10 Ways to Make Your Blog Stick Out

According to the Blog Herald there are currently around 200 million blogs worldwide! That is an extreme amount of blogs. Now, it is said that around 72 million of those blogs are in China. So a good portion aren't even in the English niche. Let's just say another 50 million blogs are also in other languages, so that leaves around 80 million blogs to compete against! Not that every single blog out there is in competition, but it is sure nice, if you are looking to create traffic to your site, to stand out in a sea of blogs. So I have compiled a list of 10 things you can do to make your blog stand out a little more than the next. These tips are not in order of importance!

  1. Create a favicon for your blog. In a "Blog List" or a "Bookmark" your blog will stand out with it's own "logo." I don't know about all of you, but the first thing I look at when I go to a website are the pictures. One of the first pictures to be shown is the Favicon. Any logo is better than the blank page that will show or the common blogger icon. For example, take a look at the Favicon for BloggingisSimple.com. I just took the "B" right from my header image. This will also show up in bookmarks, RSS feeds, several gadgets and widgets by Blogger, etc.
  2. Meta Tags are vital for search engines as well as for browsing tabs. This will let people know what they are looking at. This is the Title of your blog! I am by far an expert in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) but do know a little. If you have a self-hosted Wordpress Blog, you can install widgets that will do all the tagging for you. However, some will recommend that you do this without the widget. So choose for yourself which will work best for your blog. One of the benefits of using a platform like Blogger, is that they are already ranking in the search engines, thus, your blog will also if you allow it to. There is an option in the blogger setup that allows you to choose whether or not you want your blog shown in the search engine listings. I have seen blogs show up in the search engines for my name in a matter of few weeks.
  3. Add character to your blog with a personalized background. This is useful with blogs hosted by Blogger, Wordpress.com, or hosted platforms. Since everyone is using the same templates, stick out like a sore thumb by customizing your background with either a picture, or an actual template. Just type ‘Blogger Templates' or ‘Blogger Backgrounds' in the search bar and explore your options.
  4. Add a custom header to your blog. Now, when I say custom, I don't mean just putting a picture of you and yours in there. If that is all you've got, then it is better than nothing. When I mean custom, I mean getting one made with a border, images, your names, the title of your blog, and so on. Make it original. Make it nice and professional. That is one of the first things your readers will look at. If would like us to create one for you, fill out the "Contact Us" form of this site.
  5. Photos speak a million words! In the words of my wife, "When I get to a site, the first thing I do is scroll down the page and look at all the pictures. If I like the pictures, then I'll go back to the top and start reading!" One cool thing you can do is add a slide show to your blog. Blogger has a gadget that can do this for you or you can create your own through Picasa or Flickr and embed it on your blog.
  6. Music can spice up your site or bring it down! If you doing a site for business purposes, having music will decline your traffic and kill your content, unless your content is about music. If you have a blog that is for personal use, your friends and family will enjoy some tunes as they check our your stuff. I have embedded music with Playlist.com before but there are many different music players you can use.
  7. Have Catchy Post Titles! Make sure your post titles reflect what you have in the content of your post. They must be relevant to each other. The next thing that people look at after the pictures are the post titles. Have the main point of your post in the title and make it exciting, short and to the point! For example: "10 ways to make your blog stand out" works better than "A couple of ways to make your blog stand out."
  8. Adding video to your Blog will always spice things up a bit. It seems that people are turning away from reading to just listening and watching. So use that web cam that came with your computer or go get one. Just a few pointers with a video: Make sure you have good lighting, people will be able to hear and understand your message, and make it short. Don't draw out a video, usually 1-2 minutes is plenty long. You might even go as far as using a simple movie maker software such as Windows Movie Maker to edit your video a little. If you do this, make sure to include your name in there and end it with your blogs URL. The last thing your visitors see will stick! You can then upload your video to YouTube, Google Video, or even Blogger and embed that on your blog.
  9. Always have interesting, useful, and relevant content. I once heard that you can insult, make fun of, criticize, compliment, or tongue bathe your readers, but by all means, DO NOT BORE THEM! Get a little personal with your readers without giving out your social security number, bank accounts and home address. The more you blog the better your writing skills will get.
  10. Interact with your readers. Relate, give advice, ask advice, and interact. This will do a number of things for your blog, but the most important, it will bring return visits and loyal readers who feel they have somewhat of an ownership in your blog. That is the best thing that can happen. They in turn will recommend your blog, because they have contributed. Leave comments on other blogs, especially of those who have left comments on yours. Answer emails and comments as often as you can and Do What You Say You Are Going To Do! Meaning, if you say you are going to write a post on a certain subject, do it!

