The majority of Puerto Plata's all-inclusive resorts will offer at least a small boutique or two, along with several nightspots ranging from small bars to exhilarating dance clubs. While some guests may be happy to stay within the resort and take advantage of the excellent amenities, it really is worth getting out, mixing with the locals, and exploring all that Puerto Plata has to offer.

The area consists of three main resort towns, Puerto Plata, nearby Sousa, and the popular Cabarete Beach. Luckily each destination is within close proximity of the other allowing for numerous shopping and nightlife choices. The best shopping variety can be found in Puerto Plata, where, in addition to many unique boutiques and souvenir stores, shoppers can find larger mall style complexes with a great variety of stores. Plaza Turisol Complex is the largest shopping center on the north coast and boasts more than 80 outlets. Some of the island's most upscale clothing stores can be found at the complex along with a wide variety of gift and tasteful souvenir shops. Plaza Turisol Complex is centrally located about five minutes east of the city and is a great place to start when shopping for the perfect item.

Another popular complex is the nearby Centro Commercial Playa Dorada, featuring authentic Dominican handicrafts, collectibles, gifts and clothing. The Amber Shop is also located here and is partnered with the famed Amber Museum. The shop offers visitors the chance to take home some of the Dominican Republic's semiprecious stones. Various items including necklaces, bracelets and pendants feature the beautiful stones, and the array of colors will give you an excuse to buy several items to complement your wardrobe!

Another Puerto Plata favorite for jewelry is Harrison's, located in the Plaza Isabela near the entrance to the Playa Dorada Hotel Complex. If you want something striking and exotic to show off when you return from the Dominican Republic, stop by Harrison's Jewelers to purchase a unique souvenir. Harrison's is world famous for its selection and celebrity clients. In addition to Harrison's, Plaza Isabela features a collection of small specialty shops offering a wonderful selection of unique items, gifts, clothing and souvenirs.

If you still have some energy at the end of a day of shopping, Puerto Plata and the surrounding area also offer a vibrant, exciting nightlife. When the sun goes down it's time to get out, have some fun and make some new friends.

Several spots are located on El Maceon, Puerto Plata's ocean-side promenade that encompasses Fort San Felipe. La Barrica attracts visitors who are looking for a more authentic Dominican experience than that which can be found in the more westernized bars. This bohemian nightspot comes alive after 11pm with plenty of Latin and Caribbean-inspired music, with the atmosphere being as conducive to all-out partying as you can get in the Dominican Republic! Nearby Café Cito, however, offers a more relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy chatting to the locals over drinks and great food. This friendly hang-out has been rated among the two top spots for a night out in Puerto Plata by the Lonely Planet Guide and the Rough Guide, and features great live music including jazz, blues and vintage rock and roll. In addition, Café Cito is Puerto Plata's only 'try before you buy' cigar bar, where you can sample various cigars and then buy by the box at factory prices.

Another good spot for nightlife is within the Playa Dorada Shopping Center in Puerto Plata. Hemingways is a local favorite and its rustic character stands in stark contrast to the manicured exterior of the shopping center that contains it, with the décor being more reminiciscent of Old Key West. After 9 pm, Hemingway's rocks with karaoke, live music, and merengue dancing, so be sure to bring your dancing shoes! Call ahead to see what's on the music menu, or just come down to watch your favorite sporting event on satellite television. Close by, The Crazy Moon Disco is located in the lobby of the Paradise Beach Hotel within the shopping center, and draws a crowd of both young and old, tourist and locals. Show off your dance moves in the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd, with super-charged Latin, dance and hip-hop music. There are two bars, a decent sized dance floor, and plenty of lounge seating. Crazy Moon knows how to party, so be prepared to dance the night away!

From pristine beaches and all-inclusive resorts to fantastic shopping and exciting evenings out, Puerto Plata has it all. Night or day, Puerto Plata offers some of the Dominican Republic's finest dining, shopping and nightlife. Discover for yourself what makes this intriguing and diverse destination so special.

Learn The Types Of Ballroom Dancing

So you want to learn ballroom dancing. You know that being a good professional dancer, you can earn a good income and may even one day become a celebrity.

Dancing well can have many other benefits too. Do you know that dancing can give you good poise and lends you an air of elegance? Dancing can even correct your bad posture and make you look taller, strengthens your cardiovascular health, tone your muscles, improve your flexibility and yes, even losing weight! If your lover is your dance partner, you can even strengthen your bonding and love.

