Choosing and Booking Live Music for a Party

We're experts at finding the right band or DJ for any party, so we've written this article to guide you through the process of choosing and booking live music: we'll help you choose the right style, played by the right musicians, at the right price.

It can be quite a challenge to choose and book live music for a party: the music scene is more diverse than it has ever been before and offers a huge variety of styles; party venues come in all shapes and sizes and guests often have different tastes, with some wanting to dance and others preferring to mingle - and all this is before you even consider the budget!

The right style of music

Booking a band will make your event stand out from the rest because of the special atmosphere that live music creates, but the style to choose will depend on what you want the band to do. Do you want a loud, exciting band who will fill the dance floor and get everyone singing along? Or would you prefer your party music to add a sophisticated atmosphere that won't interrupt conversation. bands for parties are available in every format: we supply everything from full carnival bands complete with limbo dancers to covers bands playing chart hits to acoustic duos and solo harpists.

If you have a wide range of guests and want to get them all dancing and singing along, book a covers band. These party bands tend to have extensive repertoires - including everything from Buddy Holly to Gnarls Barkley - and will have something for everybody. Most will be happy to learn a special song for you, and many include soul and funk (such as James Brown and Aretha Franklin) as well as chart pop and rock.

If you're particularly keen on strutting your funky stuff, choose a specialist funk and soul band. These range from small and compact singers with backing tracks to big show bands with keyboards, horn sections and extra vocalists. They play funk and soul classics by artists such as the Jackson 5, Chic, and Kool and the Gang, adding modern Amy Winehouse and Jamiroquai. Some fit their set around a theme, focusing on 70s or 80s disco hits, and add costumes.

If you have a theme for your party, why not book live music to match? Tribute and novelty bands make great party entertainment, particularly when your guests are all roughly the same age and remember the era. Tribute bands can focus on a certain decade, or a specific artist - so you could hire an Abba tribute band for a 70s party or an Oasis tribute band for a 90s party.

For a similar level of entertainment, and something to suit guests of all ages, ceilidh bands can be a great choice. Your guests don't need to know the steps beforehand - most bands provide a caller, who will teach everyone the right moves. Ceilidh bands can also provide quieter moments, mixing shanties, ballads and folk songs to give tired feet a break!

A less traditional alternative for those keen on dancing is Latin, which is becoming increasingly popular at more colourful and exotic parties. It's popular with every audience, and the music ranges from well-known chart favourites by Ricky Martin and Miami Sound Machine to obscure standards to delight serious Latin fans. World music can be a wonderfully original addition to your entertainment - choose from options such as steel pan bands, flamenco and bluegrass - and will certainly give your guests something to talk about!

If your venue has a sound limiter, or the party is formal, a Rat Pack-style singer is great entertainment and will provide a sophisticated soundtrack. Swing makes a glamorous accompaniment to cocktail parties and won't break the bank, with many acts singing to backing tracks or able to modify their bands to suit your budget.

Jazz is equally cool and sophisticated, but comes in a much wider range of styles and formats, so might be a better option if you want both quiet moments and something to accompany dancing later on. Choose from a long list of standards, or ask the band to learn something special for your event. Once you have chosen your style, you need to work out which band you want to hire.

You can get to know more about a band by looking at the information they provide; most usually post a biography, photos, videos, samples of their playing and their repertoire online. Many will also provide testimonials from previous audiences, so you can see what other people thought! Covers bands usually aim to make their version of a song sound as much like the record as possible, though others specialise in creating new arrangements and medleys, or add acoustic options.

Many bands also offer a DJ service between sets so that the dancing doesn't have to stop, but this tends to be more limited than hiring a specialist DJ, who will carry far more music.

Choosing between a band and a DJ

Bands are a great addition to a party, giving your guests something to talk about long after the party has finished, and creating a special atmosphere, but sometimes the budget or practicalities can make it unrealistic to book a party band. A DJ can't give you quite the same entertainment value or spontaneity as a party band, but will mean you get a bigger choice of songs (many of our party DJs carry as many as 10,000 songs to each party) and that your audience can make requests on the night. Our party DJs can also compere your event and make announcements, and many create state-of-the-art light shows.

The right band for your party venue

Make sure you choose a band who make it easy for you to stay in touch and discuss your arrangements for the party - remember that you'll need to tell the band when to start and finish their set, let them know if you would like to hear certain songs, and possibly ask them to wear the right kind of clothes. A good party band will be used to accommodating the arrangements for events and will be able to work with you to make sure everything goes smoothly. They are usually self-contained, providing all the equipment they need, so that you don't need to hire anything - but it's always worth speaking to them beforehand and checking!

