Pickwicks Pub is the Local Hotspot in Woodland Hills

Pickwicks first opened its doors to the public in 1974 and it has been a San Fernando Valley landmark ever since.  The Pub has changed hands a few times but is now back in the hands of previous ownership that brought it to its peak.  Due to a tragic fire in 2005, the pub was unfourtunatley burned to the ground and had to close its door for the first time in 30 years.  The land owners and previous pub owners took back the decimated landmark and started the long process of rebuilding.  Craig and Lizz Holman, along with their children Robert, Kim, and Chris, spent countless hours doing the physical labor needed to bring this once iconic bar back to its previous glory.  Thanks to their efforts, the Pub reopened in March of 2006 just in time for St. Patty's Day and a great grand opening celebration.  I'm happy to say the pub has now been open for over 2 years and continues to thrive, attracting new customers of all ages with its great selection of beer and alcohol, traditional British grub, and ever changing entertainers.

 http://www.pickwickspub.org

Pickwicks has long been renowned for their British food and I for one will agree with most critics, that they have one of the best fish and chips plates in the greater Los Angeles area.  The establishment is listed under nightlife and Pub/Bar on most sites or search engines,  but they should also be listed under restaurant as they have a full menu that leaves your mouth watering for more.  They have traditional British Grub, such as Bangers and Mash, Scotch Pie and Chips, and of course Beer Battered Fish and Chips.  They also have a wide variety of sandwiches and salads, including a seared ahi tuna salad that customers say is better than most sushi restaurants.  I for one love the Indian curries, especially the creamy Chicken Tikka.  Quite oddly, you can also find traditional Hawaiian Food on some weekends, including such items as Kalua Pork, Huli Huli Chicken, and Ahi Poke.  I was inquisitive as to why a British Pub would be serving such items and I was told that the owners son had spent a portion of his military career serving in Hawaii and brought back with him the recipes that the locals had taught him.  Regardless of the story though, the food is amazing and makes you feel like you made a quick trip to the islands.  Ive heard rumors that the son Robert, will be starting a Hawaiian luau type catering company soon, but that will be another article.

http://www.pickwickspub.org

Besides having fabulous food, the pub also has a great selection of beverages to choose from to quench your thirst after a hard days work.  They have 14 beers on tap and a full bar along with 8 different bottled beers.  A couple of the taps change regularly as do the bottles.  They also have seasonal Samuel Adams on tap, and I cant wait for the Winter Lager to come out.  The service is impeccable and the staff is always friendly and willing to help you make a decision.  Sometimes at night it does get really busy and you may have to wait, but I promise they will get to you as quick as they can.  They also have great entertainment on multiple nights, including Trivia Night on Wednesday's, Bob Cowsill on Fridays, and a great 80's music guy named Galo on Saturdays.  If you've never tried trivia night before, I definitely recommend a visit.  It is tons of fun, and they offer prizes for winning.  How can you beat that?

Pickwicks Pub does have two happy hours which seems to make all the patrons happy.  They also serve all their beer and ale in 20oz pint glasses so you actually get more for your money.  Their happy hour is Mon-Sun from 11am-7pm and they also have a night happy hour that is Mon-Thurs from 10pm-12am and includes $1 off beer and liquor and $5 appetizer baskets.  The night happy hour is alone worth the visit as you can get a great basket of food and a 20oz beer for as low as $9.

You can locate Pickwicks Pub at

21010 Ventura Blvd, Woodland Hills CA 91364     (818)340-9673

Mysore Travel Guide

Mysore is the second biggest city in the State of Karnataka lying 130 kms from the State Headquarters, Bangalore. Mysore is said to have derived its name from this the demon-king, Mahishasura, who once lived here and was vanquished by Goddess Chamundi. It is a city of palaces, gardens, and sacred temples. The city is famous for its silk and is also a thriving sandalwood and incense centre.

This lovely city will cover you up under a spell of sandalwood as soon as you set foot in it. Besides that, it is also the paradise for incense lovers. Whatever sort of scent you're looking for, there is a vendor stall that’s sells it. What Varanasi is to the north of India when it comes to silk, Mysore is to the south. Several streets are lined with silk emporia where you can buy nice pieces of silk and then you can go to a tailor and let them have a go at it.

Places to See in Mysore:

Srirangapatnam

About 15 km from the royal city of Mysore lies the town of Srirangapatnam. There are many interesting places here of which the summer palace of Tipu Sultan is a must visit. Built in 1784 in the Indo-Saracenic style, the palace also has a small museum where Tipu's trivia, including a gold-embroidered tunic, old paintings and a coin collection, are displayed. A little away from the palace is the Gumbaz, the mausoleum of Tipu Sultan and his father, Hyder Ali. Another famous place to visit is Jami Masjid. The slender minarets of this mosque are visible from several kilometers.

