Rocket Japanese Reviews: Learn Japanese Online Properly

Rocketlanguages.com provides people from all over the world 6-day language courses that tackle the basics and the advanced levels of language learning.  Depending on the language you are interested in, this website gives you the choice and the materials to practice, learn, and master some of the most popular and in-demand languages of today’s globalized world.  For example, if you are planning on visiting Japan for a vacation trip, you can learn Japanese online to make the experience worthwhile.  If you are an avid fan of artists and anime creators in Japan, you can learn the language by visiting Rocket Japanese in the subpages of the website.

Rocket Japanese is especially popular among people today, putting emphasis on those who constantly watch Japanese shows and listen to Japanese pop music, because the students would like to master the language and not have to keep searching for translations or reading the subtitles while watching.  The product consists of seven components, each one tackling every aspect of learning the Japanese language: reading comprehension, writing, and speaking conversational Japanese.  You begin with the basics, mastering basic conversational phrases and sentences, until such time that you are confident enough to speak the language in person.  You will then move on to the next components until the course is finished and until you are confident enough to speak certain phrases out loud to other people.

Though there are many other Japanese-learning programs on the internet, Rocket Japanese has proven to be one of the best and most effective in the market.  This can be seen through the customer testimonials, comments and reviews written by previous students of the program, and even the entire curriculum of the course located in the website.  You’re not only learning how to speak conversational Japanese but also are learning how to read and understand the language as well.  It may not be as effective as practicing and learning with an actual Japanese instructor, but it definitely beats having to watch so many anime shows or listen to Japanese songs over and over again just to learn in an unstable way.

Music in Anime

Music is essential to every anime and goes since its first seconds. Almost always after an anime release (series, OVA or movies) its soundtrack goes on sale. For very popular productions especially of several seasons, disks will be released for fans. No wonder as a whole, since apart from its basic objective anime OSTs also have a financial function - series are mostly financed by producers of such accessories as audio and video disks, toys. So series soundtrack sales support further series.

Disks contain compositions, songs and sometimes some character dialogs. Of course, most such disk songs are opening also predefining the series' commercial success. Opening and ending themes are performed by specially invited musicians or vocal actors seyu recording soundtracks. Sometimes producers can cast a beginning actor for a series part only to let him/her perform a song there and become famous so. Ending themes are less prestigious than introductory ones but still granted to few.

Many top bands agree to record anime songs. In 1999 The Pillows recorded 2 popular tracks for FLCL - Ride On Shooting Star and I Think I Can. In 2001 it was released in the US boosting its popularity in North America.

The Super Dimension Fortress Macross series known in America as Robotech in fact gave rise to the seyu industry in the early 1980s due to featuring Iijima Mari, a young actress and singer in the key female role of Lynn Minmay. These series songs performed by her were top-rated in Japanese hit parades and for the first time in anime history aroused great viewer interest to this profession.

Unlike feature movies with popular songs sometimes used to create a mood or contemporary atmosphere, animes usually have specially composed songs (mainly opening and ending themes). As an exception, The Story of Young Hanada (2002) series featured Backstreet Boys band songs as opening and ending themes.

The Bubblegum Crisis (2002) cyber punk series directed by Akiyama Katsuhito became the 1st with a soundtrack so popular the key actresses organized a band, Knight Sabers to perform a number of very successful concerts. Then this became common practice though such bands exist only during series production and release. Another popular band is DoCo with actresses who recorded a soundtrack for Ranma 1/2 TV series.

There're lots of websites about anime music for its boosting fan base. Many post polls to choose the best soundtrack. Thus BeStuff.com's poll attracted about 2K visitors who chose 5 best anime soundtracks of 2008. They included:

  1. Death Note (Film, TV)
  2. Naruto (Film, TV)
  3. Fullmetal Alchemist (TV)
  4. Cowboy Bebop (TV)
  5. Howl's Moving Castle (Film)

As seen, greatest popularity is enjoyed by music from series rather than full-length movies. Notably, Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack has long been considered one of the best. It consists of a large collection of jazz compositions mixed with folk, rock and pop music. The series itself is named after Be Bop, a music style.

A top seyu and J-pop performer is Megumi Hayashibara. She has voiced tens of characters and numerous songs within the DoCo and Ties bands. Her popular roles include:

  • Ayanami Rei (Evangelion)
  • Lina Inverse (Slayers)
  • Hello Kitty
  • Ranma-chan (Ranma 1/2)
  • Catgirl Nuku Nuku
  • Lime (Saber Marionette J)
  • Tira Misu (Bakeretsu Hunters)
  • Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop)
  • Haruka (Love Hina).