So there you have it. Integrate and follow these tips and you will not only increase your traffic, but you will gain loyalty by having readers who leave your blog fulfilled!

Choosing and Booking Live Music for a Party

We're experts at finding the right band or DJ for any party, so we've written this article to guide you through the process of choosing and booking live music: we'll help you choose the right style, played by the right musicians, at the right price.

It can be quite a challenge to choose and book live music for a party: the music scene is more diverse than it has ever been before and offers a huge variety of styles; party venues come in all shapes and sizes and guests often have different tastes, with some wanting to dance and others preferring to mingle - and all this is before you even consider the budget!

The right style of music

Booking a band will make your event stand out from the rest because of the special atmosphere that live music creates, but the style to choose will depend on what you want the band to do. Do you want a loud, exciting band who will fill the dance floor and get everyone singing along? Or would you prefer your party music to add a sophisticated atmosphere that won't interrupt conversation. bands for parties are available in every format: we supply everything from full carnival bands complete with limbo dancers to covers bands playing chart hits to acoustic duos and solo harpists.

If you have a wide range of guests and want to get them all dancing and singing along, book a covers band. These party bands tend to have extensive repertoires - including everything from Buddy Holly to Gnarls Barkley - and will have something for everybody. Most will be happy to learn a special song for you, and many include soul and funk (such as James Brown and Aretha Franklin) as well as chart pop and rock.

If you're particularly keen on strutting your funky stuff, choose a specialist funk and soul band. These range from small and compact singers with backing tracks to big show bands with keyboards, horn sections and extra vocalists. They play funk and soul classics by artists such as the Jackson 5, Chic, and Kool and the Gang, adding modern Amy Winehouse and Jamiroquai. Some fit their set around a theme, focusing on 70s or 80s disco hits, and add costumes.

If you have a theme for your party, why not book live music to match? Tribute and novelty bands make great party entertainment, particularly when your guests are all roughly the same age and remember the era. Tribute bands can focus on a certain decade, or a specific artist - so you could hire an Abba tribute band for a 70s party or an Oasis tribute band for a 90s party.

For a similar level of entertainment, and something to suit guests of all ages, ceilidh bands can be a great choice. Your guests don't need to know the steps beforehand - most bands provide a caller, who will teach everyone the right moves. Ceilidh bands can also provide quieter moments, mixing shanties, ballads and folk songs to give tired feet a break!

A less traditional alternative for those keen on dancing is Latin, which is becoming increasingly popular at more colourful and exotic parties. It's popular with every audience, and the music ranges from well-known chart favourites by Ricky Martin and Miami Sound Machine to obscure standards to delight serious Latin fans. World music can be a wonderfully original addition to your entertainment - choose from options such as steel pan bands, flamenco and bluegrass - and will certainly give your guests something to talk about!

If your venue has a sound limiter, or the party is formal, a Rat Pack-style singer is great entertainment and will provide a sophisticated soundtrack. Swing makes a glamorous accompaniment to cocktail parties and won't break the bank, with many acts singing to backing tracks or able to modify their bands to suit your budget.

Jazz is equally cool and sophisticated, but comes in a much wider range of styles and formats, so might be a better option if you want both quiet moments and something to accompany dancing later on. Choose from a long list of standards, or ask the band to learn something special for your event. Once you have chosen your style, you need to work out which band you want to hire.