Mysore Palace

The Mysore Palace was built over one thousand years ago, in 897 AD. Saracenic in style, the palace has both Hindu as well as Muslim influences. After a fire in 1897, Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV rebuilt the palace as we see it today, under the supervision of architect Henry Irwin. The main building is of massive gray granite with a tower covered by a gilded dome. A temple is situated within the royal courtyard.

Brindavan Garden

This garden is situated 19 km northwest of Mysore. The garden is open daily, but the fountain show is held only in spring. The main attraction is the 'dancing musical fountains'. The garden is fully illuminated during the night.

Chamundi Hill

The temple on the hill, which is 2000 years old, is dedicated to Durga Devi or goddess Chamundi (avatar of Parvathi, Shiva's consort) for celebrating her victory over the demon Mahishasura. From the top of hill you can have a panoramic view of Mysore. There is a giant statue of Mahishasura, the demon who was killed by the goddess Chamundi (Durga Devi) near the temple. Halfway up the hill an ornamented monolithic statue of the Nandi Bull can be found.

Government Silk Weaving Factory

The Maharaja of Mysore created this factory in 1932 to obtain the finest hand-loomed silks for himself and his royal family. Today the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation runs it. Here you can see craftsmen at work and also buy silk, fresh from the looms.

Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery

Shri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery was established in 1875 and has a rare collection of some beautiful paintings from the same era. The gallery is located in Jagmohan Palace and exhibits paintings by Raja Ravi Varma, Svetsolav Roerich and traditional paintings from Mysore.

Excursions of Mysore:

Somnathpur

Thirty-five kilometers east of Mysore lies Somnathpur, a town famous for the temple built by the Hoysala kings. The beautiful building of the Keshava temple built in 1268 is the major attraction here. The walls of this star-shaped temple are covered with sculptures in stone depicting various scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita and the life and times of the Hoysala Kings.

Belur

One of the three major Hoysala temples still in daily use today is the Channekeshava Temple of Belur. The construction of the temple, which took almost a century, was started in 1116 to commemorate the Hoysalas' victory over the Cholas. Enclosed in a paved compound, the temple complex includes a well and a bathing tank. It is believed that every major deity of the Hindu pantheon is represented in the temple.

Bandipur

On the way to Ooty, about 80 km off Mysore, is situated the Bandipur National Park. The park, spread over an area of 875 km, is a famous tiger reserve. Besides tiger, the other animals you can see here are the barking deer, tuskers, and bison.

Shopping Attractions:

The Mysore shopping highlights are sandalwood products, oil, and fine silk fabrics featuring the hand-woven silk sarees and garments along with rosewood and sandalwood handicrafts, copperware, stoneware, brassware, wooden furniture, sandalwood powder, perfumes and lacquer ware. Sayaji Rao Road is the best market place of the town. However, during the festival season, wares from all over the country are available here.

How to get There:

By Air

The nearest airport is Bangalore that is a mere 140km away. All domestic airlines are operating flights to and from Bangalore to all major cities of the country. A few international flights to the Middle East are also operated from Bangalore.

By Rail

There are many train services operating between Bangalore and Mysore. The Shatabdi Express connects Mysore to Chennai. The ideal route to reach Mysore is via Bangalore.

By Road

State Highways connect Mysore to the national Highways and to all parts of the country. Bus services by Karnataka Road Transport Corporation and transport corporations of the neighboring states as well as private tour operators make it easy to reach the city without any difficulty. It is only a 3 hour journey from Bangalore.

rap music???

so i typed in rap music to see what some people would say about it. and of course they had nothing good to say. i will agree with you naggers, the content of wich they speak of is basically garbage. but for people like me, music lover, rap music is a very great form of music. so what if the rapper doesnt play the guitar or the drums, we got machines to do that for us. think about it. alot of geezers cant accpet the fact that there is skilled involved in rapping, and producing a good quality rap song. they know not of the matter they speak of. yet they judge. honestly i would say that they are just hating on the rappers for bieng wealthy, wich honestly alot of them are, they might not as be as wealthy as they might protrait, but they are, you wanna know why? because your grand kids love theire music. hip hop is a more then music, its a lifestyle. look at alot of other musicians and all there drug abuses. disco is dead, 60's soul didnt survive, and the 80's dance didnt stand a chance,

well I respect all musicians because there is no way the normal person could easily pile up hit after hit like some of these rap stars. personally i am a classic rock fan, however i have a deep respect for the rap stars out there who try their hardest to put out their best efforts to cd.