Though most tracks on such disks are performed in Japanese (except adapted versions for the English market), there're some animes with prevailing English compositions. An example is City Hunter's soundtrack with mostly English themes by Japanese bands and singers.

As mentioned, most anime OSTs are performed by seyus. However, Japanese music showbiz and seyu industry seem to have started merging. So some seyus set up their own music careers and beginning pop performers try to play a part in a popular anime series to sing a song there thus promoting their 1st album.

Moreover, pop music and animation are financed by the same corporations with the top ones being Sony and Pioneer.

One of a handful of films which epitomizes the 1980s decade, Ferris Bueller's Day Off captured the imagination of high school kids all across America as they dreamt of mimicking the title character's ability to manipulate the authority figures in his life. Written and directed by John Hughes, the brains behind The Breakfast Club (1985) and numerous other 1980's cult classics, Ferris Bueller's Day Off launched Matthew Broderick's acting career into another dimension. In fact, Broderick garnered a Golden Globe nomination for his outstanding performance. It's a nomination more than worthy of mention, because it's the strength of the Ferris Bueller character that made this film such a smash hit.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off follows a day in the life of high school senior Ferris Bueller. Nearing graduation, he's intent on living his life to the fullest (although preferably outside the confines of school). So Ferris takes a planned day of vacation with his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara), and after a little coaxing, his best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) joins them. Against Cameron's better judgment, the three drive his father's prized Ferrari into the windy city of Chicago for a day of fine dining, baseball, museums, and spontaneous fun. Meanwhile, Ferris may have successfully fooled his parents into believing he's deathly ill, but high school principal Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) and Ferris's jealous sister Jeanie (Jennifer Grey) are not so easy. Intent on shattering his golden boy image, each one is hot on his trail, anxious to expose his web of deceit once and for all.

With a number of hilarious scenes, such as Cameron's feeble attempt to reverse the mileage on his father's Ferrari, the film earns its reputation as an elite classic of the 80's, on par with hits like Back To The Future (1985), The Breakfast Club (1985), and Weird Science (1985). The film does have its off-the-wall moments, such as when Ferris takes over a parade and starts singing while thousands of spectators engage in synchronized dancing. You wouldn't see such a sequence in a contemporary film, and like similar scenes from The Blues Brothers, it tends to date the film. But the strength of Ferris Bueller's Day Off is not its timeless humor, but the likeability of Ferris Bueller himself. Ferris is a cool guy. He doesn't put anyone down, but only looks for the best in people. More importantly, he manipulates his parents into thinking he's the perfect embodiment of innocence while he skips school and goes joyriding! Every child of the 80's wanted to be Ferris Bueller, and the wide appeal of his life philosophy is timeless, which is why the film continues to enjoy success with each new generation.

Further solidifying the movie's status as a landmark of its decade is the soundtrack, which is certainly one of the more diverse and interesting of its time. Where else can you find The Beatles, Wayne Newton, the theme to Star Wars, and the 80's classic 'Oh Yeah' by Yello all wrapped up into one movie which moves seamlessly from one scene to the next? Throw in a few future Hollywood stars in Kristy Swanson, Ben Stein, and Charlie Sheen (who stayed awake for over two days so he could achieve the desired drugged out expression for his character), and Ferris Bueller's Day Off transforms into the quintessential cult classic. Even after two decades, this film is just as entertaining as when it first premiered.

One of the most important aspects of living a healthy and

prosperous life is understanding "risk." By this I mean knowing

how to understand and analyze situations in life that affect

health. Being able to accurately weigh benefits and risks when

making health decisions is very important! Too often decisions

are based on incomplete or inaccurate information and this is a

huge mistake with significant consequences!

Failure to accurately assess risk keeps people locked in all

kinds of unhealthy situations including poor eating and exercise

habits (lifestyle), relationships and jobs. Sometimes people are

just afraid to step out and make a change. They see "risk" in

making a change when the REAL risk comes from NOT making a

change. From my perspective, living with the stress, unhappiness

and frustration of indecision and poor health is the greatest

risk of all, and one that is definitely not worth taking!

Accessing "risk" is nothing more than collecting information,

weighing the alternatives and then making appropriate decisions

based on the information.

Some risks to our health are more "real" than others. For

example, it is common knowledge that obesity is associated with a

wide variety of health problems. On the other hand, there are

some health risks that are so remote we rarely think about them.

On a practical level, eating highly processed foods and avoiding

a daily dose of fresh fruits and vegetables is rarely considered

serious. But, as too many have already discovered, the long range

consequences of this practice are real and devastating.

