In this article we're going to present a brief history of musical theater from its early beginnings right up to the present day.

Musicals actually started with the ancient Greeks who put on plays with songs. While they weren't called musicals at the time, that is indeed what they were. The music was crude by today's standards and the stories were not very well done, again by today's standards, but this was the early beginning of what was to become the modern musical.

In the 1700s there were many stage entertainments, though again they were not called musicals. The first English language work that had any lasting value was The Beggar's Opera which was done in 1728. It was a satirical spoof of the times. This was typical of the type of entertainment one would find up until the 1800's.

Musicals, as we know them today, started in the 1800s with the French and Viennese Operettas. The works of Offenbach and Strauss were the first musicals to achieve international popularity.

The contemporary Broadway musical, as we know it today, took its form from these operettas and was done in what we call Minstrel Shows. These eventually gave way to a new form of musical known as Vaudeville.

It wasn't until 1860 with the success of The Black Crook that the American musical really began to take off. During this time we were treated to the great works of Gilbert and Sullivan from 1871 to 1896.

During the early 1900s, composers like George M. Cohan and Victor Herbert gave musicals a new sound and style that is still popular to this very day. This style was then updated by composers such as Jerome Kern, Guy Boulton and P.G. Wodehouse.

By the 1930s the American musical had reached popularity the like of which it had never seen before, with composers such as Rogers and Hart and Cole Porter dominating the era.

By the 40s and 50s we were treated to some of the greatest musicals in what was called the modern era. These musicals included such classics as Oklahoma, Annie Get Your Gun, Kiss Me Kate, The King and I, My Fair Lady, and the list goes on for miles.

In the 1960s we saw such great musicals like Hello Dolly, Fiddler On The Roof, and Hair, which was the first musical in the United States to feature nude actors.

By the 1970s musical theater had become pretty extravagant with the advances in technology and design. The 70s brought us such great shows as A Little Night Music, A Chorus Line, No No Nanette, Sweeney Todd and Evita.

But the hits kept coming and would continue to come, many from Britain. In the 80s we saw such great shows like Cats, Les Miserables and Phantom Of The Opera.

In the 25 years since, literally hundreds of musicals have hit the stage. Some great, some not so great. But what was once a humble beginning is now one of the major forms of entertainment, not only in the United States but all across the world.

What do you think of Northern Lights by Renaissance, a 70's progressive (and later) rock group?

Yahoo! Music played this song for me a couple of times on My Station and I've since bought a greatest hits type CD of this 70's progressive rock band. I like Yes, GTR, Spys and other progressive rock bands of that era (late 70's early 80's) so I guess Renaissance is a no-brainer for me. The lead has a five-octave range and this song is a real hit-type tune that sticks in your mind.

Annie Haslam of Renaissance has one of the best female voices in the history of progressive rock and perhaps the most beautiful female voice I've heard. Yes, I love the band. One of the best unknown bands of the 70's - truly great song writing.

Northern Lights was on their Song for all Season's album which I think, and many think, was not nearly their best album although its a great song. To really appreciate this band, these are their best albums by far:

*Scheherazade and Other Stories - 1975
*Turn of the Cards - 1974
*Ashing are Burning - 1973 (the title track is one of their best songs)
*Novella - 1977

You can't go wrong with any of those albums. I could listen to Annie sing all day.

Here is a source to read reviews on their albums (same top 3 as mine). Also, you can hear the entire "Ashes are Burning" song as well as Mother Russia - another great track: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=603

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Tickets – Petty's Greatest Videos

Tom Petty has always been about simple, pure rock 'n' roll. His album covers aren't known for being off the wall wild or colorful. His lyrics are all about conveying heartbreak or elation with as few words as possible. And his music…well, if you're a fan, you don't need to be told that he knows how to rock.

That meat-and-potatoes approach in Tom Petty's music didn't always cross over to his music videos. While some of them were still pretty straight and to the point—just showing the band performing, for example—a few videos seemed to let Petty run wild, with concepts that could get as creative or colorful as anything else out there.

Here's a quick rundown of Tom Petty's three best-known music videos.