You can get to know more about a band by looking at the information they provide; most usually post a biography, photos, videos, samples of their playing and their repertoire online. Many will also provide testimonials from previous audiences, so you can see what other people thought! Covers bands usually aim to make their version of a song sound as much like the record as possible, though others specialise in creating new arrangements and medleys, or add acoustic options.

Many bands also offer a DJ service between sets so that the dancing doesn't have to stop, but this tends to be more limited than hiring a specialist DJ, who will carry far more music.

Choosing between a band and a DJ

Bands are a great addition to a party, giving your guests something to talk about long after the party has finished, and creating a special atmosphere, but sometimes the budget or practicalities can make it unrealistic to book a party band. A DJ can't give you quite the same entertainment value or spontaneity as a party band, but will mean you get a bigger choice of songs (many of our party DJs carry as many as 10,000 songs to each party) and that your audience can make requests on the night. Our party DJs can also compere your event and make announcements, and many create state-of-the-art light shows.

The right band for your party venue

Make sure you choose a band who make it easy for you to stay in touch and discuss your arrangements for the party - remember that you'll need to tell the band when to start and finish their set, let them know if you would like to hear certain songs, and possibly ask them to wear the right kind of clothes. A good party band will be used to accommodating the arrangements for events and will be able to work with you to make sure everything goes smoothly. They are usually self-contained, providing all the equipment they need, so that you don't need to hire anything - but it's always worth speaking to them beforehand and checking!

Party venues range from clubs and theatres that are designed for loud, live music to small rooms, restaurants and bars that require special arrangements. Many venues are now fitted with noise limiters and, although most party bands are used to working with these, it's best to make sure the band knows about the noise limiter beforehand, so that they can bring the right equipment.

There are party bands to fit all kinds of venues, so don't worry if your venue seems small or there are noise restrictions. Many bands can change their lineup, or play more quietly, so that they can fit in modest function rooms as well as large halls and venues designed for live music. Always tell your band or agent as much as you can about the venue when you book them (for example, size of the room/marquee, size of the performance area available, and noise limiters) so that they can organise the best possible show for you.

Ah... the 80s. Big hair and all, it's a decade we won't forget. Celebrate the punk 80s with a theme party sure to please all your guests. Here are a few ideas to help you get started.

Invitations

You can also create your own invitations by drawing 80's themes such as sunglasses, punk styles, leg warmers, mezpahs, etc.

Costumes/Dress Attire

Give each guest a pair of sunglasses to remember the old Corey Hartt song, "I wear my sunglasses at night."

For a disco or punk 80's style nightlife effect, add plenty of glow products.

Wear jelly bracelets and punk wigs for a great 80's theme.

Games & Activities

An easy choice of games is to play a game of 80's trivia. There are several available including Trivial Pursuit 80's edition.

Jeopardy became a big hit in the 80's, and can be a fun trivia game.

Play clips from 80's TV shows or movies and competing teams guess first what movie/show the song was from.

80's karaoke is lots of fun and gets everyone laughing.

Popular drinks for an 80's theme are Corona beer and wine coolers. Be sure to have soda on hand for the non-alcoholic set as well as water for all.

Complete the evening with break dancing and Rubik's cube contests!

R&B Soul Music Legends

Some say that the only difference between the rhythm and blues (R&B) and gospel is with gospel you sing "Oh Lord," while with Rhythm and Blues soul music you sing "Oh Baby."  Gospel music was the root beginnings of soul music however it is not merely the root that make R&B what it is today.

R& B soul music came to life as its own genre during the 50's.  While its origins may have began around the northern cities of America like Chicago it wasn't long before other cities followed suit like Memphis, Detroit, New York, Florence, and Philadelphia.

Many artists throughout the years helped develop what is known as R&B soul music such as artist like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Barry White, Luther Vandrose, James Brown, and Issac Hayes to mention just a few.

Soul music origin's came from the influence of gospel music and the more traditional R&B sounds.  The R&B soul sound of Memphis was more influenced by the gospel mix in cities like Memphis, than was the rhythm and blues soul of Detroit, which came up to become the smooth, polished sounds of Motown by artist such as Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, and Marvin Gaye.