Party venues range from clubs and theatres that are designed for loud, live music to small rooms, restaurants and bars that require special arrangements. Many venues are now fitted with noise limiters and, although most party bands are used to working with these, it's best to make sure the band knows about the noise limiter beforehand, so that they can bring the right equipment.

There are party bands to fit all kinds of venues, so don't worry if your venue seems small or there are noise restrictions. Many bands can change their lineup, or play more quietly, so that they can fit in modest function rooms as well as large halls and venues designed for live music. Always tell your band or agent as much as you can about the venue when you book them (for example, size of the room/marquee, size of the performance area available, and noise limiters) so that they can organise the best possible show for you.

Ah... the 80s. Big hair and all, it's a decade we won't forget. Celebrate the punk 80s with a theme party sure to please all your guests. Here are a few ideas to help you get started.

Invitations

You can also create your own invitations by drawing 80's themes such as sunglasses, punk styles, leg warmers, mezpahs, etc.

Costumes/Dress Attire

Give each guest a pair of sunglasses to remember the old Corey Hartt song, "I wear my sunglasses at night."

For a disco or punk 80's style nightlife effect, add plenty of glow products.

Wear jelly bracelets and punk wigs for a great 80's theme.

Games & Activities

An easy choice of games is to play a game of 80's trivia. There are several available including Trivial Pursuit 80's edition.

Jeopardy became a big hit in the 80's, and can be a fun trivia game.

Play clips from 80's TV shows or movies and competing teams guess first what movie/show the song was from.

80's karaoke is lots of fun and gets everyone laughing.

Popular drinks for an 80's theme are Corona beer and wine coolers. Be sure to have soda on hand for the non-alcoholic set as well as water for all.

Complete the evening with break dancing and Rubik's cube contests!

About The Author Dee Schrock has put together hundreds of theme party tips and fun ideas for easy (and budget conscious!) party planning.

The Birth of New Wave Music

New Wave mania hit the scene in the United States in the mid to late l970's and moved on into the United Kingdom in the early 80's. It was a sound that took its origins from rock and pop music and was initially used interchangeably with punk rock before making a stand on its own. New Wave music brought together a variety of popular music sounds that included disco, electronic and experimental. Electronic elements including synthesizers were commonly used in the 80's New Wave sound.

It was an era when bands began to experiment with and incorporate electronic sounds into their compositions. The digital synthesizer and electronic keyboards were being made available commercially for the first time as a great deal of research was being conducted in academic arenas on the generation of sound. It opened a whole new world of possibility in music.

Switched on Bach and Cat Stevens incorporated the Moog Synthesizer into their music in the late 1960's but it wasn't until the 80's that it began to be used in a wide variety of pop music. Used by Pete Townshend, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Stevie Wonder, Frank Zappa and David Bowie the synthesizer made its presence known.

The Reintroduction of the Skinny Tie

The skinny necktie, that had made its first entrance into the United States in the 1950's and was worn by the likes of Elvis and The Beatles, made a comeback at the same time that New Wave music took the stage. These rockers seemed to be staging a protest against the wide, flashy era of the 70's in their style of dress, and saying less was better. Shorter hair styles, simpler dress and skinny neckwear began to come into popularity.

For women it was the era of Madonna and Cyndi Lauper who no longer wore the bell bottoms and the Farrah Fawcett hair style. New Wave meant anything from big hair and jean jackets to halter tops and spandex. Don Johnson brought with him the rough and unshaven look that still hangs on in today's fashion world. We can't forget Michael Jackson and Thriller in the 80's.

The Skinny Tie Returns

Skinny neckties are making a comeback once again. Today almost any style goes and you will see a little bit of everything. Fashion is used to make a statement as always, but now the voice is more a chorus than a soloist and it's almost impossible to look out of place. If you're a skinny tie person who still loves the New Wave music of the 80's, chances are you'll find a whole group of people who fell the same way that you do.

Style is about comfort and personal taste and preference now. It's all about loving a style and making it your own, whether it's punk, rock, new wave or something in-between. Vintage skinny neckwear is here. Make the most of it!

Jackie D. is the owner of Ties2Pillows, an online resource for Vintage Designer Neckties with the largest selection of Thin Narrow Neckties for sale on the web.

Ties are separated by era (1920's through today's), by style (wide, extra long, square end, knit, silk) and by pattern.

The site carries every novelty theme imaginable, including hard to find vintage unique novelty ties.

Michael Perlowin Presents Unique-sounding Classical Music Inspired by Spain

Michael Perlowin breaks new ground with innovative and enjoyable music performed primarily and surprisingly on the pedal steel guitar.