Failure to accurately assess risk limits us in many ways. We

imagine the "risk" of talking with our children about drugs,

dating or sex and we put off having the "talk," even though the

risks of NOT talking are infinitely greater. Fear of flying and

public speaking are two more "risks" affecting millions of

people. But practically speaking, these fears are unfounded.

People ride in cars every day, even though cars are far more

dangerous than commercial aircraft! It's a failure to accurately

assess risk, and it limits our health, prosperity and pleasure in

life.

The goods news is that failure to accurately access risk is

reversible! The effects of those decisions to eat inappropriately

or NOT to exercise are, as the common expression goes,

"do-overs." We can effect positive change in our lives by

following a few simple steps to accurately access risk:

1. Accurately define your present situation and access your

health "risks". Are you eating a healthy diet? Are you getting

enough exercise and good quality sleep? What are the consequences

if you DON'T change? Weigh the benefits of healthier living vs

the potential risks such as increased cost, inconvenience or

discomfort.

2. What do you stand to gain if you change your present

circumstances? Assess the "up-side" potential. Too often we look

only at the "downside" risk and forget the benefits. What good

things might happen if you take the risk and win?

3. Limit the "down-side" if you happen to make a wrong decision.

Don't continue down a path if it does not produce results. This

is especially important when following weight loss programs. If

the pounds are not coming off or if the weight loss is only

temporary, find a new program! You not only want to lose weight,

but want to sustain the weight loss for as long as possible. Take

steps to ensure this will happen. Clear, concise, realistic

objectives will definitely help.

4. Reduce your risk by being smart! Understand the situation and

seek the advice of experts in the field of health and nutrition.

This includes finding and forming partnerships to receive support

and get good advice.

5. Have a fall-back position. If the decision you make fails to

produce the desired results, be prepared to take a long, hard

look at the circumstances and be prepared to change what you are

doing.

Everything in life involves some element of risk. Driving your

car, meeting someone new, crossing the street...but we do them

every day. Winners in life are willing to accept the risk and

continue on their way! Get involved, be smart about how you play

the game, come prepared for a few failures along the way, but

don't quite. You will reap the benefits for your effort and live

a happier and healthier life. I like to remember the words of the

great Winston Churchill when he said, "Never, never, never give

up!"

The Supremes were an all female group from the 1960s that was signed to Motown Records. The group was formed in the year 1959 as The Primettes in the city of Detroit by Milton Jenkins, who was managing an all male group known as The Primes. The initial members of the group were Diana Ross, Betty McGlown, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. These girls had grown up in the projects of Detroit and formed the group as a female version of The Primes that included Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams. These two later formed The Temptations.

Initially, The Supremes did not perform their own songs, but those by other renowned artists such as The Drifters and Ray Charles. They performed at social clubs, talent shows and sock hops in Detroit, and many of their 'live' gigs were mimed, as was the normal practice during this period when backing groups were not only not freely available, but also the expense was not considered worthwhile when songs could be mimed. It was a period when fans paid to SEE their stars, not listen to them singing live.

During this period, none of the girls was a designated lead singer, each taking on the role depending on the song. Shortly after the group was formed, they had a guitarist on board, Marvin Tarplin. With the guitarist, they could sing live instead of miming and this distinguished them from many of the other aspiring groups in Detroit.

The girls entered a local talent competition and won. With this under their belt, they decided to make a record and sign on with Motown. Diana managed to convince a neighbor, Smokey Robinson, to get them an audition with a Motown executive. They auditioned for Berry Gordy Jr. (father of Diana Ross's eldest daughter Rhonda) who refused to sign them because they were too young. Not to be deterred, they approached Lupine Records and got their first single out entitled "Tears of Sorrow", which was followed by their second one "Pretty Baby." None of these were hits.

During this time, McGlown was engaged to be married and decided to drop out of the group. Barbara Martin quickly took her place. The Primettes convinced Gordy to allow them to perform as background singers and he did. They performed for Mary Wells and Marvin Gaye among others. Finally, Gordy relented and signed them up as The Supremes in 1961. In 1962 Barbara left the group and went home to start a family living the remaining three Supremes to carry on.

In their first two years, The Supremes had no hits so they sang backup for The Temptations as well as Marvin Gaye. In the latter part of 1963, Gordy selected Diana as The Supremes lead singer. Their lucky break came with "lovelight" coming in at #23 in December of 1963. In 1964, they recorded "Where Did Our Love Go", which became their first number one single in America in August of that year. It was also their first song to be put on British pop charts, reaching number 3. This song opened up the flood gates of number one singles in the US by The Supremes.