If were to have to pick the top ten all time best R&B Soul artists one would be hard pressed to limit the list to ten.  You could take into consideration the artists contributions to the music industry, however, most R&B artists have contributed in one fashion or another.

Early top soul artists would have to include Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, and Elvis. Then as soul music took on a bit more groove to it and became known more by Motown/Soul in the late 60's and 70's you would have to add artists names such as Nina Simone, Jackie Wilson, Etta James, Ray Charles, Little Richard, and James Brown.

However, that leaves out a lot of influential R&B soul artists that have contributed so much to the still existing sound of rare soul music found in may of the more current soundtracks of today's artists like Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Al Green, Gladys Knight, Chaka Kahn, Brian McKnight, Kenny G, and R. Kelly.  The list could go on forever, as I am sure many of you are aware.  That is not even mentioning the soul artist groups that helped to keep the love alive.  There is something about some good old rare soul music that will never leave you, and always have you wanting more.

The poetic breath is like a string on a guitar,

Not too tight, nor too loose;

New day, real birth, lives shared, love displayed

Diving into poetry is like awakening dormant wisdom;

Laziness cripples the mind as always

The true joy of poetry

Is like a bee drinking nectar from a flower.

On the other hand:

Ignorance is displayed by

Ignorant people; no love shown,

No peace or joy in their hearts-Blab!

People with no conscience messing up the world daily

Smile from upside down-needing a shave!

Rich, poor, middle class, enjoying life in different ways

Rushing while shaving at midnight

Cut nose, now they think

Having nose bleed

Stuffing cotton swabs changing color.

This is like politicians always assuming things

Then getting the wrong answer-who me?

They always still think they are right;

Like music for the soul give me rock

Why not the entire genre?

They are like funk, man-Funk!

Play jazz sometimes also

It good for the soul!

Believe me; I still think that life would be so precious

If independence and dependence

Would become interdependence

Working together as one

Like a sweet smelling rose

Love unfurls on Valentine's Day

Such sweet fragrance is illuminating

To the mind, body and soul of loved ones.

This is rather interesting to some

Just looking around we see

Philosophers who are philosophizing

Arguing about a tree falling in the woods

I just can't believe it-I am blind, deaf

They should come and help me

Find my pet boa snake

He escaped in the airplane from my case

I hope he is safe and come how soon for a meal

Dragging his tail, still curled!

Poetry always awakens the mind

Just like a beautiful leaf, or a rose

Hangs from the crack in a rock

Over a steep cliff

It awaits the moment to be discovered

Such sweet essence

Namaste!

MUSIC INDUSTRY: Jazz Still a Passing Fad
Jazz musicians improvise for a living. In L.A., as in the rest of the country, where fewer and fewer arts patrons seek jazz as a music of first choice, players improvise ways to find work. Michael Perlowin Presents Unique-sounding Classical Music Inspired by Spain

Michael Perlowin breaks new ground with innovative and enjoyable music performed primarily and surprisingly on the pedal steel guitar.

As with his forays into the world of Debussy, Stravinsky and Broadway with his Firebird Suite and West Side Story albums, Michael Perlowin is again shattering the stereotype of the pedal steel guitar as a country-and-western-only instrument. In his new album, Spanish Steel, he presents 20 tracks from or about Spain, featuring works by Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz, Joaquín Rodrigo, Julio Martinez Oyanguren, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

This new album sees Perlowin continuing to alternate between the use of the pedal steel as both a featured and ensemble instrument. However, this CD features Perlowin’s guitar work more than his previous outings, as the guitar is such an integral part of Spanish music. It is fair to say that this is not so much a "pedal steel guitar album" as it is an album of music in which the steel is predominantly featured for its unique expressive sound.

Perlowin, a veteran guitarist of the folk and rock music scene around L.A., became enamored of the pedal steel guitar after unexpectedly finding himself working on a country and western band during the mid-70s. His infatuation blossomed into an all-consuming love affair, an intensely passionate obsession that continues to this day. Perlowin jokingly calls himself a "steel-aholic," and adds that the intricacies and mysteries of the instrument cause most other players to feel the same way.