There are many dance styles you can choose to learn, however, the most elegant type of dancing is ballroom dancing. Ballroom dancing has many genre and these include the cha cha, the jive, rhumba, foxtrot, samba, waltz, tango and salsa just to name a few.

There are many ballroom dancing forms and I will briefly describe some of the more popular ones here.

Ballroom dancing is considered a formal and elegant form of social dancing. The word "ball" is derived from the Latin word "ballare" which simply means dance. Ballroom dancing is usually performed by a couple where usually the male dancer leads and the female dancer follows the steps.

There are two main styles of ballroom dancing which are the international style and the American style. The Rumba, Mambo, Cha Cha, Waltz, Foxtrot and Salsa dances are some of the most popular types of ballroom dancing enjoyed being enjoyed all over the world..

Salsa is a dance for Salsa music created by the Spanish speaking people from the Caribbean. Salsa dancing is a fine elegant mixture of African and European dance influences through the music and dance fusions that are the roots of Salsa. Salsa dancing is closely related to "dirty dancing".

Salsa is usually a couple partner dance although there are also solo forms, line dancing (suelta), and Rueda de Casino where groups of couples exchange partners in a circle. The Salsa dance can also be improvised or performed with a set routine.

The Rumba style of ballroom dancing is sometimes known as the Latin Waltz. The American Rumba is a variation of a slow rhythmed Cuban dance called the "Son" that was brought to the United States in the 1920s. The Rumba is danced on the spot, rather than all over the dance floor, with hip and other body movements in a slow, quick, quick beat.

The Modern Waltz style of ballroom dancing comes from the Austria Waltzen styles of ballroom dancing popular in Austria and Germany in the early 1900s. The Boston Waltz became popular in the United States in 1834 and is a slower version of the Viennese Waltz. Today, the Waltz still remains as a slow type of ballroom dancing and the slower tempo has allowed the Waltz to have more figures, dips and steps added to it.

The Foxtrot is a form of ballroom dancing chereographed by Harry Fox in 1914 in New York City. The Foxtrot involves moving the back leg in a smooth action, although there are many versionss of the Foxtrot. The original Foxtrot was faster and not as smooth and stylish as some of the variations danced today. However, the faster Foxtrot style of ballroom dancing is still taught in many modern ballroom dancing studios and danced in many modern ballrooms.

The Cha Cha was originally called the Cha Cha Cha because its main tempo movement is based on a triple step. The Cha Cha style of ballroom dancing originated in the Cuban Mambo and became popular in the United States in the 1950s. The Cha Cha triple step is danced in between two rock beat movements. This dance form is perhaps the most popular ballroom dance style in the world.

The early tango was known as tango criollo. Today, there are many tango dance styles, including Argentine Tango, Uruguayan Tango, Ballroom tango, American and International tango styles, Finnish tango and vintage tangos. What many tango dancers consider to be the authentic tango is that closest to that originally danced in Argentina and Uruguay athough other forms of tango have developed into more mature dances in their own right.

The Jive is a dance style in 4/4 tempo that was originated in the United States from African-Americans in the early 1940s. It is a lively and uninhibited variation of the Jitterbug, a form of Swing dance.

Jive is one of the five International Latin dances. In competition it is danced at a speed of 44 bars per minute, although in other cases this is reduced to between 32 and 40 bars per minute. Many of the jive's basic patterns are similar to these of the East Coast Swing with the major difference of highly syncopated rhythm of the Triple Steps (Chasses), which use straight eighths in ECS and hard swing in Jive. That is why the jive is closely related to lindy hop and jitterbug ballroom dance form.

If you want to learn any type of ballroom dancing, it is never too late to start with the ballroom dancing basics. You may think the dance steps are very complex, but they are actually easy. So if you are interested, you can actually learn it at home.

It is truly a wonderful sight to see couples take the stage and sway their bodies to a good ballroom music. Not only is dancing a fun activity for you but it is also a form of expression as well as a very good exercise and a way to interact with people. It is also a way to build self-confidence from the way you look on the dance floor, which can be used in other aspects of your life. If you are interested in learning how to dance, it is here are some ballroom dancing basics to take note.

