Pop music is often described in cycles: retro music becomes cool, then gets reprocessed and digested by listeners, until the next big thing comes along. While the 80's are (some would say thankfully) long behind us, the sounds from classic records from the era have likewise experienced a reincarnation. The second installment in this series aims to show how to most easily recreate a classic sound heard on many famous songs from the 80's through today: the unmistakable sound of analog brass.

While a sample-based approach is often most useful for some applications, there are times when you need that ambiance that can only be achieved through using traditional subtractive methods. Let's go step by step through the programming process.

First, let's establish default settings: Lowpass filter all the way open (100%), envelopes off, and whatever waveform is selected by default. By the way, these sounds should all be achievable on a modern softsynth or any piece of polyphonic hardware (although for a monosynth lead brass sound the same settings will apply.

As far as the oscillators are concerned, a rich waveform is best. Start with a sawtooth waveform, and if one (or more) oscillators is available, set them also to this waveform. It should sound nice and bright. For a two-plus oscillator synth, detuning each oscillator by a few cents (5-10 maximum) will make a bigger, denser sound. This is because the oscillators will now be beating against each other, which our ears interpret as adding harmonic content.

Remember to detune one oscillator up and the other down (or in a similar fashion for more oscillators) in order to make the mixed oscillators sound in tune!

Now for the filter. This is the most critical part of the classic 80's brass sounds, as the harmonic content tends to be an important aural "cue" for a listener that makes a sound more readily identifiable. Set the cutoff at about 50%, with a mild (10-20% maximum) amount of resonance. These parameters, and those which follow, are all subject to taste, of course.

Use the keyboard tracking parameter in moderation, as you only want the filter to open up some as you play higher up the keyboard. This is designed to emulate the characteristic muted sound as you play higher notes on many brass instruments. Other parameters related to the filter will be discussed below, so ignore any other filter modulation parameters (envelope, LFO, etc.) for now. If there is a highpass filter, pull it up in moderation to thin out the brass some. This is optional, but often makes a big patch sit better in a mix.

On to the envelopes. If you are using a two-envelope machine, so much the better, but really only one envelope is neccesary to achieve many of these sounds. As technology has progressed further, often times one is tempted to use more oscillators, more filters, effects, etc. to make synthesizer-based music.

However, working within the limitations offered by some of this now-ancient equipment can still result in very satisfying sounds, if a bit simple by modern standards. With this in mind, set your filter envelope to have the following parameters: medium attack (about 35-50%), a fairly quick decay (around 15-20%), sustain at half, and a moderate release (depending on your playing style and needs, adjust this to quicker values for a more percussive, horn stab-type sound). Play around with the attack and decay settings to optimize your envelopes (which vary in terms of speed) to get a sound with a quick swell in brightness, followed by a more muted sustaining sound.

Now, for LFO modulation(may also be called Vibrato), you may want to use a small amount of modulation on the oscillator pitch. If a delay parameter is available for the LFO, pull it back to about 50%, so as to smoothly transition from an initially in tune sound, to a progressively more quavery sound as you continue to hold notes down. This can add a bit of 80's cheese, so use it tastefully. Also, if a chorus is available, brass sounds can benefit greatly. Enjoy, and hopefully these instructions will put you on the right track to achieving some great 80's brass.

What would a wedding be without the singing or playing of some of the more popular wedding songs ever devised? Well, it would still be a wedding but it would be one that was sorely missing a popular element. Now, if you were asked to present a list of these top songs, would you be able to name all of them? If not there is no need to worry, the following is a list of some of the more popular songs that are frequently present when wedding bells chime:

The wedding should always start out with a song that themes the romantic nature of the event. This is where Tchaikovsky's "Waltz From Sleeping Beauty" is such an outstanding choice. The lyricism of this particular number significantly presents a tone that is bright and uplifting. And is that not what proper selections for a wedding song should embody?

Processional songs set the stage to the wedding and one of the best weddings songs to employ is the "Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet" as performed by Andy Williams. Actually, since this is an instrumental you could a number of recordings. While most may not be aware the theme derives from 1968's film adaptation of the play, most are familiar with its sound. And this is one of the most romantic themes ever crafted which makes it perfect for a wedding selection.

Rod Stewart's "Have I Told You Lately (That I Love You)" remains a perennial choice for the First Dance selection when the bride and groom take to the floor. Mostly everyone has heard of this song which is why it is among the most popular wedding songs commonly selected. It is also probably the most romantic song ever recorded which is certainly another plus associated with the song.

What would a Father/Daughter dance be without the playing of The Temptations "My Girl?" It would be a cliche to state that this song is an 'oldie but a goodie' but the cliché is most definitely true. "My Girl" has been a perennial father/daughter song because it is a tremendous recording that will bring sentimental tears to people's eyes and smiles to their faces.

Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life" is sometimes considered sappy and, to a certain extent, this is true. However, it also makes for a perfect Mother/Son dance tune. This is a classic love song that has been playing on easy listening stations for decades. It is also a common choice among those looking for an excellent Mother and Son dance number.

Sister Sledge's version of "We Are Family" is a great selection for the Bridal Party dance because it adds a great sense of fun to the proceedings. It is also a nice departure from the more serious love tunes commonly employed at a wedding. No, this is not to say love tunes are a weak choice as much as it is to point out that upbeat friendly songs have their place as well.