Back in the 1980s, a new type of musical tool was implemented in music and it helped to define the New Wave sound. This was the synthesizer and it was used in nearly every type of pop and rock music for the entire decade. It proved so popular that 20 years later, we can still pin point '80s music' based on the synthesizer sound.

However, by the time Grunge came along in 1992 and wiped the landscape of rock clean, the synthesizer fell out of fashion and so did buying synthesizers. Now, like so many times in the past, what was once lame is cool again, and people are starting to hear synthesizers in music again, especially in new bands like The Killers, who have used it in some of their songs.

As a result, you may find your children asking for a synthesizer for their birthday or Christmas and unless you want to spend a lot of money on a new one, only to find out they don't enjoy practicing their music with it, you are going to have to look at buying a used one.

When you buy a used synthesizer, you are buying something that you can resell if you have to, which means that you won't be spending hundreds of dollars on something your child will stop using, forcing you to sell it for much less. Instead you will be spending $50 to $100 on something your child may or may not use, then you can sell it for $75 to $125, meaning it is feasible that you could attain a profit off of it. That is a good scenario to be in.

If your child does take to the synthesizer, then you can spend more money to buy them something that is a bit better and a bit newer. At that point, you will know that they are into something like a synthesizer, and you don't have to worry they will get bored of it over a certain period of time.

Synthesizers used to be a staple of music in the 1980s, but through out the 1990s, they were not used that much and they became a dime a dozen. However, not that retro is cool, 1980s synthesizer music has become popular and that means that young musicians are going to want to emulate their favourite artists and get the synthesizers that they use.

Instead of buying a new one, you can buy a used one and nurture their budding musical gift that way, without having to spend a lot of money on it. You can find a synthesizer at various places, including pawn shops, or you can go onto online stores like eBay and buy what you need there. This is the best thing you can do for your children, because not nurturing their gift can lead to problems later, so buy the used synthesizers and make it happen for them. All it takes is a few bucks and a drive to find the deal you are looking for at the pawn shop or online.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant for used CDs, autographed CDs, and used musical instruments. You can find the best marketplace for used CDs, autographed CDs, and used musical instruments at these sites for used pop CDs, autographed pop CDs, and used pop musical instruments.

Record-Breaking West End Sales Confirm London Musicals More Popular Than Ever!

London's West End and theatre district continues to perform well against a backdrop of economic uncertainty. Figures show that ticket sales for London musicals have risen for the seventh consecutive year, boosted by star casts and top shows. London musicals continue to attract both audiences and awards, and a packed programme of events to encourage new theatregoers looks set to help continue the trend.

Ticket sales to West End shows topped 500,000,000 in 2009, making it a record-breaking year for London theatre. With ticket sales up 7.6 percent on figures for the previous year, attendance to plays, musicals, opera and dance at London's West End theatres was also up, by 5.5 percent, during the same period.

Record Year for West End Theatre Tickets

This was the seventh year in a row that new theatre attendance and revenue records were set in London's West End. Out of all types of entertainment, London musicals by far drew in the largest crowds, with plays the second most popular.

A recent study by the Society of London Theatre suggested that high audience satisfaction may be a key driver behind the success of these sales figures. The report revealed:

* 93 percent of London theatre audiences were happy with the performance they attended, with 75 percent rating it as 'very good'

* 83 percent thought their ticket represented good value for money

* 80 percent of London theatre-goers saw a West End performance more than once a year

West End Stars Shine in London Theatre Awards

The winners of the 2012 Laurence Olivier Awards were recently announced in a glittering, star-studded ceremony, which was broadcast live on BBC Radio 2. The awards, which are now in their 34th year, are voted for by the public and a professional panel to reward excellence on the London stage.

For the first time since 2002 the Audience Award for Most Popular Show, which is the only category voted entirely for by the public, was reintroduced. Over 60,000 votes were cast for this category alone, with the hit musical Wicked topping the list.

Other winners on the night included:

* Best Actress - Rachel Weisz for A Streetcar Named Desire

* Best Actor - Mark Rylance for Jerusalem

* Best New Musical - Spring Awakening

* Best Costume Design - Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert The Musical

West End London Musicals Involved in Exciting Annual Events

Although figures show that there are large numbers of returning audiences to London musicals in the West End, there is also a strong emphasis on encouraging new theatre-goers. A number of initiatives and special events are planned throughout the year to make theatre tickets more affordable and performances more fun.

Get into London Theatre takes place during the first three months of the year, with discounted tickets to over 55 top London shows and a programme of workshops. It's a fantastic opportunity to book cheap tickets to some of the best London musicals. This year's event was a huge success, with more than 65,000 theatre tickets sold.