Learning the terms

Whether you are into ballet or ballroom, you need to first start with familiarizing the dance, and good way to know is learning the terminologies and names of the steps. Although the dance does not require a special footwear like that of ballet, it will also help if you get a sturdy pair of shoes for your dancing to avoid injuries. Ballroom dances can be done in many styles but you can always take the simplest and most basic styles first before going to the more complex ones.

Posture

Maintaining a good posture is one of the most important things you should learn and master before you go into learning the basic dance steps. If you will notice, the good posture in ballroom dancing makes the dance fabulous and pleasing to the eyes. Having a good posture will also project self-confidence while you are dancing.

Dance hold

One important thing to learn in ballroom dances is moving and dancing with a partner. One of the ballroom dancing basics you need to learn is the basic dance hold. This is also important to master as the gracefulness and balance of your dance depend largely on doing the correct dance hold. To learn the details of the correct dance hold, video tutorials will help you learn it the correct way - from proper feet position to head and body position. Find a dance partner and practice and master this before starting any dance steps. It is also important to learn how to hold your partner during turns, which is an essential part in this type of dancing.

Timing

Since ballroom dancing is a dance for pairs, proper timing is also important. Women should not precede the man's leading when dancing. In learning the steps, learn to listen to ballroom music to get familiar with its beat and rhythm.

Footwork

Triple step, rock step, ball change, kick ball change - you will master ballroom dancing if you learn how to execute these steps one by one. In learning these steps, make sure that you are not just keeping in mind its correct execution but also keep in mind good posture, timing and other ballroom dancing basics.

When you eventually learn the ballroom dancing basics, you can then find a partner and start dancing! You can also enroll in dance classes so you can enjoy learning the dance.

Carolyn Anderson has great love for ballroom dancing and enjoys it during her free time. For videos that will teach you how to dance like a pro, check out Louis Let's Dance. Also check out Ballet Bible, for a comprehensive package if you are interested in ballet dancing for you or for your kids.

Jazz as Dance

Jazz as Dance

Jazz as Dance

While few people understand the true origins of Jazz as a music form,Visit here now http://britainsgottalentvideos.blogspot.com

fewer people still understand the origins of jazz as a style of dance. Jazz is very much a fatherless child. More than that however, jazz as music and dance seem to have many mothers despite the fact that they have no father. By this I mean that there are many influences to this colorful form of music and dance though no one influence is notable enough in the new creation to be considered the 'father' or 'mother' for that matter of jazz.

Though jazz has many supposed birth places it really only has one true home and that home would be New Orleans. Much like the music this city is famous for, New Orleans is a city without a father too. New Orleans was a melting pot in the truest sense of the word before we had any real clue what it meant to be a melting pot. From the influences of the French, Spanish, German, English, and of course the population of former slaves and black free men and women, New Orleans was the perfect place for this blended and mixed style of music and dance to call home.

It is no wonder that jazz dance emerged as the result of jazz music. There are simply no adequate dance steps for the delightful music we have come to know over the years as jazz. For this reason something new and a little bit off the main path was needed in order to keep time and pace with the new music that was emerging.

As a style of dance, jazz was much more 'brazen' than dances in the past had been and in some circles considered to be singly unseemly. Polite society certainly had no interest in this particular form of dance. The good news for those who enjoyed this style of dance is that there were plenty of places in which jazz, as a form of dance and music, was readily embraced. You had to go off the beaten path a little in order to find it but for many it was well worth the effort.

Jazz music and dance was popular for quite a while and then seemed to go underground except in cities such as Memphis, New Orleans, Kansas City, and St. Louis where it was an ingrained part of the history and culture. We have seen a reemergence of this once popular style of music and dance in recent years however with some notable musicians bringing back the swing and 'big band' sound that went hand in hand with jazz as both a music form and a style of dance.

You should understand however, that when it comes to jazz dance, much like the music, there are no definitive rules that you must follow in order for it to be jazz. There are no rigid dance steps that must be adhered to for the 'jazz' effect. Jazz dance is often confused as 'tap dance' because tap music was often set to jazz music. It is important however to realize that jazz isn't limited to tap dance and that other styles of dance fall under the rather large umbrella of 'jazz dance'.

Some of the more common jazz dances include: Black Bottom, Boogie Woogie, the Cakewalk, the Charleston, the Jitterbug, the Lindy Hop, and swing dancing. Each of these styles of dance seems to be making a rather remarkable comeback in popularity over the course of the last two decades and are very interesting to watch, as well as in which to participate should you ever have the opportunity.