Since the cutting of the cake is an unforgettable moment, would it not be appropriate that it is accompanied by Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable?" Some may think the song is a little bit too serious but it really is not. It is a bright and cheerful song that will certainly prove memorable.

The garter toss remains one of the more fun moments of a wedding. Would it not be appropriate to select a fun song to accompany it along the lines of "Legs" by ZZ Top? This is quickly becoming one of the more popular wedding songs of a newer generation that was raised on music videos and pop culture. It is also a fun song that most people will find a nice inclusion to the festivities.

And even the glory of a festive event such as a wedding must come to an end. This, of course, necessitates a last dance and among the absolute best inclusions for a song would be "Always and Forever" by Heatwave. This is a tremendous selection to play as the guests exit the banquet hall and it sets the perfect sentiment for the marriage. That is, it infers the marriage will be one of eternal love which is clearly an excellent sentiment to put forth.

Of course, there are many other selections that are considered to be among the most popular wedding songs. The ones listed herein are certainly among those people find to be most memorable. Including them into a wedding would certainly be a positive decision.

Kerchoonz Scraps Artist Fee During Unsigned Competition

Kerchoonz.com - the much anticipated answer to the music industry's current downloading problem - is to scrap its artist sign-up fee for Christmas.

The groundbreaking new website, swamped by over 8 million hits and 80,000 unique visitors in November, is scrapping its £12.50 fee to mark the start of Kerchoonz Live - a month long competition to find the hardest working unsigned acts on the circuit.

Bands and artists have until the end of December to use Kerchoonz.com to promote themselves and earn money in a bid to bag a recording session at a famous Glasgow studio. As well as being able to record three tracks at the hands of top producer Ian Morrow (Wet Wet Wet, Rod Stewart, Seal), acts will get to keep all money earned from plays and downloads on Kerchoonz.com.

"I can imagine it's going to be huge and why not?" says former Stereophonics star Stuart Cable. "Becoming a professional musician in a band is the hardest job in the world - so to do it this way is great."

The social media platform lets registered artists and songwriters share their music and videos with fans while getting paid for every stream and download through a combination of the ISRC and play counts by utilizing unique coding and encryption within the application. Kerchoonz pays unsigned acts half a penny for every play and up to 10p for every download - by far the largest payments available to any act choosing to give away their music online.

Artists can even earn money by recommending other musicians to the site and, with no limit on the number of people you can recommend, it's the hardest working acts that will reap the greatest rewards.

"Kerchoonz.com takes the world of online music to a completely different dimension by allowing musicians to earn money from their work without being exploited" says Co-Founder, Indiana Gregg.

Kerchoonz.com is currently locked in talks with both independent and major record labels to bring further content to the site, providing a comprehensive music catalogue for fans.

"If bands and artists use the promotional tools we provide for them, Kerchoonz.com will act just like a record company. Artists can effectively ‘sell' their music without charging their fans anything for it," says Gregg.

Kerchoonz is a place where musicians, artists, film makers, fans, business people, and technologists can meet and exchange in a free and open environment. Our mission is to provide a social platform that enables all of us to explore and create, listen and be heard, give. receive, and discover. Kerchoonz was founded by musicians who believe that artists and musicians should be encouraged and also compensated for their work.

Cover Bands And Why We Love Them

A cover band is a music group that performs songs originally produced by other famous bands. Sometimes, they dress like the original band, take on their persona, and rock out like the classics. Some of them name their group as a spoof to the original and come up with creative names like Odyssey instead of Journey. Cover bands are different than a band covering a song from an original artist. Cover bands strictly perform the band they are trying to emulate. Some bands that are trying to make their way into the music industry will do a cover of a song from a more famous band, but rerecord it to make it sound like their own.

Some cover bands choose the tops songs from a certain decade to perform. Rotel and the Hot Tomatoes is a cover band the goes through three decades during their performance and have costume changes for each decade. They play the top hits from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Another successful cover band that performs hits from a certain time era is the Three Dog Night band. They cover a variety of songs from the 60s and 70s. A fun place to go in Austin, TX is the Cedar Street courtyard where you can see the band called the Spazmatics perform 80s hits.

While some cover bands focus on a particular decade or decades, other bands that do covers focus on a single group. They are often called tribute cover bands. A popular tribute band that covers all the greatest hits from the original band called ABBA is called Gabba. A tribute band that performs only Beatle’s hits is called the Egg Men, and they got their name from one of the Beatle’s songs. Tribute bands are so fun for people who had loved the original band back when they were in their prime. Some bands don’t tour anymore, so fans will watch tribute bands to hear their favorite music live.

Besides covering bands from a certain decade or specific band, some groups will perform a cover and change the genre of the original song. For example, Trans Siberian Orchestra performs traditional classical style Christmas songs and turns them into rock songs. Some jazz artists will take a famous rock song and play it on an instrument like a saxophone or a piano to change the genre of it.

On a different scale, there are also a lot of impersonators that act exactly like an iconic star. You have probably seen these folks in Las Vegas or Hollywood. Perhaps the most famous person to be impersonated is Elvis Presley. Other iconic stars are also impersonated like Cher or Madonna. Some impersonators just walk around the street acting like the original star, and others perform shows and concerts.

The Village of today is a place of chain stores, condos and apartments with sky-high rents. This was once the place where — as documented in Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up in Blue” — there was “music in the cafes at night and revolution in the air.”