As with his forays into the world of Debussy, Stravinsky and Broadway with his Firebird Suite and West Side Story albums, Michael Perlowin is again shattering the stereotype of the pedal steel guitar as a country-and-western-only instrument. In his new album, Spanish Steel, he presents 20 tracks from or about Spain, featuring works by Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz, Joaquín Rodrigo, Julio Martinez Oyanguren, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

This new album sees Perlowin continuing to alternate between the use of the pedal steel as both a featured and ensemble instrument. However, this CD features Perlowin’s guitar work more than his previous outings, as the guitar is such an integral part of Spanish music. It is fair to say that this is not so much a "pedal steel guitar album" as it is an album of music in which the steel is predominantly featured for its unique expressive sound.

Perlowin, a veteran guitarist of the folk and rock music scene around L.A., became enamored of the pedal steel guitar after unexpectedly finding himself working on a country and western band during the mid-70s. His infatuation blossomed into an all-consuming love affair, an intensely passionate obsession that continues to this day. Perlowin jokingly calls himself a "steel-aholic," and adds that the intricacies and mysteries of the instrument cause most other players to feel the same way.

As a working guitarist, Perlowin had played just about every type of popular music, from standards, to folk, rock, country, blues, reggae and even disco. Playing pedal steel guitar, however, Perlowin found he was unhappy when confined to country and western music. He began playing the steel with musicians from various genres, including an all instrumental experimental music band, and a blues rock band ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkSnoeTWR4I ).

Eventually, it was the world of classical music that attracted Perlowin’s interest. A recording of Debussy’s "The Maid With the Flaxen Hair" by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith introduced him to the world of literate music. Perlowin explains, "As soon as I heard this piece, I realized that this was what I wanted to play." Perlowin’s own recording of the piece, which clearly shows Smith’s influence, can be heard on his first classical pedal steel album Firebird Suite.

"Everyone who plays classical music should be required to listen to this recording," said Mark Laycock, Music Director, Orchestra London, The Princeton Chamber Symphony and Guest Conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra and Indianapolis Symphony. "Mike Perlowin is a musical genius who I am proud to know and learn from, and honored to have for a friend. I love this instrument, and this music and the beauty of these sounds delights my soul."

Perlowin had been marginally exposed to classical music when he was young, and has no formal musical or production training. Perlowin’s second album, West Side Story, shows his growth not as a player, since he had already mastered the instrument, but as a producer, arranger, and recording engineer.

However, it is with this third album that his mastery of the recording studio blossomed to match his talents as a virtuoso musician. On Spanish Steel, Dave Beyer played drums and percussion, while Bill Watkins contributed timpani samples to complement Perlowin on pedal and lap steel guitars, electric and acoustic guitars, fretted and fretless basses, sitar, mandolin, mandocello, 5-string banjo, autoharp and additional percussion.

Spanish Steel is a totally unique and original album fulfilling Perlowin’s goal of showing the beauty and expressiveness of the pedal steel guitar. Replete with fascinating liner notes, it is the best example to date of the depths of Perlowin’s enormous talent. Find it along with his other albums at CDBaby.com, SteelGuitarMusic.com, Amazon.com; for reviews and images visit his artist website at http://www.mikeperlowin.com

Tropical Christmas

I can recall from my days in England, watching television at Christmas and seeing how others celebrated across the world. At one time I used to think about people in Australia, who seemed to be featured on the news every Christmas Day: its not like Christmas, hot weather and going to the beach.

Why I used to think like that I really do not know. I did not like the cold once I got past the age of about 30. Or was it 35 Who cares, I hate the cold now. Thats one of the many reasons I live in what many call paradise Palawan, in the south west of the Philippines.

Being a predominantly Christian country, Christmas is a big occasion in the Philippines. It is also still a religious occasion, which of course it should be. Only a tiny percentage of people can afford gifts, so the emphasis is on family holidays, time together, and for many going to church. Very few families have anything special for Christmas lunch, they just dont have the money. They do make up for it, though, as Filipinos certainly know how to enjoy themselves.

Despite the lack of money in most families, Christmas starts early in the stores, around August. One thing they go in for in a big way here is Christmas lights. Sometimes even the poorest homes will be adorned with fairy lights, some having quite spectacular displays. Even in early November last year, as I travelled back from the jungles edge about 90km south, it was quite magical to see the Christmas lights as we got near the city.

My first Christmas in the country was memorable. I was invited to a girlfriends house Christmas Eve, a very poor but very friendly neighbourhood with mostly small timber houses cramped next to each other intimate to say the least. Outside in the garden a tiny yard there were lights everywhere, set up for the party that would last all evening and into the night. I remember sitting there as they got everything organised around me, how magical and special it all was. Just a few months earlier I had been a resident in England and had only experienced Christmas in England. Now, I was sitting outside on a hot Christmas Eve, the sound of tropical insects a prelude to the modern disco music that was to follow later. I loved it.