If you have considered jazz dance lessons for you or your children, I hope you will decide to indulge. Not only is the music for this type of dance excellent and uplifting but also the style of dance in and of itself is quite fun and enjoyable. There are very few styles of dance that can compete when it comes to allowing artistic license, going with the flow, and simply dancing for the sheer joy of dancing. As an art form and as a form of entertainment jazz music and dance are tops in my book.Visit here now http://britainsgottalentvideos.blogspot.com

Learning to hear the different beats in music is like learning a new language. When you first start to learn a foreign language, it seems as if all the words run together into one long sentence. However, after you get familiar with the words, and get used to listening to the foreign language, each word becomes clear and easy to identify.

Music is a language; a very easy language to learn. It basically has four main words: One; Two; Three; Four.

One or First Beat, is the strongest sounding beat in each measure of music.

Two or Second Beat, is a light sounding beat following the strong First Beat.

Three or Third Beat, is a strong beat but not as strong as the First Beat.

Four or Fourth Beat, is the lightest beat in the measure or bar of music.

Waltz music is the exception to the rule with only three beats of music. The first beat is heavily accentuated and it is followed by two light beats. The rhythm is - heavy, light, light - heavy, light, light.

HEARING THE MUSIC AND CHOOSING THE DANCE

The first step in dancing to the music is to identify whether the style of the music has an American flavor, or a Latin flavor.

American Style songs, like Swings or Foxtrots (e.g. Frank Sinatra style), are easy to identify. The music has a heavy base drum sound on the First Beat that makes you want to tap your foot down.

A good exercise, while standing or sitting, is to practice tapping the foot on the First Beat and the Third beat of music - leave the heal on the floor and lift the front of the foot on the second and fourth beat. After getting comfortable hearing and tapping on the First and Third beats, start stepping on those beats instead of tapping.

Dances in the Latin Style tend to have a Latin flavor to all of them. However, they can have many rhythmic variations within the style.  Slow melodious Latin songs, like Rumba, are the easiest to dance and identify. Rather than a feeling of tapping with the foot the First beat on the Rumba makes you want to move.

American bands, playing Latin music, play easier to hear beats than Latin bands because they use drummers. Since most Latin Bands do not have drummers, many times you feel more like a "tempo" or a "pulse" - a wave that carries you, rather than hearing a clear beat (e.g. like feeling a pulse in someone's wrist). Some dances like Cha-Cha have a strong staccato feeling while others, like Samba, have more of a bouncy feeling.

The best exercise for Latin Music is to listen to a lot of Latin songs. Do not try to hear the beats, or dance to them. Just listen to the music and let your body respond to it when it wants to. After a while all four beats of the music will become very obvious.

Like any foreign language, learning to hear the beats in the music requires practice. Listen To Dance Music and let the music move you as you concentrate on other things. There will be two benefits to this practice; the beats will become very obvious to you, and you will develop a very strong sense of rhythm.

Happy listening,

Blanche & Emilio

Salsa Dancing Music
where is salsa music popular?

contries in which salsa dancing/music is popular

Salsa has penetrated the entire world. There are salsa groups from Africa, Japan, Sweden, Italy, Romania...pretty much everywhere. It is also danced around the world.

But the main countries where salsa is a part of everyday life and not just something for a specific subculture of dance of music are: Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia and Venezuela. The United States has a strong salsa culture in New York and Miami due to the large number of Puerto Rican and Cuban immigrants. The Dominican Republic is the home of merengue and bachata, although a very famous salsa singer, El Canario, comes from there.

Salsa music tends to have somewhat different characteristics and the dance styles differ as well. In the past 10 years dancers in the United Sates have done a very good job of marketing classes internationally so American style salsa dancing has been spreading around the world. the other main types are Cuban salsa and Colombian salsa.

Here is some salsa from the "real" salsa countries

Japanese salsa by Orquesta de la Luz

African salsa by Africando

Swedish salsa by Calle Real
The audio is a bit out of sync at the beginning of the song as sometimes happens at youtube.

There are salsa conventions held all over the world nowadays. there are really two main ways of dancing salsa: in a straight line back and forth like in the US and in a circular pattern like in Cuba.