As a working guitarist, Perlowin had played just about every type of popular music, from standards, to folk, rock, country, blues, reggae and even disco. Playing pedal steel guitar, however, Perlowin found he was unhappy when confined to country and western music. He began playing the steel with musicians from various genres, including an all instrumental experimental music band, and a blues rock band ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkSnoeTWR4I ).

Eventually, it was the world of classical music that attracted Perlowin’s interest. A recording of Debussy’s "The Maid With the Flaxen Hair" by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith introduced him to the world of literate music. Perlowin explains, "As soon as I heard this piece, I realized that this was what I wanted to play." Perlowin’s own recording of the piece, which clearly shows Smith’s influence, can be heard on his first classical pedal steel album Firebird Suite.

"Everyone who plays classical music should be required to listen to this recording," said Mark Laycock, Music Director, Orchestra London, The Princeton Chamber Symphony and Guest Conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra and Indianapolis Symphony. "Mike Perlowin is a musical genius who I am proud to know and learn from, and honored to have for a friend. I love this instrument, and this music and the beauty of these sounds delights my soul."

Perlowin had been marginally exposed to classical music when he was young, and has no formal musical or production training. Perlowin’s second album, West Side Story, shows his growth not as a player, since he had already mastered the instrument, but as a producer, arranger, and recording engineer.

However, it is with this third album that his mastery of the recording studio blossomed to match his talents as a virtuoso musician. On Spanish Steel, Dave Beyer played drums and percussion, while Bill Watkins contributed timpani samples to complement Perlowin on pedal and lap steel guitars, electric and acoustic guitars, fretted and fretless basses, sitar, mandolin, mandocello, 5-string banjo, autoharp and additional percussion.

Spanish Steel is a totally unique and original album fulfilling Perlowin’s goal of showing the beauty and expressiveness of the pedal steel guitar. Replete with fascinating liner notes, it is the best example to date of the depths of Perlowin’s enormous talent. Find it along with his other albums at CDBaby.com, SteelGuitarMusic.com, Amazon.com; for reviews and images visit his artist website at http://www.mikeperlowin.com

Prince Rogers Nelson was born on June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. When he grew up, he would become a well-known singer, song writer, record producer and an actor. His career started in the 1970s and he is still going strong today. Throughout his career, Prince has dabbled in a few different music genres, including rock, rhythm and blues, funk and pop and has always taken control of his own music. In fact, he has been known as a perfectionist where his music is concerned, which is probably why he has composed, produced and performed almost all of his music. Prince would also become known as an artist who was extremely protective over his own music. His need to control the music he created as well as how protective he was over it would cause him trouble in the future, but nothing serious enough to end his musical career.

Prince's parents went their separate ways when he was fairly young. He did not have a very good relationship with his step father and ran away. He then went to stay with his biological father for a while and it was then that he was given his first guitar. From that point on he practiced and experimented with music until he began his musical career in the mid 1970s. His cousin's husband, Pepe Willie was a great help to Prince and the start of his musical career. With this help and his determination, Prince went on to release his first album in April of 1978. This album would be the first of many more albums he would release later in his career.

Prince has always been extremely protective of his work, almost to a fault. He even went so far as to change his name to the title of a symbol in the early 1990s when he got into a dispute with the label he was under at the time. He didn't feel that they were allowing him to fully express himself and experiment with his music. It was the first step he took in order to get out of the contracts he was in, though he would return to his original name later on. He also got into a dispute with YouTube and eBay who were releasing his work without payment or proper authorization, which resulted in copyright infringement.

Prince has had many relationships, but it appears that his love is for his music. His music is what he puts his energy into and this could be a good reason why he is so protective of his work. It is probably why he had a difficult time remaining in contracts under other labels that he felt got in the way of his music. Music is an artistic expression and one cannot blame Prince for wanting to be able to express himself through his music, without the limitations on what he was allowed to do when under contract. Despite this, he would continue his musical career and would win numerous awards, including a few Grammy Awards. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