"Free Fallin'": By far his best-known song, "Free Fallin'" continues to resonate with people who saw it for the first time when it came out in 1988. Besides being a definitive Tom Petty track about a girl in Los Angeles, it's got a video that manages to hit people full-on with nostalgia. Seeing the girl in question—or the actress that plays her, at any rate—dressed in O'Neill skate gear as she rides up and down a half-pipe really puts people in the place of L.A. at the end of the '80s. She was a kind of fantasy girl, and L.A. itself was a kind of fantasy city in the song, a place where there are beautiful women and broken hearts. The reality of the city isn't exactly that far off, but the video presents it as a glossy, laidback place where it's eternally summertime. The image it projects is the only real special effect in place, but ask anyone who saw it when it first aired, and you can bet they'll tell you the video is still very memorable.

"Don't Come Around Here No More": This video from 1985 actually featured a far more colorful display of imagination. To this day, it's still well remembered due to some of the disturbing imagery that the video contained. Playing off the story of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, the video sees Petty as a mad hatter, his eyes hidden behind dark shades that make him slightly ominous when he approaches Alice. The key scene here? When Alice realizes she's been turned into a cake, and everyone slices up her body, which has a strawberry filling. It was certainly strange, and doesn't really jibe with the image many people have of Petty, but it was awesome, too.

"Last Dance with Mary Jane": Yet another memorable Petty video, but more because of its concept than its execution. In this, Petty plays a morgue worker who falls in love with a beautiful, if deceased, young woman (plays by Nicole Kidman). He brings her back to his massive home where they dance and he attempts to set up a romantic dinner date for them. It's rather creepy, and no one ever forgets the video after seeing it.

Music Trivia 10 points!!?

This singer, born in California in 1969, first appeared in Annie (The Original). Later came a stint on Kids Incorporated, followed by a one-hit wonder about anti-drug abuse in the late 80's....though the lyrics are rather unclear on that.

Name the singer and the song first for 10 points! Good Luck!!

Marta Marrero (born May 18, 1969), better known as Martika, is an American pop singer and actress. Song called Toy Soldiers.

Stevie Wonder Prepares for Summer Tour

Over the years, the name Stevie Wonder has become synonymous with musical greatness. Since beginning his musical career in 1961, The 57 year old R&B, soul and pop Motown musician, has truly grown into a living legend. To date, Wonder has received twenty-five Grammy Awards, had more than thirty top ten hits and has had four of his albums make it to Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. In addition, in 1989, Wonder was awarded with the ultimate honor, as he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Stevie Wonder was born in 1950 in Saginaw, Michigan. Born prematurely, Wonder was put into an incubator as a baby and after an over-exposure to oxygen, became permanently blind. However, Wonder’s blindness did not prevent him from living life to the fullest and instead, soon became his trademark, rather than his disability.

By the tender age of thirteen, Wonder already had his first major hit: Motown Records’ Fingertips part two. The song was a breakthrough for the young musician and its success contributed to what would soon become one of the most significant, successful and influential careers in pop music history. Wonder followed Fingertips part two with a slew of other hits in the 1960’s, including Uptight (Everything’s Alright), With a Child’s Heart and Blowin’ in the Wind.

The 70’s and 80’s were the years when Wonder’s music took him from superstar to legend. This important time period saw Wonder releasing his biggest albums, which included Music of My Mind, Innervisions, Songs in the Key of Life, Hotter than July and Stevie Wonder’s Original Musiquarium. The albums and others which followed, were instant classics and provided a compendium of hit singles. These included Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours, Superstition, You are the Sunshine of My Life, I Wish, Sir Duke, Happy Birthday, Ebony and Ivory, Ribbon In the Sky, I just Called to Say I love You and Part-Time Lover.

After being recognized as one of the most important artists and icons of our time, Wonder continues to tour the world and make new music. Recently, Wonder announced plans for a brief summer tour, with dates in June and July. The tour is scheduled to see Wonder performing in New York, Wisconsin, Illinois and British Columbia.

Stevie Wonder Tour Dates:

June 18, 2008 – Babylon, NY – Jones Beach Theatre

June 26, 2008 – Milwaukee, WI – Marcus Amphitheater

June 28, 2008 – Chicago, IL – Grant Park

July 12, 2008 – Vancouver, BC – General Motors Place

Levi advert music?

I would like to find out the music to a levi advert shown in the uk around 12 years ago. it was an ad where a red indian was driving a truck on some dark dusty road and if i remember correctly another indian was inside a wood cabin and washing his face from a bowl as the truck pulls up. I think the song had the lyric of 'I am the passenger" but it was not Iggy Pop, I know this is vague, but it has been bugging me. I know the ad came out just before the space cowboy and boombastic ads. please help.....