US styles dancing, which is also done in Puerto Rico.
you can hear another sample of how New York style salsa music sounds as well.

Cuban style salsa dancing with Cuban salsa music in the background. Notice that they move in a circle the whole time whereas the US style moves basically "in a slot".

This video happens to be filmed in Paris where there is a lot of Cuba salsa. The couple also dances afro-cuban rumba in a couple of spots, you can see it when they split apart and dance side by side. that's basic afro-cuban rumba..

If you want to learn how to salsa dance like a salsa star, follow these tips:

1) Take your time. Learning how to salsa dance is not an overnight process so don't expect to grasp it right away. Although it's easy over time, give yourself time, be patient and practice, practice, practice!

2) Purchase some salsa music! By investing in at least on salsa album you're off to a good start.

Here are some recommendations for some excellent salsa CDs:

SALSA FRESCA - This is an excellent CD "for those who love to dance salsa, not just listen to it." This compilation CD will have you grooving salsa style all night long. Its inviting rhythmic beats are particularly good for those who love to Mambo. This CD is even a keeper for non-dancers. A must have for your CD collection!

TONY VEGA GREATEST HITS - Tony Vegas has charm and Latin gentleman appeal that can be heard in his music. His musical style appeals to everyone. It is smooth and romantic yet energetic and upbeat this is an unmatched collection of Tony Vega hits from 1989-1994. His songs are infused with romantic tones and sensuous Cuban Mambo and Puerto Rican Salsa style beats.

Rough Guide: Salsa Dance ~ various artists - A huge selection of musical compilations put out under the Rough Series. Rough Guide: Salsa Dance is one of the hotter Latin music themed albums to be released to date. Volume 2 is also an excellent CD. The music is so hot you'll be grabbing your dancing shoes the minute you press play.

Ultra Mix: The Best of Salsa - "Every salsa lover should have this in their collection." Some say its best suited for listening. Others are convinced it's one of the best compilation discs for dancing. But Salsa lovers who have bought it all agree its good music. Decide for yourself.

3) If you're not one to pick up beats easily, count out loud until you are able to synchronize the music and the dance steps become second nature.

4) Plan on taking at least two classes a week, with at least one practice session; if you want to learn (more is better).

5) Practice Good Hygiene! Make sure you're clean and ready to go. Breath mints, gum, deodorant and cologne are every salsa dancer's best friend. Believe me; your partner will love you for it!

6) Take Small Steps, and practice shifting your weight from one foot to the other, staying on the balls (front) of your feet.

No, I mean it - Smaller Steps - a good guide is steps no larger than the size of your own shoeprint!

7) Wear comfortable shoes and breathable clothing. Cotton fabrics are always a good choice.

8) HAVE FUN! We only get one shot at life, enjoy it!

Dancing And The Music Of Yesteryear

When I was young I wanted to become a dancer. I was put into dance lessons, and I hated it. It was not what I thought it would be like. I wanted to dance to have fun but not to primp around in skimpy outfits. As I was growing up they would have dance parties where the couple's mostly young kids would enter dance contests. These contests would last until the last couple would be left standing.

These dances would really get the kids going and for a while, these kids could really rock. But after a while this dance craze went out like smoke. The only time the kids get together now is at their school dances and then if you went, you would see that most of these young kids wouldn't even get out on the dance floor. Most of these kids don't even know how to dance. They don't even know the first steps or even have a clue that dancing can be fun. They didn't know that if the music is right and so is the mood, you can really start to enjoy yourself and the one you are with.

Do you remember the movie Dirty Dancing? Those dances and the music themselves could get anyone's heart to start to pump a little faster and make the people want to dance. To the joy of feeling like you were young again and the world was at your feet. When we were young and in school they would try to teach us dance steps. Of course it was girls dancing with girls, so it wasn't fun. This teaching in gym class didn't last too long, but some of us did learn some of the steps.

After my children were born and if it was a rainy day where no one could go outside, I would crank up our stereo and play the old songs that I listened to before they were born. I would have them stand on my feet like my dad would do with me, and we would dance around the living room for hours. We would do this at least twice a month and when my nieces came over to stay for a while, I would do this with them.

I tried to make the children really listen to the music and to let their bodies move with the sounds, if not the words. If you would really sit down and listen to the sound of the music and not the sounds or words of the songs, the music can make your soul rejoice. This is why the music of yesterday is so popular today.