Children can experience the magic of London theatre for free during Kids Week. Now in its 13th year, Kids Week will take place from 13- 27 August 2010. As well as free tickets for children aged 5-16, there are a fantastic range of free activities and events, from behind the scenes tours to puppet workshops.

See the world's largest free theatre festival in London's Leicester Square on 19-20 June at West End LIVE 2010. Full details of the event are yet to be announced but you can expect to see great performances from London's most popular musicals.

If you are into video games, you have probably heard the name Guitar Hero thrown around a few times. Guitar Hero is a popular music game franchise which allows the player to act like a real rock star. Hitting notes, playing songs, encores...it really simulates the band experience. And now with Guitar Hero: World Tour, you can even be a drum hero or a mic hero! (Of course, these features were already available in the earlier released Rock Band, one of Guitar Hero's prime competitors). The franchise has since made the jump to mobile phones, minus one in particular. The iPhone: the phone that took the world by storm.

Some people might be asking, "Why not on the iPhone?." True, it is one of the most innovative phones of its time. But why not? The iPhone shares a wide variety of games with its non-cellular cousin, the iPod touch, through the App Store. Many other popular game franchises have made their way to the iPhone, such as The Sims, Need for Speed, Assassin's Creed, Brothers In Arms, and Resident Evil. Guitar Hero: iPhone Edition, however, might not be the best choice business-wise. The App Store already has its share of GH copies, the most popular of which being the Tap Tap series. The main game now, Tap Tap Revenge 2, is a FREE app and the original, which was once free but no longer is, was the top downloaded free app of 2008. There are also premium (paid) Tap Tap games, which are usually focused on a single artist. Some examples include Coldplay, The Dave Matthews Band, and Lady Gaga.

Now let's compare:

As of now, Guitar Hero as 4 main games and 4 "expansion games", which center around either a group of music (Smash Hits, Rock the 80's) or a specific band (Aerosmith, Metallica). There are also portable games for mobile phones and the Nintendo DS.

As of now, there are 2 main Tap Tap games (1 is paid for), and 6 premium games, which are usually artist specific (Lady Gaga, Nine Inch Nails, Coldplay, ect.)

Comment on this post. Do YOU think that Guitar Hero would have a chance on the iPhone?

Learn The Types Of Ballroom Dancing

So you want to learn ballroom dancing. You know that being a good professional dancer, you can earn a good income and may even one day become a celebrity.

Dancing well can have many other benefits too. Do you know that dancing can give you good poise and lends you an air of elegance? Dancing can even correct your bad posture and make you look taller, strengthens your cardiovascular health, tone your muscles, improve your flexibility and yes, even losing weight! If your lover is your dance partner, you can even strengthen your bonding and love.

There are many dance styles you can choose to learn, however, the most elegant type of dancing is ballroom dancing. Ballroom dancing has many genre and these include the cha cha, the jive, rhumba, foxtrot, samba, waltz, tango and salsa just to name a few.

There are many ballroom dancing forms and I will briefly describe some of the more popular ones here.

Ballroom dancing is considered a formal and elegant form of social dancing. The word "ball" is derived from the Latin word "ballare" which simply means dance. Ballroom dancing is usually performed by a couple where usually the male dancer leads and the female dancer follows the steps.

There are two main styles of ballroom dancing which are the international style and the American style. The Rumba, Mambo, Cha Cha, Waltz, Foxtrot and Salsa dances are some of the most popular types of ballroom dancing enjoyed being enjoyed all over the world..

Salsa is a dance for Salsa music created by the Spanish speaking people from the Caribbean. Salsa dancing is a fine elegant mixture of African and European dance influences through the music and dance fusions that are the roots of Salsa. Salsa dancing is closely related to "dirty dancing".

Salsa is usually a couple partner dance although there are also solo forms, line dancing (suelta), and Rueda de Casino where groups of couples exchange partners in a circle. The Salsa dance can also be improvised or performed with a set routine.

The Rumba style of ballroom dancing is sometimes known as the Latin Waltz. The American Rumba is a variation of a slow rhythmed Cuban dance called the "Son" that was brought to the United States in the 1920s. The Rumba is danced on the spot, rather than all over the dance floor, with hip and other body movements in a slow, quick, quick beat.

The Modern Waltz style of ballroom dancing comes from the Austria Waltzen styles of ballroom dancing popular in Austria and Germany in the early 1900s. The Boston Waltz became popular in the United States in 1834 and is a slower version of the Viennese Waltz. Today, the Waltz still remains as a slow type of ballroom dancing and the slower tempo has allowed the Waltz to have more figures, dips and steps added to it.