As with most occasions in the Philippines, there were lots of children. Neighbours came and went, people moved from one party to another, and there was a constant flow of people and especially children. Childrens games were followed later by adult versions of childrens games, most of which have come from Western influence, but Filipinos always put their own stamp on the foreign habits they adopt. Alcohol would not have been a part of the occasion, but the adults were delighted when I offered to buy beer and rum.

At midnight, I was advised to go inside. I soon saw why. All hell broke loose with fireworks as midnight approached, exploding from every tightly packed, confined little garden in the neighbourhood. Fireworks that would have been banned in the UK, but I have to admit they were very loud and impressive. I was amazed, as nobody had warned me of this tradition beforehand.

Now, all my Christmases are tropical, and very different from those in England. I sometimes wonder how much Christmas would change here if it ever became a wealthy country. The major differences between here and England are the profligate spending and materialism in England, and the normal subdued spending in the Philippines. Yet, it is the Filipinos who seem more able to enjoy it that the English.

You're dashing with your kids, from store to store, madly trying to finish your Christmas shopping. You know that it's only a matter of time before the clock runs out on your children's patience, and they start to crash. They're tired of the Christmas CD you've been playing in the car, and the games you've brought along have run their course. You've got three more malls to hit today, and your biggest fear is trying to shop with bored children.

Here's one way to keep them entertained-dazzle them with your knowledge of odd little Christmas facts.

For instance: When you hear the Gene Autry classic "Here Comes Santa Claus"- for the fiftieth time, today-ask your kids if they'd like to visit the real Santa Claus Lane someday. That'll make them think, at least for a minute. Though they may be disappointed at the lack of snow and ice, if they do visit Santa Claus Lane. See, every year since the 1930's, Hollywood Boulevard has been officially re-named Santa Claus Lane, during Hollywood's annual Christmas parade.

More semi-useless, but attention-grabbing facts:

What's the most popular Christmas song of all time? Bing Crosby's version of "White Christmas". And "Silent Night"-arguably the most recognizable Christmas hymn-was written in 1818, by an Austrian pastor, Joseph Mohr. As Christmas Eve came, that year, the organ in his church was broken, so together with his friend, Franz Gruber, he wrote this new tune for the service that night, and played it on his guitar for his congregation. And "Jingle Bells" was originally written for a Thanksgiving celebration, in 1857.

As important as Christmas is to us, today, it's only been in the past 150 years or so that the day has been an official holiday, in America. Thanksgiving was a much more important secular holiday to early Americans. In fact, Alabama was the first state in America to recognize Christmas as a holiday, officially, in 1836-and it wasn't until 1905 that Christmas became officially recognized by Oklahoma.

Electric lights for Christmas trees were first invented by The Edison Company in 1882. Up until then, if trees were lit, candles were used-and then, usually only on Christmas Eve night.

The Christmas abbreviation-Xmas-is thought by some to be sacreligious, but in fact the first letter of the Greek word for Christ is chi, which is X. Before the invention of the printing press, "Xmas" was often used, in print, to save time and ink.

We get our custom of hanging stockings by the mantle from the Dutch, though their custom is to leave wooden shoes by the fireplace-they fill the shoes with fruits for the donkey St. Nicholas uses to carry his gifts for children.

See how easy it is? Just keep tossing out these little tidbits, one by one. Either your kids will marvel at your brilliance, or they'll fall asleep in the car. Either way, they're occupied. And you're almost done; Christmas is almost here. Just keep talking.

A deliriously drunk couple bursts through the double doors of Tosca Cafe on the eve of Prohibition. People are dancing the Charleston, plucking drinks from the trays of passing waiters. Fender Aerodyne Presicion Bass or the Fender 70's Jazz Bass?

Hi, i've been playing bass guitar for a year and a half now, and I've been looking into buying a new bass. I got my eyes set on the Fender '70s Jazz Bass and the Fender Aerodyne Classic Precision Bass. Styles of music that i do play are Metal, Alternative, Rock, Progressive, and Funk. Please make a suggestion bas(s)ed on which would better suit me and is the better quality bass.

I've been a bass player for about 35 years and I've always used a Fender Precision. I've tried Fender Jazz basses but I've found them to be too heavy, a little unbalanced on stage and the neck too skinny at the top.

For your styles of music, I'd pick the Precision. Why? Because you can hammer nails with it all day and it will play (and sound) beautifully at night.

Just my opinion
