Williams and aided him in the production of many of his classic film scores - including Star Wars, Superman and ET. It began a long association with the Boston Pops Orchestra.

The London based violinist, Diana Yukawa is due to perform “St Patrick's Day (from the multi Oscar winning motion picture, The Quiet Man) and Laura (from the Oscar winning motion picture Laura) both by John Williams and arranged by Angela Morley.

Diana Yukawa has recently released her new crossover album “The Butterfly Effect” in Japan  which also features a track she performed for the motion picture Shizumanu Taiyo (The Sun that Doesn't Set). Eleven of the fourteen tracks were co written by Diana and recorded at Abbey Road studio in London, a venue often used by Angela Morley.

The revolutionary album is not yet available in the UK but is expected to make an appearance later in 2010.

Tune in to Radio 2 on Friday 5th February 2010 at 7:30pm on Digital, online at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006wrrv or on 88-91 FM.

Tangled Up: Great Pop Masterpiece

Tangled Up is the fourth studio album released by Fascination Records on November 2007 in UK. The music album is by renowned British pop group named Girls Aloud. The production teams behind this are Brian Higgins and Xenomania. The album was titled ‘Tangled Up’ from featured track ‘Close to Love’, the second track of the album. The track named "Sexy! No No No..." was a hit for 16 consecutive weeks, followed by Call the Shots".

The Tangled Up started unsatisfactorily but later become a riot. With uniformly fantastic melodies, audacious creativity and excellent juxtapositions, the album is just superb. Black Jack's soul-inspired chorus, aggressive terrace chant, What You Crying For's, the rave break beat and fingers down guitar fretboard commanding I'm Falling, all are included in this latest release. Girl aloud presents “a bit of ding-a-ling" with distinct musical elements and nuclear-powered music that left everyone speechless.

This pop group has been known for making thrilling and ground breaking albums and after listening to album you can feel a distinctive rhythm coming from intricate jazzy guitar. Sometimes you will feel pretty irresistible with the witty, experimental and diverse music. This album was greatly adored by critics and fans. It’s “Sexy! No No No..." song helped in making the album an unrelenting pop masterpiece.

The tracks "I Think we’re Alone Now", "Close To Love" and "Call The Shots", have monster beat and catchy melody. Marking a backward step, Girls Aloud has offered a generic album with very few surprises. The girl’s vocal talents gets stuck and failed to impress the listeners. The Music track "Close To Love" is based on disco. The “Girl Overboard” is quite good but “Control of the Knife” is like pure album filler. This pop group has delivered excellent music albums in the past and they are capable of much better.

Classical Music

Classical Music

Classic Music” is a term used to refer to a wide range of music that is produced in or rooted in the traditions of Western art, ecclesiastical and concert music. It has been spanning the ages from the 9th century to the present time. Classical music is still played by many of today’s artist and reaches a select group of individuals. The term “classical music” was coined during the 19th Century as an attempt to identify the period from Johann Sebastian Bach to Ludwig van Beethoven which was considered as the “Golden Age” of Classical Music. It was during 1863 that the term classical music was recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary.

One of the main characteristics that distinguish Classical Music from Popular Music is the choice of instrumentation. The instruments used to play classical music were invented before the middle of the 19th Century. The instruments used were the same as those found in an Orchestra, with a few added solo instruments like the Piano, Harpsichord and the Organ.

A few modern electronic instruments have found their way into contemporary Classic Music during the current and last century. In Medieval Times, musical instruments were divided into two categories: Loud and Soft. Louder instruments were used outdoors and in church while Softer toned instruments were used to play music indoors. Classical works often display a certain degree of complexity through the use of development, modulation, variation rather than exact repetition (as seen in Popular Music), Counter point, polyphony and sophisticated harmonies.

Public adoration for classical music has dropped since the 1900s, most particularly in more developed countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. Classical music has taken a back seat behind popular forms of music like: jazz, pop, rock, rap, and many more. Despite the drop in popularity, parents can be seen sending their children to learn Classical Music at a young age in order to incorporate a sense of discipline that is supposedly learned when playing classical music.

Attempts by Classical artist to get their craft to reach a broader audience have seen collaborations between Classical Singers and Pop Music. Notable with this is the work of the late Pavarotti who sang pop songs alongside their artist. In Popular culture, we are able to find classical music along with everyday thing: From movie soundtracks and young Classically trained artists like Josh Groban and Charlotte Church to the smaller things like the music in a music box and TV commercials.

Jamaican D.J or Dance Hall Music

D.J is an acronym for Disc jockey. Over time, this acronym came to represent a musical style derived from reggae music. This form of music involves lyrics chanted over a ‘beat’. A synopsis of the evolution of ‘Dub music’ should shed some light on the nature and structure of D.J or Dance Hall music. Dub is derived from the Version, "B'' or flip side of vinyl polymer reggae recordings. The versions had only the instrumental accompaniment of a song. Dub was not a musical arrangement but was formed from studio techniques, which entails the engineers extending the bass and drum patterns making it the main body of the "B" side replacing the vocalist as the center of attention.

Deejays such as ‘Papa Michigan and General Smiley’ first used the ‘dub’ section of vinyl polymer records altered by the various studio engineers to chant their lyrics over. This act of chanting is referred to as "Deejaying inna rubba dub style". As time progressed the Deejays laid their own rhythmic patterns to chant over. It was at this point that Deejays acquired the capital letters ‘D.J’ that represented the newly formed form of music. Later on the term Dance Hall music was also used to represent, and used interchangeable to mean the same musical form.