The singles included "Come See about Me", "Back in My Arms Again", "Stop! In the Name of Love," and "Baby Love," this was simultaneously number one in the UK. It was also nominated for a Grammy in 1965 in the category of Best Rhythm and Blues Recording. Another hit "You Keep Me Hangin' On" received a Grammy in 1966 for the Best Pop Single. Among the number one hits were "I Hear a Symphony" and "You Can't Hurry Love." In the year 1966 they released their first album "The Supremes A' Go-Go."

They had become stars, featuring in movies and producing soundtracks for them. They began touring internationally and endorsing many products. The Supremes broke racial boundaries and were appealing to both black and white audiences. They were among the first musical groups to break such boundaries performing in supper clubs including the New York club Copacabana.

Their songs mixed rock & roll with R&B, making it difficult for others to copy their style. They also began appearing on TV shows regularly including The Ed Sullivan Show, on which they appeared 17 times, The Hollywood Palace, Hullabaloo and The Della Reese Show. It was on the back of The Supremes that groups like The Jackson 5 and The Four Tops found their own success.

As is the way of most famous groups, success brought internal wrangles. The group later became Diana Ross and the Supremes in 1967. Additional changes included replacing Florence Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Diana left The Supremes in 1970 to pursue a solo career, and was replaced by Jean Terrell and The Supremes carried on.

Many young ladies joined and left the Supremes including Scherrie Payne, Susaye Green, and Lynda Laurence who joined the group in the mid 70s. In 1977 the 18 year reign of The Supremes came to an end. 12 of their singles had been number one on the charts. Of all the groups signed by Motown, they were the most successful, rivaling The Beatles in popularity around the world.

In a truly peaceful setting, War takes center stage
So beautiful, that area of the Niagara Gorge where Artpark sits. Going there feels like visiting the cradle of something powerful. Hearing music there, on a night like Tuesday, can trick you into believing you're in paradise. You aren't, actually. But “pretty close” is often good enough. And on Tuesday, as '70s funk collective War kicked off Artpark's Tuesdays in the Park series for the summer ...

Any neat music to work out with?

I do treadmill cardio for an hour and a half a day. I prefer music with a serious beat to keep me motivated. I think I've covered the basics. Current Top 40, Queen, Grease, Footloose, Dirty Dancing, Top Gun, 60s R&B, and light 80's. I'll list more later.
Can I get specific titles with Singer/Band. Thanks!

Cover Bands And Why We Love Them

A cover band is a music group that performs songs originally produced by other famous bands. Sometimes, they dress like the original band, take on their persona, and rock out like the classics. Some of them name their group as a spoof to the original and come up with creative names like Odyssey instead of Journey. Cover bands are different than a band covering a song from an original artist. Cover bands strictly perform the band they are trying to emulate. Some bands that are trying to make their way into the music industry will do a cover of a song from a more famous band, but rerecord it to make it sound like their own.

Some cover bands choose the tops songs from a certain decade to perform. Rotel and the Hot Tomatoes is a cover band the goes through three decades during their performance and have costume changes for each decade. They play the top hits from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Another successful cover band that performs hits from a certain time era is the Three Dog Night band. They cover a variety of songs from the 60s and 70s. A fun place to go in Austin, TX is the Cedar Street courtyard where you can see the band called the Spazmatics perform 80s hits.

While some cover bands focus on a particular decade or decades, other bands that do covers focus on a single group. They are often called tribute cover bands. A popular tribute band that covers all the greatest hits from the original band called ABBA is called Gabba. A tribute band that performs only Beatle’s hits is called the Egg Men, and they got their name from one of the Beatle’s songs. Tribute bands are so fun for people who had loved the original band back when they were in their prime. Some bands don’t tour anymore, so fans will watch tribute bands to hear their favorite music live.

Besides covering bands from a certain decade or specific band, some groups will perform a cover and change the genre of the original song. For example, Trans Siberian Orchestra performs traditional classical style Christmas songs and turns them into rock songs. Some jazz artists will take a famous rock song and play it on an instrument like a saxophone or a piano to change the genre of it.

On a different scale, there are also a lot of impersonators that act exactly like an iconic star. You have probably seen these folks in Las Vegas or Hollywood. Perhaps the most famous person to be impersonated is Elvis Presley. Other iconic stars are also impersonated like Cher or Madonna. Some impersonators just walk around the street acting like the original star, and others perform shows and concerts.

Times change, song remains the same
The Village of today is a place of chain stores, condos and apartments with sky-high rents. This was once the place where — as documented in Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up in Blue” — there was “music in the cafes at night and revolution in the air.”