The Foxtrot is a form of ballroom dancing chereographed by Harry Fox in 1914 in New York City. The Foxtrot involves moving the back leg in a smooth action, although there are many versionss of the Foxtrot. The original Foxtrot was faster and not as smooth and stylish as some of the variations danced today. However, the faster Foxtrot style of ballroom dancing is still taught in many modern ballroom dancing studios and danced in many modern ballrooms.

The Cha Cha was originally called the Cha Cha Cha because its main tempo movement is based on a triple step. The Cha Cha style of ballroom dancing originated in the Cuban Mambo and became popular in the United States in the 1950s. The Cha Cha triple step is danced in between two rock beat movements. This dance form is perhaps the most popular ballroom dance style in the world.

The early tango was known as tango criollo. Today, there are many tango dance styles, including Argentine Tango, Uruguayan Tango, Ballroom tango, American and International tango styles, Finnish tango and vintage tangos. What many tango dancers consider to be the authentic tango is that closest to that originally danced in Argentina and Uruguay athough other forms of tango have developed into more mature dances in their own right.

The Jive is a dance style in 4/4 tempo that was originated in the United States from African-Americans in the early 1940s. It is a lively and uninhibited variation of the Jitterbug, a form of Swing dance.

Jive is one of the five International Latin dances. In competition it is danced at a speed of 44 bars per minute, although in other cases this is reduced to between 32 and 40 bars per minute. Many of the jive's basic patterns are similar to these of the East Coast Swing with the major difference of highly syncopated rhythm of the Triple Steps (Chasses), which use straight eighths in ECS and hard swing in Jive. That is why the jive is closely related to lindy hop and jitterbug ballroom dance form.

If you want to learn any type of ballroom dancing, it is never too late to start with the ballroom dancing basics. You may think the dance steps are very complex, but they are actually easy. So if you are interested, you can actually learn it at home.

It is truly a wonderful sight to see couples take the stage and sway their bodies to a good ballroom music. Not only is dancing a fun activity for you but it is also a form of expression as well as a very good exercise and a way to interact with people. It is also a way to build self-confidence from the way you look on the dance floor, which can be used in other aspects of your life. If you are interested in learning how to dance, it is here are some ballroom dancing basics to take note.

Learning the terms

Whether you are into ballet or ballroom, you need to first start with familiarizing the dance, and good way to know is learning the terminologies and names of the steps. Although the dance does not require a special footwear like that of ballet, it will also help if you get a sturdy pair of shoes for your dancing to avoid injuries. Ballroom dances can be done in many styles but you can always take the simplest and most basic styles first before going to the more complex ones.

Posture

Maintaining a good posture is one of the most important things you should learn and master before you go into learning the basic dance steps. If you will notice, the good posture in ballroom dancing makes the dance fabulous and pleasing to the eyes. Having a good posture will also project self-confidence while you are dancing.

Dance hold

One important thing to learn in ballroom dances is moving and dancing with a partner. One of the ballroom dancing basics you need to learn is the basic dance hold. This is also important to master as the gracefulness and balance of your dance depend largely on doing the correct dance hold. To learn the details of the correct dance hold, video tutorials will help you learn it the correct way - from proper feet position to head and body position. Find a dance partner and practice and master this before starting any dance steps. It is also important to learn how to hold your partner during turns, which is an essential part in this type of dancing.

Timing

Since ballroom dancing is a dance for pairs, proper timing is also important. Women should not precede the man's leading when dancing. In learning the steps, learn to listen to ballroom music to get familiar with its beat and rhythm.

Footwork

Triple step, rock step, ball change, kick ball change - you will master ballroom dancing if you learn how to execute these steps one by one. In learning these steps, make sure that you are not just keeping in mind its correct execution but also keep in mind good posture, timing and other ballroom dancing basics.

When you eventually learn the ballroom dancing basics, you can then find a partner and start dancing! You can also enroll in dance classes so you can enjoy learning the dance.

Carolyn Anderson has great love for ballroom dancing and enjoys it during her free time. For videos that will teach you how to dance like a pro, check out Louis Let's Dance. Also check out Ballet Bible, for a comprehensive package if you are interested in ballet dancing for you or for your kids.

Milwaukee music strikes "The New Yorker" and "Vanity Fair"
Kings Go Forth played Austin's "South by Southwest" festival earlier this spring just before releasing "The Outsiders Are Back," the band's first LP on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. In the wake of these two showings plus a night at New York's Mercury Lounge, the 10 piece soul contingent is finally getting a taste of national hype well beyond the Midwestern region.