It was Siouxsie and the Banshees.
It was a minor hit for them in 1987.

The widespread of rock and punk songs across the world is not as rapid as pop genre but they're truly controversially known as widely listened by funky and wacky teenagers and liberated crowds. You may have heard of groups called Fallout Boy and Metallica. They're just two of the many contemporary rock artists and bands that pave way for liberation and loudness in terms of music. The earlier bands to be known are Sex Pistols and the Scientists. Following a proto-punk genre in the late 1960's, the punk rock music history kicked off when Ramones Band led the way in said genre.

Rebellion, liberation and victory are the usual themes of punk and rock tunes. Back in the 70's, punk rock music history revealed that the masses never really appreciated the roughness of instrumentals and politically controversial approach of punk rock. In the United Kingdom, early punk bands failed to win the hearts of song fanatics. They didn't establish mainstream success quite easily not until the late 90's due to the emergence of alternative rock tunes. Delusions, depressions and harsh revelations are reflected in the lyrics of punk rock, which is why only certain groups of individuals could adhere to this line of sounds.

As accounted in punk rock music history, the commencements of liberated songs were frequently debated between fanatics of ballads and lovers of alternative rock. There have been varying opinions about punk rock. Some say that they are garage tunes, which actually started when the band called Sonics played without defined musicals, no instrumental standards and lack of music rules. More bands like MC5, Velvet Underground and Stooges made their debut in the late 1960's, and they created a more controversial and vulgar image for the punk rock genre. New York Dolls and David and Bowie delivered influential inspirations of rock and roll that's largely outrageous and far different from the approach that Elvis Presley established long before they launched their music.

At the beginning of 1990's, there surfaced to be a punk revival of a few bands that didn't quite had a good start 30 decades back. The format of punk rock music is usually straightforward and realistic depicting crime issues, government agenda, social ills and other societal struggles. In punk rock music history, Iggy Pop was deemed to be the godfather of punk music. It was apparent that revolutionary scene of music in the 1970's paved way to the distinctiveness of fashion and music style of rockers and punk artists which have their certain niche of followers. Such certain punk look is exemplified in leather jeans and jackets, darkened eyelids, long polished nails and sporty get-up has remained to be apparent among famous punk artists of today's generation.

Watching Music Videos Online

Ever get tired of searching for a REAL music video on youtube? I'm sure you have all had the same experiences - you type in the sing title, let's say "Protege Moi" by "Placebo", only to find the top 20 results are all some kind of advertising, home make video or even another lame rick-rolled video.

That is why I was ecstatic to find http://www.lividcast.com. Now I can find the videos I am looking for with one easy search. I also really like the "lights off" feature which dims the rest of your screen and helps you focus on the video you are watching.

I also discovered a new band, "JULIEN-K" on lividcast. Check out their video for a song called "Kick The Bass". I enjoy the ability to discover new music on my own terms and not be force-fed new music.

The art of creative music videos seems to be lost. I remember all the great videos that came out in the 80's and early 90's! It seems every artist was trying to out do the others and an incredible amount of time and money went into creating these works of art. Each video made by Michael Jackson took us into a world of pure fantasy.

I have noticed many Record Companies are now having music videos removed from the internet. They mention copyright issues as the reason why. I was under the impression that these music videos were made as promotion to help sell more compact discs. I thought they wanted these videos to be spread as much as possible in order to garner more attention for the artists. I remember hearing of payola in the music business - payola being paying radio stations money in exchange fro song plays. Music videos should be seen as a commercial for the artist and their product and not something that fans should have to buy as a download or have limited access to.

In this information age I think the music video has become an under-utilized tool. I understand the dire financial situation that many artists find themselves in but I also think they are strayed from the blueprint that has worked for so many years. Give the fans an over the top visual presentation and they will gaitate towards those artists. Why not produce a fantastic music video and have a 30 second commercial lead-in? They need to find news ways to generate income while delivering a product that will grab attention.

I encourage all of you to head over to http://www.lividcast.com and spend a few minutes watching music videos you may have never seen before, discover some new artists and bands and even watch videos that you loved growing up. It's great to see some of the hair styles and fashion styles from years gone by. It's funny to think back and remember the days when we found those styles so cool!