Features of DJ or Dance Hall music

The lyrics used in the performance of D.J or Dance Hall music are usually of a social, political, economic, and sometimes humorous nature. During the 1990's the lyrical content of many Dance Hall songs took on a sexually explicit overtone or what some people refer to as "Slackness".  In addition, they also refer to issues such as apartheid in South Africa and black history. For example Brigadier Jerry- Free Mandela and Ernest Wilson & Briggy - Them Free Mandela Others compose lyrics that exploit female.

On the other hand,  performers also used Jamaican proverbs, melodies of Jamaican and Caribbean folks tunes, nursery rhymes used in children's games and ‘wise’  Jamaican sayings for example," A Nu everyting yu du, yu fe mek pickni see''. (Interpretation: It is not wise to allow children to see all that an adult does). They also used the lyrics of American Rhythm and blues, Ballad or pop music and ‘chant’ these over an accompanying reggae rhythm. For example, Ninja and Tinga’s remake of the song ‘I believe the children are the future’ by Whitney Houston.

The use of the voice

Starting from the days of the plantations, repetition has been a main feature of Jamaica's popular music. This element is also one of the main characteristics of D.J or Dance Hall music. The repetitions are usually of single word or phrases. These phrases are repeated at different points throughout the performance and may constitute a chorus. D.J style is considered "half- talk- half sing". The speech pattern is quite rhythmic with syncopation as another feature. Look at the following example which is normally repeated a number of times in the song.

All an / pull up selector now / come down entertainer/ all an pull up selector now/ Come

Down entertainer.

Most times, "nonsense" words are used to fill in when there is a break in the instrumental accompaniment. Other times, high pitch "siren" sounds focusing in the nasal region or low pitches that are sounded in the throat are utilised. Another use of the voice within this musical form is the sliding effect that can be heard in some D.J pieces. These sliding sounds can also be used as" fill-in", also, rhyming of words has also become a feature of D.J music. However this is not unique to D.J but also appears in other folk forms in Jamaica and the Caribbean. The overall style of speaking in D.J or Dance Hall music is a mixture of English and Jamaican Creole.

Vocal Intervals

Ettu is a Jamaican folk form that originated in the parish of Hanover. It is a socio- religious form, where the presence of the ancestral spirit is invited to ensure the success of everyday undertaking. This is done through a ceremony called a "play". The intervals between notes of the songs used in the “play” are quite close to the tonal center. This type of closeness of pitches to the tonal center is also evident in D.J music. In D.J, there is a tonal center chosen by the performer which often seems to have no relationship melodically with the accompaniment. The range of pitches used in the Ettu “play” may not surpass a major 2nd, a major 3rd or a minor 3rd above or below the tonal center.

The question could then be asked, are there filterage or hereditary factors that cause two forms of two different periods to have approximately the same sort of intervallic relationship? One thing that is outstanding is the similarities they do have. The voice is used mainly as a melodic instrument, especially when the performers "redo" American Popular music over a selected reggae rhythmic accompaniment. This kind of integration takes the listener’s ears some time to get accustomed to, especially when a chord or melodic line introduced within the accompaniment has no direct link harmonically with the performers’ tonal center. Rhythm plays a very important part in D.J music and especially in the way the instruments are used.

Instrumentation

D.J music involves the use of the following instruments: drum set, drum machine, piano, synthesizer, bass and rhythm guitar and now computer software. Sometime sound effects are introduced in D.J pieces. These special effects are normally used during a break in the vocal line. The sounds of bongos and hand claps, and cowbells are sometimes heard; these are produced by electronic means i.e. synthesizer or computer software which have these sound programmed in their memory bank.

In a live performance, either all these instruments are employed or combinations. These instruments are also utilized when a band is laying tracks to accompany the Deejays. The use of these instruments will depend on the creativity and inventiveness of the engineer involved in the production, the wishes of the performer or the leader of the band.  Most dancehall music displays a characteristic use of Instruments which retain some of the rhythmic features associated with traditional reggae music.

Not sure what's happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Embrya gets. Embrya simply stated is one of Maxwell's best CDs to date.

This one literally grabs your attention right out of the gate with Everwanting: To Want You To Want and doesn't let go until the very last note of the very last song Embrya, which by the way is another great track.

These days it's a very rare CD on which every single song is good or better than the one before it. This CD is certainly one of those rare CDs.

Overall Embrya is a solid release. Quite possibly Maxwell's best to date. Really sensational from beginning to end. If you're even mildly into Pop music you'll enjoy this CD.

While this entire CD is outstanding some of my favorites are track 2 - I'm You: You Are Me And We Are You, track 8 - Submerge: Til We Become The Sun, and track 11 - Embrya

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Everwanting: To Want You To Want. It's a great track!

Embrya Release Notes:

Maxwell originally released Embrya on June 30, 1998 on the Columbia label.

CD Track List Follows:

1. Everwanting: To Want You To Want

2. I'm You: You Are Me And We Are You (Pt Me & You)

3. Luxury: Cococure

4. Drowndeep: Hula

5. Matrimony: Maybe You

6. Arroz Con Pollo

7. Know These Things: Shouldn't You

8. Submerge: Til We Become The Sun

9. Gravity: Pushing To Pull

10. Eachhoureachsecondeachminuteeachday: Of My Life

11. Embrya

Pop Life: Music provided sound foundation for father and son
The Father's Day PlaylistI've written a lot about my mother, Mary "the Diplomat" Daly. She's a force of nature and, for better or ulcer, an endless source of material. I've written far less about my father, but it's not for a lack of influence. John Daly passed away a year ago, about 12 hours after Michael Jackson died. For me, the timing made sense.
